Today I’d like to tell the story of a 10-year-old boy. Although he had lost his left arm because of a car accident, he decided to study judo(柔道).
The boy learned from an experienced judo teacher. After three months of training, the teacher only taught him one move.
“Sir,” the boy finally asked, “why don’t you teach me more moves?” “This is the only move you know, but it’s the most useful move for you.” the teacher replied. The boy still didn’t understand it, but he believed in his teacher, so he kept on training.
Several month later, the teacher took the boy to his first competition. To his surprise, he easily won the first two matches. The third match was more difficult, but he used his move and reached the final.
This time, the boy’s competitor(对手) was stronger and more experienced. Everybody thought the boy would lose the match except the teacher. Finally, the boy won with his move.
On their way home, the boy asked, ”Sir, how could I win the matches with only one move?” “You won for two reasons,” the teacher answered. “First, you’ve already learned one of the difficult throws in judo. Second, the only defense (防御) against that move for your competitors is to catch your left arm.”
