Peter, 12
My family is really great. My parents and my brother Eric are very understanding and are always there when I need them. Eric is my best friend. When I have a problem, he is my adviser. We talk about everything. There are no secrets between us.
Mary, 13
I don’t have a good relationship with my parents. They are too strict with me. They never accept my opinion. They don’t listen to my problems: they simply don’t have the time or the will to do so. They’re too worried about their jobs and the only thing that matters to them is my marks.
Sam, 15
During the week, I almost never see my parents. They are always busy. And I have to take care of myself when they are at work. At weekends we spend a lot of time together. I will discuss football with my mother. She enjoys football as much as I do. My father will cook delicious food for us.
Jane, 14
Living with my mother, I see my father at weekends. He married again. He is understanding but we are not very close. My relationship with my mother is quite good, but she always worries too much about me. I used to imagine what my life would be like if they were still together. But recently I started to realize that they have their own ways to love me whether they are together or not.

When Tiana was a little girl, a boy named Rick made a joke about her Afro hair. Tiana felt hurt. The bad words, however, encouraged her to write a story about her hair and she hopes it will make other young people be proud of who they are.
Tiana wrote My Afro: Twin Best Friends when she was seven. It tells the story of Tia and her best friend Aaoki, who has the same type of hair as hers, “while everyone else has straight, curly or silky hair.” In the book, Tia and Aaoki like to dress and style their hair the same, but Tiana’s own Afro hair can be hard to manage. She said, “I wanted to show that people who have my type of hair have challenges and sometimes find it hard to love their hair.”
The young writer has been writing since she was three. Now, Tiana's book has sold more than 700 copies and she plans to write more stories. Her mum, Dorothy, as her very first reader, says Tiana’s stories are encouraging and she gets to know more about her daughter through her stories. Tiana says she’s had lots of replies from readers who also had trouble accepting their hair and it feels great to know that they are now confident to wear their special but lovely hair to school. Tiana also received a letter in the post saying sorry for the bad words he said years ago. Realizing who wrote this letter at once, Tiana smiled brightly.

Whether it’s putting your elbows on the table or talking with a mouth full of food, everyone has to watch their manners (礼仪) at some time. Manners have developed over thousands of years and are always changing. Around 100 years ago, children weren’t allowed to speak unless parents spoke to them first. Now young people can make their voices heard in many places.
Manners also mean different things in different countries. Eating food loudly is considered rude in some countries, but in others it’s a sign that people are enjoying their meal. What do you think, are manners important?
Many old people think so. They say kind words and actions are good to everyone. When someone has good manners, it shows they care about other people’s feelings and want them to be comfortable. In other words, well-mannered people make the world a happier place. Manners also help keep everyone healthy, which is why people should cover their mouths when they cough and keep dirty feet off seats.
However, some young men don’t think so. They hold the idea that manners make people act in a way that doesn’t mean how they really feel. If someone says “thank you” or “sorry” when they don’t mean it, they’re not being polite. In Europe, manners were a way of showing how rich a person was, but does it really matter what type of knife people use to eat fish? As long as people are kind to others, they should be allowed to act how they like.
11. Why are the table manners mentioned in Paragraph 1?A.To start the topic. | B.To keep the tradition. |
C.To show the importance of them. | D.To tell the young about them. |
A.By comparing. | B.In the order of time. |
C.By listing numbers. | D.In the order of space. |
A.We need to care about others. | B.Good manners are very important. |
C.Well-mannered people make us happy. | D.You can be healthy with good manners. |
A.They are easy to follow. | B.They are very necessary. |
C.They make people more relaxed. | D.They are less important than being kind. |
A.Saying sorry certainly means being polite. |
B.Eating fish with a knife shows you’re rich. |
C.Coughing with the mouth covered is strange. |
D.Eating loudly can be good manners sometimes. |
People across the UK have enjoyed the sunshine this week, but they have also been advised to be careful as a heatwave hits much of the country.
A heatwave is a period of unusually hot weather, especially one that continues for a long time. They usually happen in summer. However, as the main cause of heatwaves, climate change is increasing the chance of heatwaves happening and making them worse. Compared with the UK, the present hot weather is even more extreme in some European countries—temperatures in southern Spain have reached 41℃.
Heatwaves can be a great danger to people’s health, especially for the elderly, children and people with certain health conditions. However, anyone can be influenced by such heat. A group of UK scientists have suggested that, just as storms are given names, we should name heatwaves in order to raise awareness (意识) of the health risks.
The Met Office, the UK’s national weather service, has given a warning about the possible results caused by heatwaves. Temperatures are expected to rise to 35°C, and the record for the UK’s hottest day could be broken. To deal with hot weather, the MO says people should try to stay at home between 11 am and 3 pm, when temperatures are at their highest and the sun is strongest. Make sure you wear a hat and drink plenty of water. If you are swimming outdoors to cool down, make sure you’re with a trusted adult and follow local safety advice.

A.To put them under control. |

C.Drink much water. | D.Stay with friends. |

A giant panda is a kind of bear. It has a white face with black patches (块) around the eyes. It also has black ears, shoulders and legs. The rest of its body is white.
Pandas always choose bamboo forests as their homes. They live high up in the mountains of Southwest China, such as Ya’an and Pingwu in Sichuan Province.
How about their food? Pandas in the wild usually eat bamboo. In zoos, their menu includes bamboo, apples and carrots. A giant panda can eat as much as 30 kilos of bamboo a day. They need to eat a lot to stay healthy, so they spend more than 12 hours a day eating.
Sadly, giant pandas face serious problems in the wild. Losing homes is the most worrying, because some people are cutting down bamboo forests. Besides, it’s very difficult for pandas to have babies, and many baby pandas die when they are very young.
So we should take action right away. Here are some ideas. First, help pandas have more babies. Second, build more panda reserves (保护区). Third, make laws to protect pandas.
