How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park? Well that’s what’s happening in my community. There’s a park that some people want to turn into a golf course (高尔夫球场). Let me tell you why I think it’s a bad idea.
First, a park is meant to be for the whole community. Not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the park. This isn’t fair. A community park should have open spaces for everyone to use.
Second, to make way for the golf course, lots of playground equipment (设施) will have to be moved or knocked down, which is a waste of time and money. It’s also a waste of perfectly good equipment. The swings, for example, will probably just end up as litter.
Third, what about giving young people something to do? Not all kids are crazy about golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground. These attract lots of kids from the community. If you turn the park into a golf course, these kids won’t have anywhere to go and they won’t have anything to do. This means that they will stay at home and turn on a video game rather than get some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn’t it be better to give them something to do at the park?
Finally, golf is expensive. Building a golf course and maintaining (维护) it costs a lot of money. Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course? What about those people who can’t afford to join a golf club? That means that the golf course will only be available to people with lots of money.
Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I suggest we have a community meeting before plans go any further.
58. What do some people want to change the park into?A.A golf club. | B.A golf course. | C.A park. | D.A skating place. |
A. | B. | C. | D. |
60. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To help carry out further plans. |
B.To make the park more beautiful. |
C.To encourage children to go skating. |
D.To stop the golf course from being built. |
You might have seen beautiful rainbows in the sky before. They form when sunlight falls on water drops in the air. But in fact, moonlight can also create rainbows in the same way. They are called “moonbows”. They are similar to rainbows, but they are created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.
Moonbows are rarer than rainbows. Different weather and astronomical (天文学的) condition have to be just for moonbows to be created.
The moon has to be very low in the sky—only 42 from the horizon (地平线). The moon period has to be a full moon or nearly full. The sky must be very dark for a moonbow to be watched clearly—any bright light can obscure it. Water drops must appear in the air in the opposite direction of the moon.
Moonbows appear on the opposite side of the moon and usually look white to the human eye. This is because their colors are not bright enough to be noticed by the human eye. It is possible, however, to view the colors in a moonbow using long exposure(长时间曝光) photography.
Moonbows more often appear in some locations around the world. Most of these locations usually have waterfalls, which create thin fog in the air. Some of these locations are the Yosemite National Park in California and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Kentucky, US; Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe; and Waimea in Hawaii, US.
Moonbows do really happen. So at a certain time and a certain place, when a moonbow happens to appear, you can’t miss it if you’re right there.
61. According to the first two paragraphs, what can we know about the moonbows? ________
A.They are created by sunlight. |
B.They are much easier to find. |
C.They are seen during the day. |
D.They are more difficult to form. |

Arts venues, such as theaters, cinemas and opera houses, lost a lot of money during the pandemic (全国或全球性流行病) when they closed. The public missed out, too, because people couldn’t go to shows. Going to a show, especially around Christmas, is a treat. The excitement starts as the lights dim and the heavy curtain (幕布) rises. However, tickets can be very expensive: for example, it can cost more than ₤100 for a ticket to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Palace Theatre in London. Even when shows are not as costly, many people cannot afford the ticket prices, so they miss out. Some places are trying to make sure that nobody is left out because of cost by asking audiences to pay what they can afford. What do you think? Should all shows be “pay what you can”?
Agree | Disagree |
1. Arts and culture should be available to all, no matter your income or background. Pay what you can opens the arts to everyone. 2. Many arts venues are charities and also get public money, so they should give back to the audiences. 3. Being open and inclusive (包容的) may well lead people to give more money to the venues, so that more people can go to its shows. | 1. The price of the ticket reflects the quality of the art. “Pay what you can” would mean “pay nothing”, it makes the work seem less valuable. 2. Research found that it’s not the price of a ticket that puts people off going to see a show but the thought that the show won’t be any good. 3. It is expensive to put on a good show and those who enjoy the show should share in that cost and support the performers. |
Tell us what you think by voting (投票) at our website. We’ll publish the results next week.
65. What does the underlined word venues probably mean?A.Places where shows are put on. | B.Artists who play a part in the show. |
C.Musicians who give a concert | D.Tickets to the art performance. |
A.Write an e-mail. | B.Vote at a website. | C.Support the venues. | D.Get public money. |
A.Science and technology. | B.Health and sports. |
C.Culture and art. | D.Population and environment. |
A.Tell the public about a new measure of venues. | B.Draw the public’s interest to art and culture. |
C.Encourage the public not to pay for the shows. | D.Lead the public to think and discuss about the topic. |
March 25 is called the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students (NDESEMSS全国中小学生安全教育日). The theme of the day this year is to give students more knowledge about safety and make sure that their lives are safe.
A survey done by the China Youth and Children Research Center showed that school accidents kill more elementary and middle school students than anything else. The main accidents come from stampedes (踩踏), earthquakes, fires and sports injuries (伤害).
What can we do to keep ourselves safe? Staying calm (镇静) is the first and most important rule when facing accidents. But different incidents have different self-protection advice.
A stampede is possible anywhere. The larger a human crowd gets, the more likely stampedes become. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands.
Earthquakes are common natural disasters (灾害). When you feel the ground shake, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoors, don’t stay near buildings, trees or power lines.
When there’s a fire, follow the teachers’ instructions, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.
69. What knowledge does the theme of NDESEMSS this year want to give students?A.Accidents and make them run away. |

C.Science and make their study better. |
D.Safety and make sure that their lives are safe. |
