Two years ago, Porter was ten. He knew his father’s friend had cancer. Porter and his father went to see him. Porter made a carrot cake and brought it to him because it was the friend’s favorite treat. Porter’s grandmother also had cancer. Porter felt he should make a difference.
One night Porter talked with his dad and came up with a plan to help people with cancer. They called it “Nothing But Carrot Cake”. They would sell carrot cakes, and the money would go to cancer research.
Porter’s family gave him $ 1 ,000 to get started. That was used to buy some things needed to make the cakes. And then, Porter’s business started. He sold more than 200 cakes and raised over $ 10,000. That was about $ 9,900 more than he had ever thought. “My goal was to raise $ 100. I never thought I’d ever raise that much,” Porter said.
Porter’s dad also encouraged him to join in a competition to draw iced tea. It asked kids to draw a picture of their own favorite flavors (口味). Porter created a flavor and called it “Porter’s Peach”. After he handed in his drawing, a staff person of the activity learned more about him. His story made the leader of the company join the fight against cancer.

If parents want their children to have healthy eating habits, they can ask their children to learn to cook. When children learn to cook, they can know more about healthy food and cooking skills.
A school in Canada finds that more children eat fruit and vegetables after taking cooking classes. The school also finds that joining the cooking clubs can improve children’s lifestyles (生活方式) and make them want healthy food.
In the UK, many schools have cooking classes for students aged between 12 and 16. They take three hours’ classes before practicing cooking. Since 2007, a cooking activity called “Let’s Get Cooking” has helped more than 1.7 million children improve their cooking skills, through more than 5,000 school cooking clubs.
A few days ago, people did a study among 2,500 students of the activity. It showed that 92% of them used their cooking skills at home. Over half of the students said they ate more healthily after they learned to cook.
Let children learn to cook and have some cooking classes. They’ll live a healthier life by cooking!

Are children smarter than adults? The answer is “yes” when they learn new things. A new study shows that kids pick up new knowledge and skills faster than adults.
The study was carried out by famous scientists around the world. In the study, some kids and adults learned the same lessons of new information and skills. The children were 8 to 11 years old. And the adults were 18 to 35 years old. The scientists looked at their GABA (Y-氨基丁酸) levels before, during and after these lessons. GABA is a chemical (化学物质) that our brains produce. It helps us remember newly learned information.
According to the study, the GABA levels in the children’s brains increased quickly during the lessons. This increase lasted for several minutes after the lessons were over. In the adults, however, there was no change in their GABA levels during or after the lessons.
The scientists tested their learning. The results found that the children did learn better. They learned more in the same amount of time than the adults.
This study encourages people to give children more chances to learn new skills. It could also be used to help adults learn faster. “We might develop a new technology, for example, to increase the amount of GABA in adults’ brain,” said one of the scientists.
67. What is the article mainly used to introduce?A.A science lesson. | B.A science research. |
C.A special chemical. | D.A group of scientists. |
A.Because they’re young enough to accept more new knowledge. |
B.Because the adults are too busy to get more new knowledge. |

Scientists say they have found plastic particles snow in the Arctic (北极地区). The snow isn’t only made of water?
German scientists have recently found microplastics (微塑料) in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic that are smaller than 5 millimeters (毫米) in length. They’re found not only in our air, but in our water. They end up in our wastewater when we use washing machines to wash clothes with plastic fibers (塑料纤维). The scientists found 1,800 pieces of microplastics per liter of Arctic snow.
How do microplastics travel so far? According to scientists, they fall off plastic objects and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow.
Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in our air. There are even more of these plastics in the snow around cities.
Are they bad for us? Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the World Health Organization. We all know that our bodies can’t take in big pieces of microplastic. But if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time. This can be bad for our health.
71. What do we know about microplastics?A.They’re a new kind of plastic. |
B.They’re light and can travel far. |
C.Scientists only find them in snow. |
D.They’re impossible to see. |
A.New findings about microplastics. |
B.Whether microplastics are dangerous or not. |
C.How microplastics end up inside our bodies. |
D.How to get rid of microplastics. |
A.The new finding about microplastics isn’t good. |
B.People don’t need to worry about microplastics. |
C.There are many ways to get rid of microplastics. |
D.They’ll be a bigger problem in the future. |

One day, a man heard some people saying something about him. While hiding behind a tree, he listened carefully. Then he became sad because they were saying he was too proud. From that day on, he thought everyone in the town was speaking ill of him.
Because of this, he was always nervous. His wife took him to a master. After listening to the story, the master said, “Stay in my house tonight.”
The man agreed. When he was in bed at night, the sound of croaking (呱呱叫) of frogs fell in his ears. He couldn’t sleep at all. The next morning, he went to the master and said, “There are hundreds of frogs in your pool. Will you allow me to take them to a far river?” The master nodded. Then the man went to the pool with a net. But he found there weren’t many frogs in the pool. “Where are the hundreds of frogs?” the man asked.
“Even at night, there were only some frogs. It was the noise that made you think their number was large. When you heard some people speaking ill of you, you thought everyone did so.
