On April Fool’s Day, it’s always fun to get someone a surprise with hoaxes. Here are two interesting hoaxes for you to enjoy.
Story 1: The Left-handed Whopper 1998: Burger King published (发布) a full page advertisement in a newspaper. They announced they had invented a new kind of hamburger, a Left-handed Whopper. The hamburgers were specially designed for the thirty-two million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new hamburgers included the same ingredients (成分) as the common hamburgers, but all the Left-handed Whoppers were rotated (旋转) 180 degrees to suit left-handed customers. Though the following day Burger King announced that the Left-handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to order the new hamburgers. |

The TV station’s technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a new skill, people could change their black and white TV sets into color reception (接收). When Juliet was a child, she often went to the city park and played with her friends. On a sunny morning, when Juliet came to the park with her mom, she looked around and felt very unhappy.
“What’s the matter, dear? What’s wrong with you?” asked her mom.
Juliet replied, “Mom, how beautiful and clean it used to be! But now there’s so much trash on the ground.”
Juliet’s mom looked around. There were scraps (碎片) of paper, boxes, glass bottles and a lot of other trash everywhere.
“What can we do?” asked Juliet sadly.
“I’m sure you will think of something,” said her mom.

In this game, you’re given six letters and you need to think about how many words can be spelled with those letters. You have two and a half minutes to think of every word. With some practice, it can be a fun way to improve your English vocabulary. You’ll get some good practice by quickly thinking of English words-a skill that will be useful in real-life English conversations.

Fishbowl

Humans have always been interested in the moon. About 2, 000 years ago, scientists had already known that the moon moves around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. In old times, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully at night.
When scientists could use telescopes (望远镜) to study the moon more closely, they found the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that was caught in the earth’s gravity millions of years ago.
In 1969, moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again, new ideas were needed for this new study.
After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of the earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 million years ago, something that was about the size of Mars hit the earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.
Humans’ steps of exploring the moon will never stop. In the future, even though our ideas about the moon may change again, we’ll still show an interest in it.
