Fu Zai, a cute six-month-old corgi, who has been trained to be China’s first corgi police dog, met the public during the opening day of a police camp in Weifang, Shandong province.
In many people’s eyes, these cute dogs with “little short legs” cannot join the police force. At first, some people doubted if he could run fast enough and catch criminals. Unlike the tall dogs, Fu Zai won this job thanks to his excellent abilities. Having got four months of training, Fu Zai now can take advantage of his short legs to directly get under cars and easily get into small spaces. There he can search for people or dangerous objects. And his lovely smile quickly makes him famous through the Internet.
Zhao Qingshuai, Fu Zai’s coach and partner, says, “Because of the love for Fu Zai, people are happier to see us around now.”

Should Libraries Charge Late Fees (滞纳金)? We have nearly 240,000 members of libraries in the city. More than 530,000 books are borrowed each year. All kinds of books and good services of libraries in our city bring more readers. However, some borrowers will feel upset when they are asked to pay late fees if they return a book later than its due date. What do you think of this rule? Welcome to share your ideas. Your choices will make a different. |
Nancy Libraries should not charge late fees. Some people borrow books from public libraries and return them late. It’s often just a mistake. It takes time to finish reading a book, especially when it’s interesting but difficult to read. I think sending reminders can work better. |
Judy I think this is necessary. You might not get a chance to discover new books if others don’t return the books on time. Paying a fee will teach them to be more responsible. The money will help the library buy more good books, and it can also be used to make the library a better place. |
Mario It might seem reasonable for libraries to ask for late fees, but in fact it stops people from going to the library again. Libraries should encourage reading, and late fees just do the opposite. They make borrowing a library book unworthy of the trouble. The late fees at some libraries have reached 50 yuan and many kids can’t afford it. |
Jimmy It’s important for libraries to charge late fees. If there is no punishment for late returns, people may not make an effort to return books on time. When you borrow a book from the library, you’re promising to read it within the time limit, to keep it safe and to bring it back on time. People should keep their promises. |

Have you heard of the horse-face skirts? These Chinese skirts date back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). They have beautiful patterns and folds on both sides. And there are openings in the front and back of the skirts. This style is called “mamian”.
In Song Dynasty, women used to wear the horse-face skirts when they rode donkeys or horses. The openings make it convenient for women to get on and off them. In the next hundreds of years, these skirts have become more and more beautiful. In 2022, many hanfu lovers began to spread the knowledge of the skirts. This helped more people learn about traditional Chinese clothes. “For us, wearing the skirts is not just for fashion,” said Mao, one of the hanfu lovers, “It also shows our love for Chinese culture.”
Recently, the skirts have gotten even more popular. Many famous Chinese people have worn them to international events. And during this past Spring Festival, lots of young people wore the skirts when they went on trips.
People in other countries like these skirts, too. Chinese clothing factories have gotten a lot of orders for them from abroad. A report studied how popular the skirts were among foreign users of some short video apps. What did the report find? Last year, users from more than 90 countries shared something about the skirts!
Besides the skirts, “new Chinese-style clothes” is also a hot topic. These clothes add traditional Chinese symbols to modern fashion. They have won the hearts of many people around the world.

Chinese chopsticks are a pair of sticks to be used when eating. They were first used in China and then introduced to other areas in the world. Chopsticks are considered one of the symbols of Chinese food culture.
When were chopsticks invented? In fact, before the invention of chopsticks, Chinese ancestors actually used hands to eat. Chinese people started to use chopsticks about 3,000 years ago during the Shang Dynasty. During the pre-Qin period, chopsticks were called “Jia”, and in the Qin and Han Dynasties, they were called “Zhu”. Because “Zhu” shares the same pronunciation with “stop” in Chinese, which is an unlucky word, by the Ming Dynasty people began to call them “Kuai”, meaning “fast” in Chinese. This is the origin of today’s name of Chinese chopsticks.
Who invented chopsticks? There is no exact historical record about the question, but there are many folk stories about it. One story is that Jiang Ziya was inspired to create chopsticks by a mythical (神话中的) bird. Another one is that Daji, the favorite wife of the King Zhou of Shang, invented chopsticks in order to please the king. It is also said that Yu the Great, who founded the Xia Dynasty used sticks to pick up hot food in order to save time to control flood.
What should we pay attention to when using chopsticks? When eating with the elders, Chinese people usually let the elders take up chopsticks before anyone else. Besides, playing with chopsticks is thought to be a bad manner. It’s also impolite to tap chopsticks on one’s bowl, because in ancient China beggars (乞丐) often did it to draw attention.
