(Georgia Roy is a paramedic (急救员). She spoke to Craig Jackson from Out and About magazine.)
Craig: What’s it like to work as a paramedic, Georgia?
Georgia: Every day is different, because we get so many different calls for help. We might go to a car accident or to a house where someone is sick. Some days are very busy and some days are quiet. Sometimes we work during the day and sometimes we work at night. I always work with a partner—another paramedic. When we get a call from someone, we get into the ambulance (救护车) and drive to them as quickly as we can. We use the siren (警报器) to tell other drivers to move out of our way.
Craig: What makes a good paramedic?
Georgia: You have to be good at talking to people. You have to stay calm and quickly find out what the problem is. Sometimes we can help them, but sometimes we have to take them to the hospital.
Craig: What do you do in between calls?
Georgia: When we’re not out on the road, my partner and I check the ambulance. We check the medicines and something necessary for treatment.
Craig: What’s the best thing about your job?
Georgia: I just like giving help to people when they need it most. Once a woman had a baby in the ambulance. That was amazing!

Have you enjoyed reading in a forest? Or have you seen a library surrounded by trees? The first “forest library” in Shanghai gives readers the chance to relax and read in a natural environment.
Known as Read&Joy Forest, the forest library is located in a green space area near Shanghai Library East. Covering an area of 20,546 square meters, it allows visitors to take a pleasant walk in the quiet and green forest.
The library is designed to keep the forest as it is. The green spaces are connected by wooden walkways. The library with chairs and an information board, is in the open air.
“I learned about the forest library from my friends, and I came here,” said Ms. Wang, a college student. “There are lots of different kinds of trees there. This special environment helps kill the pain of my eyes. I will come back for sure.”
“Having a library in the woods is an extension (延伸) of reading indoors,” according to Xu Qiang, one of the leaders of Shanghai Library. “It offers different reading experiences to readers.”
Most of the visitors to the forest library were young people and parents with their children. They either focused on (专注于) reading or simply took a walk in the forest. “I was really attracted by the fresh air and the smell of the trees here. I’ve spent the whole morning indoors, and want to get some fresh air. The library makes it possible to enjoy reading in a comfortable environment. I feel very relaxed here,” said one reader sitting on a chair.

①More researchers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor the environment and support endangered creatures (生物). Unlike traditional methods that are harmful to the environment or require much time and physical work, AI has the ability to quickly deal with large quantities of data (数据).
②Creatures are disappearing at a speed thousands of times faster than that millions of years ago. The UN set a goal in 2020 to protect at least 30% of the Earth’s land and oceans by the end of 2030. “AI is ‘imperfect’ but could make important discoveries faster and earlier,” says Nicolas Mialhe, founder of The Future Society, an organization that aims to better manage AI. “We need skilled humans to design AI models and check and collect data.”
③A type of AI model called convolutional neural network (CNN) has been developed to recognize bird sounds. The CNN is able to pick out 75 kinds of the bird sounds. “Our results prove that AI is ready for recognizing creatures in the wild from sound,” says Maller, the team leader, “All that is needed now is more training data collected by humans.”
④Besides monitoring creatures in real time, AI can be used to model the influences of human activities on the environment. Researchers have used AI to discover how a century’s environmental damage (损害) in a river has led to creature loss. Although it is well-known that human activities have resulted in creature loss in rivers and lakes, little is known about which activities have the largest influence. “AI will do soon,” says Luisa Orsini, a researcher from the University of Birmingham.
27. What can we learn from what Nicolas Miailhe and Maller said?A.AI models can collect data themselves. |
B.AI models have already developed perfectly. |
C.AI’s ability is much greater than people imagine. |
D.AI’s ability can be achieved without human support. |
