“Atishoo!” Jack sneezes (打喷嚏).
“I hope you haven’t got a cold,” Mom feels Jack’s head. “Warm, but not a fever.” Mom gives Jack a piece of paper. “Sneeze into this if you have to. We don’t want you to spread germs.”
“Germs? Which can make me ill?” Jack shakes his head. “It’s only a sneeze!”
“Yes, but if you have a cold, you can spread a lot of cold germs with a sneeze.”
“But I don’t see germs anywhere around me!” Jack says.
“You can’t see them with your eyes because they are too small. But you can spread them easily with sneezes. Now come with me.”
Mom takes Jack to the kitchen. She takes out a bag of flour (面粉) and puts some onto her hand. Then she holds it close to her face and sneezes — that little bit of flour is all over the kitchen.
“So now you know why I gave you the paper?” asks Mom.
“I know what you mean. But is this the only way for me to keep away from germs?” says Jack.
“Of course not. There are other ways too,” says Mom. “For example, always wash your hands with running water after you use the bathroom or play with animals. Put soap all over your hands-fronts, backs, and between the fingers. It’s best to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. That’s how long it takes to sing Happy Birthday song twice. Then wash all of the soap off your hands with clean water. Last, remember to dry your hands because wet hands can still spread germs.”
Jack does as Mom says. He doesn’t have a cold and doesn’t even sneeze again. Now he is just fine!
