After a long week at work, I could finally go to the beach by myself. It was a lovely time watching families come and go for a warm weekend here in California.
After a few hours, I noticed a little girl playing by herself. It looked like she built a sandcastle (沙堡) and was now trying to fill it with water. The sandcastle looked beautiful in the summer sunshine.
Unluckily, there was no container around to carry water. She would go to the waves, cup her hands and then walk back to her little castle. Sadly, not much of the water was making it to the castle. But she kept trying and was still smiling and hopeful. So I wished I could help her out.
As I was standing there watching her, I suddenly realized I had a bottle of water in my bag. I quickly dug in, took it out, and walked over to hand it to her.
Uncertain of what to do first, she shook her head shyly, saying no. I reassured (安慰) her it would make getting the water faster. She smiled widely and finally took it. Not wanting her to feel uncomfortable, I walked off the beach right away.
Looking back at her running to the sea with the same big smile, I know when she notices someone needs help in her life, she will recall this little act of kindness by a stranger. And then a gentle world will be around her.

In every country, there are thousands of people who want to help out. Many join organizations run by their governments. For example, the Peace Corps in the United States and Voluntary Service Overseas in Britain. Since the powerful earthquake took place in Sichuan, more than 200 thousand volunteers across China have been helping there! They do all kinds of work or come up with ways to help improve life. Some offer their professional skills for free. Others have no qualifications (资历), but they love to work hard to help.
One of the most famous volunteers in the world was Mother Teresa. She could be the best volunteer because she gave her life to helping the poorest people of Calcutta. She helped the homeless, cared for the sick, gave out food, and became the mother of those without families.
Now more and more teenagers actively look for volunteering opportunities, too. They volunteer because they think it will be fun or they will learn something. They also like the idea of being helpful to others, even if it is just handing out books for the teacher. As they get older, these reasons are still the same, but there are other important reasons for volunteering such as learning on-the-job, getting work experience, and improving their social life.
All volunteers bring joy to the people they help in so many ways. They might read books to the blind, fix up broken houses, and find ways to get water for villages. Could you be a volunteer? What kind of volunteer work could you do? There is someone in the world who needs you.

In China, safety education is becoming more and more important now. The last Monday in March is for students to learn it at school. It helps students learn more about what they should do to keep themselves safe. What are the accidents at school? Take a look.
A stampede (踩踏) always happens in crowded places. When students around you begin to push, just stand there and try to hold onto something. If you fall down in the crowd, move to one side and protect (保护) your head with your hands around.
When earthquakes happen, you can get under a desk quickly and hold on. It’ll protect you from falling things. If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. In this way, you won’t breathe in smoke. Many people die in a fire, not because of the fire but smoke. It makes them cough and they can’t breathe. That’s very dangerous! So when you want to get out, you should make yourself close to the floor. Then you can breathe some fresh air.
Stampedes, earthquakes and fires are the main accidents at school. And next time, if something terrible happens, we are sure you can protect yourself successfully as the above says.
50. In the passage, where do these main accidents happen?A.At school. | B.At home. | C.On the farm. | D.In the open air. |
