There was once a boy called Tony. He always loved to show off (炫耀) how many friends he had at school. One day his grandfather said to him, “Tony, I bet (打赌) you don’t have as many friends as you think. I’m sure many of them are nothing more than companions (同伴).”
Tony accepted the bet at once. However, he wasn’t sure how to test if his classmates were real friends. The old man then left and returned soon as if (好像) carrying something in his hands, but Tony could see nothing there.
“Take it. It’s a very special chair because it’s impossible to be seen. It’s rather difficult to sit on, but if you take it to school and manage to sit on it , you’ll start its magic (魔力) and it’ll be able to tell who your real friends are.”
Tony went to school with the invisible (隐形的) chair. He asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. Having difficulty seeing it, Tony tried to sit on the chair but he missed the seat and fell straight onto his backside. Everyone around him laughed.
“Wait! Let me try again,” Tony said. But again, he missed the seat, causing more laughter. Tony didn’t give up and kept trying to sit on the magic chair. But he kept falling to the ground until suddenly he tried again but didn’t fall. Looking around, Tony saw three of his best friends holding him up. In life, many people are always ready to help others and they ask for nothing in return. We call those people volunteers. But why do they do that? Read on.
Volunteering is good for your resume (简历). Your experience of being a volunteer gives the interviewer a clearer picture of who you are. According to a survey, 1 out of 5 interviewers in the US agreed that volunteer experience was an important reason for giving someone a job.
Being a volunteer sets a good example for others. By volunteering, you encourage (鼓励) others to make good changes. Serving food at a food bank and working with teenagers in an after-school activity are also great examples to make others love volunteering.
Meeting people who have similar interests and ideas becomes easy. The way someone chooses to spend his or her free time shows the person’s values (价值观). Sharing the same values while helping others is a great way to make new friends. By volunteering, you will have more friends in a short time.
“Doing good” is important. Every day we may watch or hear sad news and stories. However, volunteering is a good way to make the world a better place. Even a simple thing can make a difference. If we all join together, those simple things can add up to a big change!
Volunteering is never difficult. There is always a group for you. To find the right group to join, you just need to use the Internet.

Many social media posts (帖子) may let you believe that everyone is happy all the time, but being happy all the time is simply not possible.
As a teenager, you probably expected to get good grades in an exam or to win the most important basketball game, but it didn’t happen. Good results make you happy and bad results make you sad. But sadness itself is not bad, it can drive you to improve yourself next time.
However, when people feel sad for a long time and it starts to affect (影响) their daily lives, it’s called depression (抑郁). You don’t want to get out of bed in the morning. You don’t feel like studying or going out with your friends. I remember the same feeling when my dog Rebel died in an accident. I remember that it followed me to school, wagging (摇) its tail at the school gate. Now it was gone, and I lost all interests to do anything.
My parents told me that my expectations were unrealistic. Dogs don’t live forever. Moreover, Rebel had a good life. If I have a good life, Rebel must be happy, too.
Depression is not to show your weakness, it’s part of our character. It is not a person’s fault (过错). Just know that many famous people, like the author J. K. Rowling and the comedy actor Jim Carey, have said that they once get depressed. It’s normal for people to feel down or sad sometimes. So you should know what to do to stop depression or make yourself less depressed.
When you feel down, you must not keep yourself away from the world. Try to share your feelings with a family member, a good friend or a teacher. Whenever you feel depressed, stand up, open the window, and throw away the sadness and be happy.

Sometimes you feel worried. Sometimes you feel like you want to improve yourself. How do you make yourself feel better or learn new skills?
Many of the self-help books are written by famous people or psychologists (心理学家).
Julie Hall from London is a big fan of self-help books. After reading more than 300 of them, she set up her own self-help website (网页). Her website helps women succeed in the business world. “They (self-help books) can give you the courage (勇气) to do whatever you want to do,” she said.
However, a recent study by the University of Montreal in Canada might not agree with that.
Do self-help books really work? You may need to read one to find out.
A.Millions of these books were sold in the UK in 2023. |
B.Experts (专家) chose two groups of people to study. |
C.They teach you how to deal with problems in your life. |

Farming seems to be an old way of living. But now, farms are coming to modern buildings and you can even see them on a balcony (阳台).
According to Alibaba, more and more people buy vegetable seeds (种子) on T-mall this year. Most of them were born (出生) after 1995.
Zhang Chao, 17, is one of the young “city farmers”. The senior high student said his love for growing vegetables came from the days when he lived with his grandpa in the countryside.
“Spending his whole life as a farmer, my grandpa liked to grow vegetables in our garden when he was older,” Zhang said. “I also learned from him to grow my own vegetables on my balcony, and it brought me good memories (回忆).”
Unlike Zhang, Yang Jing from a university thinks differently.
“I have too much homework every day. I always thought my boring life never ended. But when I saw the balcony idea from a website, my life changed! I started planting vegetables on my balcony one year ago. I got most of the seeds from my friends, but I didn’t know what plant seeds they were. So I just planted them and waited patiently. Half a year later, my balcony became a small beautiful garden. Now, every time I spend long hours on homework, I would like to walk to my balcony to relax,” said Yang.
Now, planting on a balcony is welcomed by more and more young people. As a teenager, would you like to have a try?
