We often talk about global warming. Do you know how does global warming happens? This experiment (实验) helps you learn how a greenhouse works, and how greenhouse gases influence the earth’s atmosphere.
What You Need:
·Two thermometers
·A notebook
·A pencil or pen
·A clear bottle
·A watch or clock
·A sunny area
What You Do:
(1)Put the thermometers in direct sunlight. Let them sit in the sun for three minutes.
(2)Draw two columns (栏), “Thermometer A” and “Thermometer B”, in the notebook.
(3)After the three minutes, read and record the time and temperatures in the notebook.
(4) Place one of the thermometers in the bottle and close it.
(5)Record the temperatures of the thermometers every ten minutes.
(6)Discuss how the bottle influences the temperature.
What’s Going On?
The temperature outside the bottle is changing, as the warm air mixes with the passing cooler air. The air inside the bottle can’t mix with the air outside—it just gets warmer as the sunlight heats it up. A greenhouse works in a similar way: sunlight creates heat that can’t get out of the glass.

A number of other inventions also took hold. At the end of the Tang dynasty, the invention of printing led to the creation of books. Hundreds of years would pass before printing was invented in Europe.

Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists recently found that they were used in historic paintings, too.
To preserve (保存) Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what ancient paint was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the original artwork.
According to their paper published in Science Advances, grains (谷物) and yeast (醇母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent grains and yeast.
The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.
Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help preserve artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the yolk’s proteins helped slow the oxidation (氧化) of the paint. It could also reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth.
However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists—they were willing to accept to have their work preserved for longer.
“The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can appreciate (欣赏) what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.
42. Why were beer by-products used in historic Danish paintings?A.To help the colors stick better. | B.To keep the paintings clean. |
C.To make the paintings more colorful. | D.To give the painting a different feel. |
A.kept. | B.shared. | C.discovered. | D.explored. |
A.The paint could age faster. | B.The paint could dry more quickly. |
C.The paint’s colors could be nicer. | D.The paint could feel smoother. |
A.it’s easy to appreciate artworks in the right methods |
B.it’s important to understand the minds of artists |
C.it’s hard to research early artworks |
D.it’s necessary to help people understand artworks |

That evening, the steamboat stopped at Louisville, where Lucy’s husband worked. When they shouted the name of the place, she put her coat between her bags on the sleeping child. Then she ran to the side of the steamboat, hoping to see her husband.
Suddenly, Haley took the baby and gave it to the buyer. “Don’t wake him up.” The man took the child and got off the steamboat.
When they left Louisville, Lucy returned to her seat.
“Lucy,” said the trader, “you know you couldn’t take your child down south. I sold him to a very good family that will take care of him better than you can.”
Lucy sat down. She looked calm.
Tom saw everything, and he was crying. He went to sit with Lucy, and tried to comfort her, but she didn’t want to listen.
Night came and everybody went to sleep. But something woke Tom up at midnight. He saw something black move quickly to the side of the boat, and he heard a splash (落水声) in the water. He got up and saw that Lucy wasn’t there.
The next morning Haley wrote her name in his accounts book under losses.
Haley started to trust Tom. At night Tom had to sleep in chains, but during the day he was free to walk around the boat. He often helped the workmen on the boat, and everybody liked him.
A rich man, St Clare was travelling with his daughter, Eva, who was about five years old. She was a beautiful child, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was always busy or running around, and Tom noticed her and thought that she looked like an angel.
She often went where the slaves sat in chains and looked at them with sad eyes. Sometimes she brought them food. She liked Tom and hoped her father could buy Tom.
Later that day, Eva moved too quickly on the side of the boat and fell into the water.
Tom saw everything and he jumped into the water immediately. He caught her and swam back to the boat. Eva was saved.
The next day, St Clare bought Tom at high price.
