Sitting in the garden, Newton watched an apple fall from a tree. He began to wonder if the same force that pulled the apple down also kept the moon-circling the earth. Newton believed it did. He called it “gravity (重力)”.
This story has become one of the most popular examples of “eureka” moments. But when we cheer for the great discovery, the whole process of creative thinking shouldn’t be forgotten.
Newton studied mathematics for long to have a better understanding of the world. He always enjoyed finding new ways to solve problems. The falling apple was only the fruit of years of hard work before. It also started the train of thought that continued for the next twenty years.
Newton began to examine “gravity” carefully. He experimented. Then he studied the results and used what he had learned to do new experiments. In 1687, the greatest scientific work ever written came out.
The whole process of creative thinking works the same in our life. In school, we prepare ourselves for the right moment. Once the moment comes, we catch it and then keep on working in the years to come. It takes much to get the fruits of creative thinking, but the sweetest fruits will be ready for those who wait the longest.

Green is more than just a color. It also means taking special steps to protect the environment. How to decide whether a product is green? Here is what we may keep in mind.
The materials of a product are usually our first focus. Green products are made of more natural materials which are free from harmful chemicals, so they can be good for our physical health.
Packaging is important. We’d better choose glass, metal and paper packaging, as these can be reused or more easily recycled. We can also look for less packaging or even choose unbagged products whenever possible.
Location (地点) matters. Think about how much energy was used to get it. To us, try to choose local products. When it comes to food, it is a good idea to order directly from local farmer, shop at markets and buy fruits in season.
Look into what the company tells us about their product. It’s easy to say that a product is “green” or “all natural”, but the words may be too good to be true. So, much of the information about a product should be taken with a grain of salt.
Better than buying is choosing to leave an unnecessary product in the store. It sends a message to the producer, keeps money in our pockets, reduces waste and keeps the planet healthy.
43. How are green products? ________A.They look green. |
B.They are healthy. |
C.They are free. |
D.They are unnecessary. |
A.Get a product over packaged. |

D.What the company tells us about the product cannot be quickly forgotten. |
A.Buying Green |
B.Recycling Waste |
C.Keeping Healthy |
D.Reducing Energy Use |
Some schools and parents used to measure the success of their children according to grades, but now they pay special attention to moral (道德的) education and character-building to make sure teenagers achieve success in building human relationships.
Schools give chances to students to discover their hidden ability so that they can enjoy some form of success. For example, those good at speaking skills are advised to take part in speech competitions while those interested in arts are expected to perform in front of their classmates. Teenagers also get the pleasure of success when they join their favorite clubs.
Teenagers are often told that success is not easy to achieve and that success lies in hard work. Great efforts have to be put into project work. Doing things much later than planned should be avoided as this will lead to a mountain of work which finally makes them nervous. Another good quality is a sense of responsibility which makes them remember that a task has to be completed.
Sticking to moral values is the key to success too. Honest teenagers will win the trust of friends leading to good relationships. Self-motivation (自我激励) is another quality to be developed for self-motivated teenagers will have the strong will and drive to perform a task and finally get to enjoy a sense of achievement.

How long does a year last? Children might say that a year last forever. But your parents might say that a whole year can pass quickly. How does time seem to pass faster as we get older?
According to scientists from Duke University, US, our brains degrade (退化) and change over time. This change makes us take in and process (加工) new information more slowly.
Babies, for example, move their eyes much more often than adults because they’re processing images (图像) faster. They take in a lot of information and do many things in a single day. This makes them feel like a single day lasts for a long time.
However, as people’s brains degrade over time, fewer images are processed in the same time. Therefore, older people receive less information during a day than the younger. This causes things to seem as thought they’re happening more quickly.
In addition, people may also “feel” time differently for psychological (心理的) reasons. People may measure time by the number of memorable events that can be recalled within a certain period.
50. According to the passage, what do children think of a year? ________A.It passes quickly. |
B.It’s a long time. |
C.It seems boring. |
D.It’s the same as a day. |

Almost every Saturday morning, Molly pulls a table into her front yard. On the table she lays out some vegetables in season, such as carrots and tomatoes. They are all from her garden and free for her neighbors to take away. “It’s just lovely, like you walk by and get a beautiful gift around the corner,” said a neighbor.
Molly has started doing this since the summer of 2020. Earlier that year, a fire broke out in her house. Molly’s family had a hard time. “People in the community came to help. They brought us food and often called to make sure we were doing fine. I was deeply moved.” Molly said.
Then the pandemic (疫情) came. Molly and her family had much time to work in their garden. They decided to share what they grew in their garden. No one knew about it at first. But slowly, people got into the habit of coming around. They would stop by and leave with some vegetables. Molly’s yard became a popular place.
One thing Molly has learned from this experience is that people have to work together when days are difficult. She is glad that love has spread in this community.
