Lucky is a bird who grows up in a cage (笼子) . For Lucky, the life in the cage isn’t like what you think. It is quite ________. In the cage, Lucky has a big “house” to live in and ________ food to enjoy. And he never needs to ________ the dangerous cat outside the cage. Lucky stays in the cage all day long. He thinks all birds live a happy life ________ his.

One day, Lucky finds the door of his cage is ________. “Why don’t I go and see the outside world?” Lucky thinks. “It ________ like a good idea.” He walks out of the cage, flies out of the window and then flies into the sky.

Lucky flies very high. He looks at the buildings ________ him and feels nice. He sees other ________ walking in the square (广场) freely, looking for food by themselves and playing together happily. “The outside world is great. I will ________ go back to the cage,” Lucky says.

When I was young, I lived in Scotland with my parents. I had a good time there. One morning, I ran to the garden, and said to the old gardener. “Today I am going up the mountain.”

“No, no, Missey, not today,” he said, “It will rain.”

“No, it will not rain.” I said. “The sun is up.”

“I don’t care for the sun. The pimpernel (海绿) says it will rain, so it will. Flowers always tell the truth. When they say rain, go and get your umbrella.” said the old man.

Sure enough, by noon the rain was pouring (倾倒) down. After that, I looked with great respect (崇敬) at the flower. But the pimpernel is not the only plant that is a “weather prophet”(预言者).

If you find the African marigolds (金盏花) shut (合上) after seven o’clock in the morning, you may be pretty sure that there will be a rainy day. Most “weather prophet” plants shut up for rain. Tulips (郁金香) are careful not to open their cups very wide in the morning if it is probably going to rain. The cause of the opening and closing may be the difference in light. Perhaps these plants shut their flowers because of the short of light.

But some plants open for rain. The verbenas (马鞭草) are one kind of them. They love the shade and become smaller in a strong light. The roses make no changes. The light seems to make no difference to them.

On the whole, if you go into your garden, and find tulips, marigolds shut, you’d better not go for picnics or long walks.

Food

☆You need to be sure that you know when your new pet need food and what food is good for it.

☆Most animals need to be fed once or twice a day. Sometimes baby animals need to be fed more.

☆ Don’t give chocolate to your pet because it can make most animals sick.

Water

☆ Make sure that your pet has enough clean, fresh water. Make sure that you change the water twice a day.

☆ If your pet is a fish or a turtle, be sure to clean the tank (缸) at least once a week.

Exercise

☆ Pets, like dogs, need plenty of exercise. It helps them to keep healthy and happy. Don’t forget to take them for a walk. Play with your dog every day. The exercise is good for you, too.

Last Friday a storm swept through (席卷) two villages in the New Territories, destroying (毁坏) fourteen homes. Seven others were so badly damaged (损毁) that their owners had to leave them, and then fifteen others had broken windows or roofs. One person was killed, several were badly hurt and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received smaller injuries (受伤). Altogether over two hundred people were homeless after the storm.

A farmer, Mr. Li, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour. “I was eating with my wife and children” he said, “when we heard a loud noise. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We tried our best to climb out but then I saw that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him safe but very scared.” Mrs. Wu said that her husband had just left for work when she felt that her house was moving. She ran outside at once with her children. “There was no time to take anything,” she said. A few minutes later, the roof came down. Soldiers helped to take people out of the flooded (水淹的) area. The welfare department (福利机构) brought them food, clothes and shelters so they aren’t hungry, cold and also they have living places.

Recently, because more students use computers for a long time to have online lessons, more of them are feeling eyestrain（眼睛疲劳). A lot of eye doctors have studied this problem and have found ways to solve it. Following their advice will help keep computer users more comfortable.

★Lighting

The light in a room shouldn’t be brighter （明亮的） than that of the computer screen. Maybe in many students’ rooms, however, the light is far brighter than it should be.

★The screen

Many people think that having light letters on a dark background（背景） can cause less eyestrain, but they are wrong. In fact, it is best to have dark letters on a light background.

★Angle（角度） of looking at the computer screen

Students should sit a little higher than the computers so that they are looking down at the computer screens. The top of the monitor（显示器） should not be so high as the top of a student’s head.

★Breaks

If students spend a long time in front of a computer screen, it can cause eyestrain. Students should take a break by looking away from the screen every fifteen or twenty minutes. During that time they should either close their eyes or look at things far away.
