Last year I had a trip with my cousin, Nancy. The weather was cloudy except for one night. Nancy and I sat in the field and we felt relaxed. Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life? While many Chinese people speak putonghua, some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.

This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There’s an online library where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频) and over 5 million videos.

Scholar Zhang Hongming talked about his worries of the disappearing of dialects. “For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. One of the most exciting and interesting forms of Chinese opera is Sichuan opera. The dancers often throw their bodies around in ways you can hardly believe, and the actors can be very funny. They can also make the people who are watching afraid by blowing fire from their mouths. But one thing is very special to Sichuan opera—face-changing, or bianlian.

The actors wear specially painted masks (面具) on their faces in many different colors. This is common in Chinese opera. But what surprises you in Sichuan opera is that the actor’s face can suddenly change completely and you cannot see how this has happened! A face that was red suddenly becomes blue. A mask that was smiling suddenly becomes sad.

Some actors can change face times in twenty seconds, and yet you never see their fingers touch their face. How do they do it?
