The boys went to the kitchen and asked Tom’s mom if she would help them make some lemonade while they popped the popcorn. Tom’s mom got the lemons from the refrigerator and also a small amount of sugar. She mixed up the lemonade while the boys started popping the popcorn.
Tom and Rob got a small table from the garage and set it up near the sidewalk. They made a red sign telling everyone that popcorn and lemonade was for sale. The boys sat for about ten minutes before they got their first sale. Mrs. Jenkins, one of their neighbors, was walking her dog. “It’s so hot today.” “I sure can use a drink,” she said. Soon the boys were busy handing out popcorn to Mr. Baker. He was walking down the street sending the mail. “I need a break,” he said. “Walking all over the neighborhood gave me an appetite.”
The boys had only three popcorn bags left and enough lemonade for three more cups. “Wow, I didn’t think the popcorn and lemonade would sell that fast. We made six dollars,” said Tom. “If we get bored again before school starts, we can try selling more lemonade with cookies(饼干) next time,” laughed Rob.

Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don't all have the same coffee culture. In Europe for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past.Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks(星巴克) coffee shops spread across the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971in downtown Seattle,Washington,in the USA.It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop's business did well, and by 1981there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981.That year,Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks.Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest.Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did.In 1982,the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company's head of marketing(市场营销).
In 1983,Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso (浓咖啡) bars there caught his eyes.Back in the USA,Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and casual, and customers everywhere seemed to like it.Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA.Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well.Today, there are more than 16,000Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have closed over the past few years. On the hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area.On the other hand, stores in some countries closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the feel the same everywhere environment offered by Starbucks.

Sue and Jim were neighbors for five years but they were never interested in each other. Then one day, Sue saw Jim’s music collection. She noticed a rare punk rock CD that she also owned. At that moment, she realized that they both had the same interest in music and they started talking. Sue said, “I thought we had nothing in common(相同) until I saw his CD by the New York Dolls.” They are now married and living with each other.
Some psychologists(心理学家) think that your taste in music is related to (有联系的) your personality. As part of a test at the University of Texas, Austin, USA, volunteers created a CD of their favourite songs. The volunteers then listened to each other’s CDs and made guesses about the CD creator’s personality-outgoing, adventurous, happy, and so on. These strangers correctly guessed much more about each others’ personalities through their CDs than through their clothes or taste in films. For example, Sue and Jim love punk music, which means they have outgoing personalities.
The psychologists who did the test found Snoop Dogg(hip-hop) fans are likely to be energetic and talkative. People who like U2(rock/pop music) are generally independent and adventurous.
The psychologists also found that Louis Armstrong(jazz) fans tend to(倾向于) be shy. The psychologists were surprised to find that rap and heavy metal fans were also shier and quieter than many other music lovers.
