Last autumn I spent a week at a big hotel in London. It was one of those modern______.  Every room in it is the same size and has the same furniture(家具) looking just______every  other room. 

My room number was 311. One ______, I got back to the hotel after eating dinner with some friends. When I opened the door to my room, I saw something______. A man was pointing a gun at a woman sitting in a chair, and the______was saying in a terrible voice: “Please don’t______me!” I turned round, ran down the stairs(楼梯) — I didn’t dare to wait for the lift — and found a_____in the hall. “Quick,” I cried, “______is being killed in my room.”  

He controlled his surprise and came back with me. But when we opened the door of 311, the room was ______. 

The waiter looked at me strangely and said: “I think, sir, you had better go to____.” and left. I was too puzzled(困惑的) to say anything. I thought that I must have____too much. So I just followed his ____.

The next morning, I asked about the matter, ____the  explanation was simple. I had gone to Room 411, where a famous actor and his wife had been practicing a scene from their new ____. When I told them that it was I who had rushed into____room, they laughed and gave me a  ticket to see the play for the opening night.

Mark was eleven and often went fishing with his father. On the day before the bass（鲈鱼）season opened, he and his father were fishing in the evening.

Mark waited patiently for some time, and then he lifted a huge fish out of the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.

Mark’s father lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 p.m.—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, and then at Mark.

“You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said.

“Dad!” cried Mark.

“There will be other fish,” said his father.

“Not as big as this one,” cried Mark.

Looking around the lake, Mark saw no other fishermen or boats. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, he knew from his father’s voice that the decision could not be changed. Mark threw the huge bass into the water. He thought that he would never again see such a big fish.

That was 34 years ago. Today Mark is a successful engineer in New York City. He often takes his son to fish at the same place. And he was right. He has never again caught such a large fish as the one he got that night long ago. But he does see that same fish... again and again... every time he comes up against a question of ethics(道德规范).

Babies do it for up to eighteen hours a day. Mrs. Thatcher and Napoleon both said they only needed to do it three or four hours a night. Sleep. No one can live without it. But how much do we really need?

Research by the National Sleep Foundation in Washington says that we all need eight hours’ sleep every night. Scientists have found that people who sleep for less than six and a half hours a night are more often ill than people who sleep for eight hours. Going without sleep also increases the chance of serious illness. Workaholics who sleep for less than five hours often die young, and do less well at work.

The scientists found that, on average, adults sleep for seven hours a night, with 32% sleeping less than six hours. It also says that the idea that we need less sleep as we get older is completely untrue. “People have no idea how important sleep is to their lives,” Dr. Thomas Roth, director of the Foundation says. “Good health needs good sleep.”

“But not too much of it,” says Professor Jim Home of Loughborough University. “Sleep is like food and drink,” he believes, “You would always like to have a little bit more, but that doesn’t mean you need it.” Professor Home studied a group of people who could spend as many hours as they wanted in bed; after ten hours they didn’t find it any easier to get up. And people who sleep for more than nine hours a night die younger than people who usually sleep for seven or eight!

Milton and Fred grew up in Lwala village, in Kenya. The people there did not have much money. Most people grew food or raised animals to feed their families. The homes in the village did not have electricity or running water. And the closest hospital was a 33-kilometer walk away. Many people died from preventable diseases(疾病), because they could not get to a doctor quickly enough.

Milton and Fred’s parents were teachers. Their mother, Margaret, taught in a primary school. Their father, Erastus Ochieng, taught chemistry and biology at a secondary school. Erastus tried to help people in the village. He read medical books and dreamed of starting a medical clinic(诊所), a health center. The Ochiengs valued education. They wanted a good education for their children. They borrowed money to send Milton and Fred to a good school.   

The brothers worked hard at school. In his third year of secondary school, Milton was invited to study in the United States for a year. When the year was over, he returned to Lwala. But he applied(申请) to continue his education at Dartmouth College in the United States. He was accepted to study there. But Milton’s family could not afford an airplane ticket to the US.

People from Lwala wanted to help. They sold crops, chickens, and cows. They collected nine hundred dollars. They gave it to Milton as a gift, and asked Milton not to forget about his village. A year later, Fred joined Milton at Dartmouth. A few years later, Milton and Fred went to study at Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville.

Soon, Milton and Fried started collecting money to build the medical clinic in Lwala. On April 2, 2007 Lwala Health Clinic finally opened. Since the clinic opened, it has served over fifteen hundred patients every month. The Ochieng brothers did more than just start the clinic. They also helped form a group which works to make the lives of the village people better.

The village of Lwala invested in the brothers. And the brothers gave back. Milton believes it was important to return to help Lwala. Milton described it this way: “In Lwala village, you do not really belong to your parents. You belong to everybody.”

Mrs Green loves flowers. She has a small, beautiful garden. In summer her flowers are always the best on the    81    .

One summer afternoon, the doorbell rang,     82     when she opened the door, she saw a small boy standing outside. The boy was holding a lot of flowers in his hands.

“I’m selling flowers,” he said. “They are quite     83    . Do you want any?”

“My boy,” Mrs Green answered. “I have lots in my garden. I needn’t pay anything     84     them.”

“Oh, no, you don’t,” said the boy. “There aren’t any flowers in your garden now because they are     85     in my hands.”

John is from Australia. He is now a student in Qingdao University. He (86)     86     living in Qingdao. “Qingdao is such a beautiful city that I     87     in love with it,” he said.

It was Sunday yesterday. John went to the beach     88     himself. When he was lying on the beach, he heard someone crying for help. He jumped up quickly and saw a boy in the sea. A woman came out of her house and saw three old men sitting in her front yard.     101

One of the old men pointed to his friends and explained: “His name is Wealth,” he said and pointed to the other man: “He is Success, and I am Love.     102    ”

The woman went in and told her husband what had happened. Her husband was very happy. “How nice!” he said. “Let us invite Wealth!”

    103     “My dear, why don’t we invite Success?”

Their daughter jumped in with her idea: “Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love!”

“That’s a good idea,” said the husband to his wife. “Go out and invite Love to be our guest.”

    104     Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other two old men also got up and followed him. Surprised, the woman asked them: “I only invited Love. Why are you coming in?

The old men replied together: “If you invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would stay outside, but since you invited Love, wherever he goes, we go with him.     105    ”
