One freezing January morning，Marc Greenhall was walking his dog，Jarvis，in the park. “As I. was walking，I just saw Jarvis running onto the ice    46    the ducks in the middle，and then he fell into the water and couldn't climb out，” said Greenhall. He    47    he had no choice but to try to rescue his dog. “Someone else told me the lake was only one-meter deep，but it was at least    48    that. I had to break my way through the 6-cm ice. Finally，I got Jarvis by the neck and pulled him out. I don't think I've ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry    49    . And when we got there，everyone was asking if Jarvis was Okay-no on was particularly worried about me！”

An onlooker（旁观者），Julie Brown，46，saw it all happen. “The dog went onto a    50    lake. All of a sudden，it started to go under. There were a lot of people around，and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it，the owner was in the water forcing his way through the ice. I can imagine how cold it was. Everyone watching was very worried，but he was as    51    as a cucumber--he just crawled back out，put the dog on its lead（栓绳），and went home. ”

Do you have bright ideas？ideas for inventions that change society or，at least，make life easier for somebody？Perhaps we all do sometimes，but we don't often make the idea a reality.

Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encourages young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16, and there were eleven prize-winners altogether. Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called "Sunshine Superman". It's important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight. Neil's is more accurate and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power. You can do so much with animated cartoon. Look at Simon West's idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn't a new idea. But itis new to use these pictures on road signs. "We found that people were more likely to see moving signs," said Simon.

So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or a car falling over the edge of a cliff. Quite a caution! The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn't ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of "pupil power!"

Night after night，she came to tuck（盖被子）me in，even long after my childhood years. Following her custom for ____，she'd lean down and push my longhair out of the way，then kiss my forehead.

I don't remember when it first started annoying（使烦恼）me-her hands pushing my hair that way. Finally，one night，I______ her，"Don't do that any more-your hands are too rough！" She didn't say anything in reply. But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar expression of her love.

Time after time，with the passing years，my________returned to that night. By then I missed my mother's hands，missed her goodnight kiss on my forehead. Sometimes the incident（事情）seemed very close，sometimes far away，but always in the back of my mind.

Well，the years have passed，and I'm not a little girl anymore. Mom is in her mid-seventies and those hands I once thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family.

In my memory，for the thousandth time，I recalled the night my young voice_______， “Don't do that any more-your hands are too rough!” Catching Mom's hand in hand, I said________how sorry I was for that night. I thought she'd remember, as I did. But Mom didn't know what I was_____She had forgotten-and forgiven-long ago.

Sweden's Icehotel is the latest cool hotel in town，and it really is made of ice. So，how did this idea come about？It all started in 1990. A French artist held the opening of his exhibition in a man-made igloo（雪块砌成园顶小屋）on the f    81     Torne River-home of the Icehotel. The igloo a    82     many visitors. Among these visitors was a brave group adventures. They used the igloo as their accommodation（住处）. This act of bravery inspired the construction of the Icehotel.

Situated（位于）200 km above the Arctic Circle，the hotel is only open during winter months. Why？Because the ice starts to m    83    in spring time. This means that the hotel is built from scratch every year.

But does this hotel have any of the facilifies（设施）you find in a r    84    hotel？Well，actually，yes. In fact，the ice hotel seems to have everything: the famous “Absolute Ice-Bar”，an ice art exhibition and a cinema. It even has an ice sauna and spa to keep you warm. And，of course，you can enjoy the n    85     scenery around the hotel. There is a snowmobile travel which takes you across snowfields. And if you're feeling brave，you can drive the snowmobile y    86    .

The Icehotel is a real find. In fact，it won the “Best Experience in Sweden” award in 2017. And，it's not impossible to get to either. There are f    87    and trains every day. So，what are you waiting for？Just make sure you wrap up warm and take a sleeping bag.

When taking an elevator，do you often push the"Close"button？You hope by pushing it，the elevator door will close faster．But what if the button is actually fake（假的）？

Karen Penafiel is the executive director（执行董事）of the US'NationalElevator Industry．She said that elevators'"close"buttons are a complete trick，at least in the US，and that doors will not close any faster despite how hard you push．

In the 1990s the Americans with Disabilities Act （《美国残疾人法案》）

was passed in the US．It means all elevators have to stay open long enough to allow disabled people to enter．Only US firefighters and elevator workers can really use the buttons with special keys．

But the buttons aren't completely useless．According to psychologists（心、理学家），fake buttons can make you feel better．They give you a sense of control that can help reduce stress．That's why some other buttons in our lives are fake，too， For example，many offices in the US have fake thermostats（温控器）．People may feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace．

You were told that traffic light buttons could help make the traffic signals change faster．But they may not really work either．

However，even when people know these little"white lies"，they still push fake buttons．As long as the doors finally close，it seems worthy， John Kounios is a psychology professor at Drexel University in the US．He told The New York Times that he always pushes the traffic light buttons．"After all，I've got nothing else to do while waiting．So why not push the button on the off chance that this one will work？"
