It has long been considered one of the best companies, but do you have what it takes to work for Google?
It may take a sharp mind, as an American author says that the search engine giant (搜索引擎巨人) asks its interviewees to answer difficult question.
William Poundstone believes that he has unlocked the secret of how to succeed in an interview at Google in a new book, Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google?
Poundstone lists several of the brain teasers (脑筋急转弯) that are said to be used by Google interviewers, from “can you swim faster in water or in syrup (糖浆)?” to “how would you weigh your head?”
Poundstone told ABC News that any Google’s questions are open-ended on purpose. The interviewer’s goal is to see how the thinking process of the applicant (应聘者) works, and to test his or her creativity when solving problems. He suggests the applicant should “retell the question” in their own words, as doing so gives them time to think and makes sure that they understand what is being asked.
Some of Google’s brain teasers:
* Why are manhole covers (下水道井盖) round?
* How much toilet paper would you need to cover Texas?
* You are shrunk (缩小) to the height of a nickel (五分硬币) and thrown in a blender (搅拌机).
The blades (刀片) start moving in 60 seconds. What do you do?
* How much should you charge (开价) to wash all the windows in Seattle?
* How many times a day do a clock’s hands overlap (重叠)?

It is the year 1026, the time of the Song Dynasty. You are trained to become a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor. You are about to take your final exam. What kind of thing will you face?
During the Song Dynasty, doctors needed to show they understood meridians (经络) — paths of energy running through the body.
If you were the one to take the exam, you would be asked to show how you would treat symptoms on a life-sized model covered in wax (蜡). Under the wax, the model would be made of bronze (铜), filled with water, and covered in holes running along the meridian paths.
You would need to place an acupuncture needle (针灸用的针) into the correct part of a meridian to pass the exam. If you got it right, the needle would go straight through he hole, and water would pour out of the model. If you picked the wrong spot, the needle would hit the bronze model and you failed.
The exams wanted to make sure all young doctors knew how to treat patients hitting the same correct acupuncture points.
The first “bronze man” acupuncture model was made in 1026 by one of the great doctors named Wang Weiyi. Wang also wrote a book that was used across the country to teach how to use the model. Now you can see a copy of one of these bronze men in China’s National Museum.
34. Why was there wax on the model?A.Because the model was totally made of wax. |
B.Because wax can protect the model well. |
C.Because wax stopped test takers seeing the holes. |
D.Because the meridians of the body were covered with wax. |

If aliens are discovered one day, scientists fear their language may make it possible to understand them. But John Elliott of needs Metropolitan University in Britain has come up with a program that can figure out the structure(结构)of their language. He thinks that’s the first step in understanding what they are saying.
Dr.Elliott’s program would compare an alien language to a database(数据库)of 60 different languages in the world to look for a similar structure. He believes that even an alien language will have its own structure.Language has to be structured in a certain way, or it will be harder to use,he told New Scientist magazine.
Research had shown that it is possible to know if a signal(信号)carries a language rather than a picture or music. Dr.Elliott has gone a step further by finding a way to pick out what might be words and sentences. Because languages have different word orders, Dr.Elliott has set up a library of the sentence structures of 60 human languages.
If a message is received from outer space, it could be compared against this database. Scientist would then be able to see if ti’s similar to any human language, or a mix of the language.
However, Dr.Elliott also said that in order to translate what the aliens are actually saying, it may still be necessary to have a code book.
39. Why did Dr.Elliott come up with the program?
A.To learn more about outer space. | B.To develop a new language. |
C.To help translate the messages for aliens. | D.To compare an alien language to human languages. |
A.Coming up with a program. | B.Knowing a structure. |
C.Understanding aliens. | D.Discovering aliens. |
A.Some necessary conditions for making the program work. |
B.Dr.Elliott’s findings about different kinds of languages. |
C.Three important functions of the program. |
D.The number of sentence structures of human languages. |
A.Mix the message with 60 human languages. |
B.Translate the message and send it to the database. |
C.Pick out the sentence structure and translate it. |
D.Compare the message to the database of 60 human languages. |
A.Not all languages have their own structure. |
B.The structure of alien languages is similar to that of human languages. |
