It is the year 1026, the time of the Song Dynasty. You are trained to become a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor. You are about to take your final exam. What kind of thing will you face?
During the Song Dynasty, doctors needed to show they understood meridians (经络) — paths of energy running through the body.
If you were the one to take the exam, you would be asked to show how you would treat symptoms on a life-sized model covered in wax (蜡). Under the wax, the model would be made of bronze (铜), filled with water, and covered in holes running along the meridian paths.
You would need to place an acupuncture needle (针灸用的针) into the correct part of a meridian to pass the exam. If you got it right, the needle would go straight through he hole, and water would pour out of the model. If you picked the wrong spot, the needle would hit the bronze model and you failed.
The exams wanted to make sure all young doctors knew how to treat patients hitting the same correct acupuncture points.
The first “bronze man” acupuncture model was made in 1026 by one of the great doctors named Wang Weiyi. Wang also wrote a book that was used across the country to teach how to use the model. Now you can see a copy of one of these bronze men in China’s National Museum.

A salt seller used to carry big bags of salt on his donkey’s back as he made his way to the market every day.
On the way there, they had to cross a river. One day, the donkey took a sudden fall into the river. The big bags of salt also fell into the water. The salt seller didn’t notice, but some of the salt dissolved in the water, making the bags much lighter to carry. The donkey realized this and felt much more comfortable on his way to the market.
The next day, the donkey did the same thing, except this time, he fell in the water on purpose. Again the bags were lighter and easier to carry. The salt seller soon found out what was going on and decided to teach his donkey a lesson. The next day, he put two big bags of cotton on the donkey’s back. Again the donkey played the same trick, hoping that the bags would become even lighter. But the cotton that fell into the water instead became very heavy to carry. The donkey learned a lesson and didn’t play this trick anymore after that day.
Sometimes, we might feel tempted to take shortcuts or cheat when we have a lot of hard work to do. However, taking shortcuts and cheating will often come back to harm us later. It is better to simply work honestly.

Tasty banana are hard to turn down. They taste good and you don’t have to wash them before eating them. However, British scientists say that the fruit may disappear by 2050.
One reason for this is climate change. Scientists at the university of Exeter collected data from 27countries and areas that produce 86 percent of the world’s bananas. They found that climate change has improved growing conditions in 21 of these countries. For the past 60 years, the annual yields(年均产量)have been increasing by 1.37 tonnes(公吨)bananas per hectare.
In this way, if temperature keep rising, this advantage will disappear. Ten of the countries, including India, the world’s biggest producer of bananas. By 2050, the fruits may die out.
Shouldn’t banana plants grow more easily if it’s hotter outside? In fact, the perfect temperature for growing banana plants is between 24℃ and 32℃. If temperature get too high, they will stop growing.
Diseases are another danger to banana plants. Unlike other crops, the banana plants we grow come from shoot cutting(茎段)rather than seeds. This shows that all banana plants have the same genotype(基因型). In other words, if a disease is able to kill one plant, it could kill them all.
For example, one serious disease is called Panama. Caused by fungi in the soil, it spreads across South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. If one banana plantation(种植园)suffers from the disease, it will take 30 years until it is able to grow banana plants again. Scientists have to find a cure for this disease.

【推荐2】I’ve been working in a school for more than twenty years. Many parents often ask me, “How can you teach your child good study skills? How can he or she get the homework done as quickly as possible?” Here are some tips:
1. If the child is as young as nine or ten, ask him or her to prepare a small notebook to write down the homework given by his or her teachers. By developing this habit, he or she will learn to be much more responsible(负责的).
2. Find a good place to study. This should be a quiet place that is free from everything but study things. No games, radios, or televisions. Once you have decided on a place to study, this should be the only place where your child does his or her homework and studies. There should also be a very specific time for homework to be done. Usually, homework should be done as soon as the child gets home from school. This also goes for the kids who take part in after-school activities. Of course, it is a good idea to allow the child to have a healthy snack before the work begins.
3. Also remember, that it is the child’s duty to do his or her homework. Some children give up easily and go to Mom and Dad for help when they have a problem. Try to let them solve it first. By doing this, they will get a sense of success from overcoming problems. In this way we help them to help themselves.

Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.
The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks (轨道). The color red was used to mean “stop” because it warned people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance. Train drivers could see the red “stop” light ahead and had enough time to slow down and stop their trains. A green light was used to mean “take care” and a white light meant “go”.
However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train drivers thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant “go”. So the signals were swapped. The “go” light was changed to green and the “take care” light was changed to white.
During these times, people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and many people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely.
Today, towns and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green lights match the signals used on the railways. Yellow lights are easy to see, so they are used to warn drivers that they should slow down and prepare to stop.
