The world’s longest cross-sea bridge, the 55-km long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge(HZMB), opened on October 24. The journalist from Guardian described it as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world”.
The HZMB is unique in many ways. It is designed to have a service life of 120 years, 20 years longer than most of bridges.
And it's not just a bridge, but also part tunnel(隧道)and part island. In one section, the bridge turns into a 6.7km undersea tunnel that passes through two man-made islands. The tunnel is the world’s longest undersea tunnel for road traffic, allowing larger ships to continue passing through the sea area above the tunnel.
The bridge’s engineer had to consider many environmental factors in order to protect the surrounding environment while building the bridge. For example, they care much about the Chinese white dolphins. They are living in this sea area and are now in danger.
The HZMB will make it much more convenient to travel between the three areas it connects. It will cut down the travel time from Hong Kong to Zhuhai from four hours to about 45 minutes. The bridge will work well in the area’s development. It is expected to drive the economic (经济)development of Hong Kong, Macao and nine Guangdong cities.

Have you ever worried about your safety in your daily life? A survey shows that nearly 50% of the students interviewed are worried about robbery(抢劫)on the way to and from school. Luckily, in some big cities in China, schools are teaching a special lesson: self-protection. Students enjoy the lesson because they can learn how to help others and know how to stop danger before it happens. What’s more, they can try acting in class.
Self-protection experts are invited to give middle school students some advice on how to deal with danger.
If you are robbed
First of all, keep calm. If you are unable to shout for help or run away, give your money to the robbers. Do not say too much to irritate them. Try to remember what the robbers look like and tell the police later.
If you are in a traffic accident
If you are hit by a car, try to take a picture of the number plate(车牌)or remember the car number. If a bicycle hits you, you should call your parents before you let the rider leave. This is because you have no idea how seriously you get hurt.
If it is raining hard and there is lightening(闪电)
Don’t make phone calls outside. Don’t stay in high places or hide under trees.
If someone is drowning(溺水)
Don’t get into the water if you can’t swim. You can cry out for help or call the police.
You should keep in mind that danger could be much closer than you think. Remember to take care of yourself at all times.

Terrafugia Inc. said that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car next year. The flying car named the Transition has two seats, four wheels and wings that can be folded, so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach about 70 miles every hour on the road and 115 miles in the air. It burns around 23 gallons(加仑)of gas every hour in the air.
_________ Around 500 people have already prepaid(预付)$10,000 for getting a Transition when they go on sale. It’s reported that more and more people would like to have one, after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public at the New York Auto Show. But it may be impossible to show up on too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279,000 each. And it won’t help if you’re in a heavy traffic. The car needs a runway.
Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s. According to Robert Mann, an airline scientist, Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the car really fly in the sky.
The government has already agreed the company to use special materials to make it easier for the car to fly. The Transition is now going through tests to make sure it is safe.
Terrafugia says an owner would need to pass a test and complete 20 hours of flying time to be able to fly the Transition, the airline pilots would find it easy to control the car.

At the age of 12, seeing my grandfather coming into the sitting room and sit down, I said to my brother, “I hope he doesn’t sit down.”
My grandfather wrote poems on great rolls of thin white paper with a paintbrush(毛笔), but over the years I wouldn’t listen to him read his poems. I would leave my Chinese poor as it was, which made listening to him too much of an effort.
On Mondays, he’d sit at Dragon Boat Restaurant with other old Chinese men. While from Tuesdays to Fridays, he was at a small square table by himself with a pot of tea and the Chinese newspaper. Life seemed easy and peaceful for him before he got brain cancer(癌症)and three months later, he died.
I was never particularly kind to my grandfather. At the funeral(葬礼), my heart was filled with a sense of regret rather than sadness. I didn’t even show my grandfather the commonest kindness he was supposed to receive. I was 16 years old then.
Now I am 26. A few weeks ago, during a family dinner at a Chinese restaurant, the waiter talked with my mum about my speaking to him in Chinese, wishing that his own kids could speak a little Chinese as I did. Mom told him I had stopped speaking Chinese for some years and then had suddenly started up again in my late teens.
I have often wondered if my mum knows that my improvement in Chinese had to do with Granddad’s death. Whenever I am stuck for a word, I ask her. Whenever I am with her, or relatives, I practice. Now I am confident that the next time an elderly relative wants me to listen to them, I am not only willing, but also I am able to. In fact, the more I learn, the more interest I have in the fantastic Chinese culture. For me, the learning process is like a journey to rediscover my roots(根).

It was Sunday again. Paula and Emily disliked Sundays. That was one of the many things the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same way. In fact, it was sometimes hard for their teachers and classmates to tell the differences between them.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Sunday to prepare for their lessons. Paula had to attend the art class and Emily had to attend her dancing class. Both of them had learned their own classes for three years. “How I wish I could do something different today!” said the twins with one voice. All at once, a wonderful plan came to Paula and Emily at the same time. After giving each other a description(描述)of their own teachers and classmates, Paula put on Emily’s dancing dress while Emily put Paula’s things for painting into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art class started, Emily felt lost. Unlike Paula, Emily was poor at drawing. When the art class finally ended, Emily didn’t dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Paula was struggling(挣扎)in the dancing class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept walking into them. Their dancing teacher became a little bit angry with her, “Emily, you should remember the steps. You can’t depend on copying what others are doing.”
When Emily and Paula got home, they were tired out. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that “the grass was not always greener on the other side of the fence (篱笆)”.
45. Did Paula and Emily like Sundays?46. What time did they have to get up to prepare for their lessons every Sunday?
47. Why did the twins do badly in the classes that day?
48. Do you want to have a chance to exchange(交换)life with others? Why or why not?
