Here is a real-life story of The Tortoise and the Hare 《龟兔赛跑》 .
Every year in Australia, the strongest long-distance runners race more than 500 miles from Sydney to Melbourne. The race takes more than five days to complete. It attracts world-class athletes-the kind who become spokespeople for sneakers and sports drinks.
In 1983, however, as the competitors lined up to race, they were joined by a 61-year-old farmer wearing overalls and work boots. His name was Cliff Young. The other runners mistook him for a spectator (观众) . He explained that on his family's sheep farm, he often had to round up 2,000 or so animals by himself. "Sometimes I had to run after those sheep for two or three days. I believe I can run this race." he said.
When the race began, the younger runners flew past Cliff. Instead of running after them,Cliff shuffled ( 拖着脚走) along in an unusual way. The other runners and the spectators thought he would never finish the race. But something happened. When all the other runners took a break to sleep, Cliff kept running. The other runners caught up to him each morning, but finally Cliff was too far ahead to be passed. On the fifth day, he left all of the young, world-class athletes behind. He was the first competitor to cross the finish line and he set a new course record.
Cliff received$ 10, 000 for winning the race. He said he did not realize there would be prize money, and he gave the funds to his fellow runners. Doing this made him a hero in Australia. Since then, many runners have used his shuffling stride. No one sleeps during the race anymore, either. The farmer changed long-distance racing and proved that age and style aren't everything.

Have you noticed the waste bins in different colors on the street? Do you often put all the waste in the same bin? It’s reported by Changchun Daily that people must do waste sorting(分类) in most places in Changchun at the end of 2019. Waste sorting is a wonderful way to make good use of energy and protect the environment. But do you know how to sort the waste?
Usually, people should sort their waste into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Different kinds of waste should go into different bins. Wet waste means the things you don’t want but pigs can eat, mostly coming from your kitchen. Things that can be used again, such as paper, metal and glass, are recyclable waste. Harmful waste might be dangerous or cause serious pollution, like medicine and batteries(电池). And any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go into the dry waste bin.
Different countries are trying different methods to sort the waste. A university in England has invented a smart bin. When people drop their waste into the bin. It can tell what kind of waste it is and sort it correctly. The bin can also compress the waste to make it smaller in size and take up less space. In South Korea, people have to separate their food waste from other kinds of waste and pay for it. The more food waste they throw away, the more they pay. Japan has the strictest rules for waste sorting in the world. For example, plastic bottles and their caps should go into different bins.
38. When must people do waste sorting in most places in Changchun?A.At the beginning of 2018. | B.At the end of 2018. |

Bees have very small brains. Still, they are very intelligent. Scientists at Queen Mary University of London did an experiment with bees. It shows that bees can learn something new to gain a reward(奖励). Then they can teach other bees to do the same. And that’s not all they can do. Olli Loukola was one of the scientists who worked on the study. He said that the bees did not just copy what they saw. They actually improved on what they were learning. “This is of course amazing for small-brained insects,” he said. He added that it is even harder for humans to improve on something they learned by copying others.
For the experiment, the bees had to move a yellow ball into the center of a platform( 平 台 ). First, the scientists showed the bees how to do it. When the ball got to the center, the scientists added sugar water to reward the subjects. The bees learned that the rewards came when the ball was put in the right place. They got better and better at moving the balls. Then, they got more of the reward. After a while, they began to move the balls by themselves.
Then scientists tried something else. They put the trained bees on a platform with bees that were not trained. After watching the trained bees once, the untrained bees learned how to do it too. They didn’t just copy the behavior, though. The new bees also improved on the action; They chose balls closer to themselves. All brains-in bees and people have neurons(神经元). The neurons let you think. Scientist Reese Halter says bees are “highly intelligent creatures,” even though they have far fewer neurons than humans. Halter explained that bees talk to each other with their bodies, but not like what we do. They use their bodies instead of words. They butt heads, bump into each other and they even dance. Loukola said scientists used to think that the smaller the brain, the less intelligent the animal. But this study proves(证明) that is not true.

Joe was an old man. The 75-year-old lived very happily in a village and had a beautiful family. Joe had four grandchildren, and they visited him during their holidays.
During one vacation, Joe was preparing his home for the kids: cleaning and buying their favorite foods. After he finished working, he realized he lost his favourite watch. The watch was a gift from his wife when their first child was born. (A) Joe treasured the watch very much, especially after his wife’s death. He was very upset about losing it.

One granddaughter asked: “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before it went missing?”
“I guess when I was cleaning the barn(谷仓)!” Joe replied.
The children looked for (B)more than two hours with Joe, but they could not find it. The kids were now also sad, but they tried to comfort(安慰) their grandfather.
One grandson went back to the barn to search again. Joe asked why he was going there a second time. But the little boy just asked the others not to follow him and to remain silent.
He was there for about fifteen minutes and then rushed to his grandfather. He found the watch and happily gave it to Joe.
Joe was surprised and asked how he was able to find it. The little boy replied: “I sat there without making a noise, and the barn was so silent. After a few minutes, I heard the ‘tick, tick’ sound and found the watch.”
