Your third year of middle school was probably a hard and busy time. You may have had trouble getting enough sleep. We all know that not getting enough sleep is not good for our health. But it has been found that less sleep could even cause you to have fewer friends, the Guardian reported.
According to researchers from the University of California, people who don’t get enough sleep are less willing to socialize with others. They are simply too tired to go out.
The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who had just had a good night’s sleep — as well as tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants (参与者) watched videos of people with neutral (中性的) expressions walking toward them. When the person on the video got too “close” to them, they pushed a button to stop the video, which recorded how close they allowed the person to get.
The results showed that the participants kept the person at a distance of 60 percent further back if they hadn’t got enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being taken up. But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
According to lead researcher Mathew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with others. In turn, other people may think you are strange and stay away from you. This can make you feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less. It becomes a vicious cycle (恶性循环).
So if you want to be a more sociable and popular person, sleeping well might help. “One night of good sleep makes you feel more active and socially confident,” said Mathew Walker.

Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day Tom told Huck about his idea.
“Where can we look for treasure?” asked Huck.
“It’s hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted (闹鬼的) houses.”
So, one Saturday afternoon Tom and his friend went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place, which made the boys feel very frightened. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.
“What is it?” whispered Huck, going white with fear.
“Keep quiet! There’s someone downstairs.”
The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard in a wide sombrero hat and the other was dirty and unpleasant-looking.
Tom and Huck shook with fear when they heard the Spaniard speak because they found it was Indian Joe. He said.
“It’s time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the $650 from the robbery?”
“Let’s keep $30 each and leave the bag here.”
The dirty man went to the fireplace and moved a stone. Then he lifted out a bag full of money and took out some coins. The two boys forgot all their fears when they saw there was real treasure downstairs. Then Indian Joe started digging a hole with his knife and the knife hit something.
“What is it?” asked the other man.
“It’s a box,” said Indian Joe. And he put in his hand and pulled out a handful of gold coins. The other man found the boys’ tools, and they soon pulled out the box.
“There’s thousands of dollars in there,” said Indian Joe.
“The Murrell Gang used this area one summer,” said his partner.
“They must have hidden their money here.”
“What will we do with this, Joe? Will we bury (埋) it again?”
“No, someone might find it,” said Indian Joe. “Let’s bury it in the number two den.”
Tom and Huck got up as soon as the two men left. They decided to watch out for the “man in the sombrero” when he came to town and find out where the number two den was.

Thousands of years ago, Chinese poet QuYuan (about 340-278BC) wrote the poem Tianwen, meaning Quest for Heavenly Truth. He came up with a series of questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the world around us. The poem showed his doubts about traditional ideas and the spirit of finding the truth.
China has named its upcoming series of planetary exploration missions (任务) after the poem. The first one in the series – a Mars exploration mission – has been named Tianwen1, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on April 24, China Space Day. This shows China’s desire to explore the universe and discover its secrets.
As early as 1970, China launched (发射) its first man-made Earth satellite, becoming the fifth country in the world to launch a man-made satellite on her own. Since 2003, China has carried out six Shenzhou manned missions and launched two space labs into Earth’s orbit (轨道). China’s moon exploration missions – the Chang’e series – started in 2007. In December 2018, China became the first country to send the probe (探测器) Chang’e 4 to the moon’s far side, which always faces away from Earth.
The Tianwen series will follow the Shenzhou and Chang’e series and move further into space. The first step is to launch a Mars probe this year, which will mark the start of China’s exploration of the Red Planet. The probe is expected to orbit, land on and explore Mars in one mission. If it succeeds, it will be the first to complete all of these tasks in one mission. The Long March 5 rockets will send the probe to Mars. It will take seven months to reach the planet and land.
After this mission, China plans to visit Mars again in 2028, aiming to collect soil from the surface of the planet and bring it back to Earth. Around 2030, China will explore Jupiter and several asteroids (小行星), said CNSA.
