When my brother and I were children, we spent few weeks in the countryside with our uncle. He was geologist（地质学家）and loved to go on walks to ______ stones. One day, he bought us ______ and asked us to go to the mountain with him and carry the stones.

Christa's Unusual Collection

Many people like to collect things. Some collect stamps, some collect dolls and some collect rocks. Christa Behmenburg, from Germany, collects something unusual-mouse-related items.

Christa’s’ husband is geologist（地质学家）. He likes collecting postcards about mineral resources（矿物资源）. Christa always goes with him to fairs（展销会）to get new cards for his collection.

However, Christa is not interested in mineral resources. She often feels bored at these fairs. One day, she asked her husband if she could also build up a collection of something she likes. Her husband agreed. He advised Christa to collect something about her favorite animal. That piece of advice, however, would become his biggest regret ever.

Christa's favorite animal is the mouse. She has had mice as pets since she was a teenager. The woman considers the animal lovely and clever. Two or three years after she started her collection, she went all in. Soon, she had hundreds and then thousands of mouse-related items.

At first, she and her husband only had a small flat. Because of Christa's collection, however, space was getting tighter and tighter. The two rented the apartment next door. By 2014, Christa had had 47,398 mouse-related items. That year, she broke the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of mouse-related items.

Christa's collection continues to grow. Now, every room in her house, from the kitchen to the bathroom, is filled with mouse-related items. Sometimes, Christa's husband complains about the large collection. Christa, however, will remind him that it was all his idea!

What covers three-fourths of the Earth's surface? It's the water that makes up the Earth's four oceans. They are the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian and the Arctic. The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest. The Arctic is the smallest and shallowest.

Stand on a beach and watch the ocean. You will see that it is never still（平静的）. The ocean is in constant motion（频繁的运动）. Wind blows across the surface of the water. This makes waves. Ocean waves vary in height. Light wind causes little ripples（涟漪）. In a hurricane（飓风）, winds can whip up（吹起） huge, dangerous waves that can get to be more than 14 meters high!

Ocean currents（水流）are masses of water that move from shore to shore. Like waves, currents are caused by wind. Ocean currents can be warm or cold. In areas close to land, warm ocean currents make the air warmer; cold ocean currents make it colder.

At high tide（涨潮时期）, the ocean covers much of the beach, At low tide, you can walk on the sand that had earlier been covered by ocean water. Tides are caused by the pull of gravity（重力）as the moon circles the Earth.

The ocean provides people with many resources. Ocean water contains salt, a basic cooking material. Ocean fishing provides work and food for many people. The ocean is also a fun place to visit. Children who live near the ocean often like to swim in the waves, hunt for shells, and play in the sand. The ocean may look like a great pool of water, but it's much more than that.
