When I was told to play for a drama competition, I became nervous. I had never done anything like this before. But after reading Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, I was excited about what was to come. The story was great and sentences were so funny. I wanted to give it a go .
I was playing Sir Toby Belch, a very funny old knight (骑士) . I had to remember a lot of sentences and very funny old words. I worked hard in order to act well, like a real knight from the old days. But the most difficult job was to be funny in all my acting. This is quite different from the way I am in real life.
"OK. It's time to be a different me now!" I said to myself. At first, I couldn't do anything naturally. I don't know what to do when acting in this silly way. But I always told myself that I was Sir Toby now and I should forget who I really was. Even when I was in the bath, I was thinking about Sir Toby’s words and actions and trying to do everything like Sir Toby did.
The competition day finally came. When it was my turn to perform, I took a deep breath and began my part. I tried hard to make my words clear enough to be understood and my actions funny enough to make everybody laugh. When the results were finally read out, I immediately knew we had won first prize. I made it.
From this experience, I've come to know that I can be a different person. It doesn't mean I've changed my personality, but I can do something I had never imagined possible.
26. Why did the author feel nervous?A.Because he didn't like the activity. |
B.Because he had to play in a drama competition. |
C.Because he had to learn Twelfth Night. |
D.Because he wanted to do everything well. |
A.let it go away | B.give a hand |
C.have a try | D.go to a place |
A.playing Sir Toby Belch |

On March 14 in 2018, one of science's brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.
Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory that the universe began with the Big Bang and will end in black holes.
His theory became the important base for a lot of later research. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time (《时间简史》), which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN.
Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong will and positive attitude.
When Hawking was 21, he was told that he had a serious illness that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and "speak" using a computerized voice. But this didn't stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. "If one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically disabled as well." he once said.
Hawking travelled around the world to attend science meeting, visiting every continent, including Antarctica. He was also a fan of popular culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory.
He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon. When he was 65, he took part in a zero-gravity flight to experience weightlessness. He hoped to travel into space one day.
In 2013, Hawking spoke about how he felt life was unfair when he first knew his illness. "But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly satisfied with my life," he said peacefully.
31. When was Hawking born?A.In 1942. | B.In 1952. | C.In 1962. | D.In 1921. |
A.He thought the book would be very popular. |

Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to believe or what to do. According to a report on the World Economic Forum (2016), critical thinking, creativity, and their practical application are widely accepted as the top three skills that young people need to have in their future career.
A good critical thinker usually takes the following steps before he decides what to do. Whenever he needs to do something, he would, first of all, reason. He checks why he needs to do it and whether he really needs to do it. Then, analyze. He tries to find out what it really is and the best way to do it. After that, evaluate. He makes sure whether he is able to do it and how to do it well. Finally, he makes the decision and takes action. Take the "Double 11" (a popular online shopping day in China) as an example. A few days before it, he checks carefully what he needs and whether he really needs them, and makes a shopping list. He goes to the online shops to compare the quality and the prices of the things that he is going to buy. He compares the shops that sell these things. Then he checks whether he can afford them and in which shops he is going to buy them. Although it takes him some time to make the decisions, he would not regret after the shopping.
Then what would happen if he didn't think critically before he made the decisions? After the crazy "Double 11", there were usually a lot of complaints on the Internet. There were regrets about buying more things than they needed. There were complaints about the poor quality and the prices of the things they bought. There were also complaints because they received wrong things or simply received nothing. There were all kinds of regrets and complaints. Why so? They had not thought critically before they made the decisions.
Critical thinking helps you make wiser decisions. It helps you avoid wasting time, money and so on. Therefore, do look before you leap.
