I have ten close friends I have grown up and played with. People do not know for sure when I've played together, but every Friday night they watch our football games.

In the first year of college, we played together on our own team and always watched the seniors (大四学生) playing on the school team. I ______ what made them so passionate (充满激情的). Later I understood they were playing football just because of their simple ______ for the game. Soon I began to apply (应用) the ______ to my everyday life. I have seen what it takes to succeed-devotion, confidence and courage.

Many ordinary people ranging from volunteers to media workers have devoted themselves to fighting the novel coronavirus. They prove that ordinary people can still do their part during difficult times.

On Feb 12, Dalian(not his real name) was taking a train to Changsha, Hunan, for a business trip. While on the train, he went into a carriage(车厢) to have lunch and chose to remain in the carriage. He did not realize that the carriage was only for people heading to Wuhan.

Several hours later, when the train arrived in Wuhan, Dalian was asked to get off, as he was in the special carriage. Although he was surprised, he didn't want to cause trouble and got off the carriage with just a single bag.

As Wuhan had been locked down because of the epidemic, Dalian couldn't find a hotel to stay in. Feeling at a loss, he saw a notice online looking for volunteers to work in hospitals. The payment was 500 yuan a day. Dalian decided to give it a try.

He soon became a volunteer at Wuhan No 1 Hospital. He was responsible for taking out trash, mopping(拖) the floor, disinfecting(消毒) the hospital, dealing with used protective suits and bringing meals to patients.

The young man, reportedly from northeast China, had to work 12 hours every day, changing his protective suit three times a day. While working, he couldn't drink anything or go to the bathroom. He also had to have close contact with infected patients, which is risky.

Dalian was afraid of getting infected at first. "When I entered the wards(病房), I was afraid and felt like I couldn't move," he said. But after seeing more patients get better, his fear gradually went away.

Dalian's story has since become popular online. People were surprised by his experience, but also described him as having "a heart of gold".

President Xi sent a message on September 29, 2019 to the Chinese women's volleyball team, after they won the World Cup. The Chinese team has successfully defended (卫冕) its World Cup crown with 11 straight victories, winning great honors for the country and the Chinese people, said Xi. The players didn't fear any competitors and fought hard with both style and skills, showing great teamwork and a hardworking spirit.

Back in 1976, Yuan Weimin served as the coach of the Chinese women's volleyball team. Under his guidance, in 1979, China won the Asian women's volleyball championship. During the 1980s, the Chinese team achieved five straight championships in the world, especially in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. That was the first time in Chinese history. At that time, China was having a hard period in its own development. The achievements those Chinese volleyball players had made and their spirit were quite an encouragement for Chinese people to work hard and get out of the darkness.

Chen Zhonghe was the chief coach of the Chinese women's volleyball team at the beginning of the 21st century. August 28th 2004 was an unforgettable day for all the Chinese volleyball fans and even almost all the Chinese. When the whole world thought that China was going to be defeated (击败) as Russia took the big lead first, Chinese athletes kept good mental states and in the end unbelievably won the Olympic gold medal. The Chinese team impressed the Chinese and the world with that match, inside of which was the strong spirit of the team.

In 2013, Lang Ping, worked as the chief coach again after 10 years. In the next 3 years, China step by step got back to the world women's volleyball stage. In the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the Chinese team gained back its Olympic gold medal again after 12 years. "Never give up, especially in adversity (逆境). I think that's what the spirit of Chinese women's volleyball means," Lang said in Rio 2016.

Over the past forty years, our Chinese women's volleyball players have overcome difficulties. And the spirit they showed has been considered as "the fighting spirit of Chinese women's volleyball team and praised by the whole country.

Digital technology (数字技术) has made life easier for most people. With a smartphone in a band, people can shop online, watch TV shows and arrange a taxi.

Zhu Yiwei, 17, from Anhui province, bought his grandfather a new phone as a gift. But his grandfather still uses the phone just for calling and messaging. He said other functions make him puzzled," said Zhu.

This is a common problem faced by the elderly in the digital age. The elderly mainly use technology to communicate and get information, according to a survey by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Other services are still strange to them. That's why elderly people are sometimes called "digital refugees (难民)".

For example, since the COVID-19 pandemic, people are often asked to show a green health code on their phone to get into public places. But most elderly people don't use smartphones. Even if they have one, many don't know how to operate it, People's Daily noted. "We have done a lot to society all our life, but now we feel left far behind by it," a 75-year-old Beijinger, Bai, told the Global Times.

For the elderly, one way of using digital technology is to learn from younger family members. However, not all of these younger people have the patience or time to teach the elderly. Besides, aging results in many physical problems, such as weak eyesight and bad memory. This makes it harder to use smartphones.

In Sweden, Finland and Norway, people are generally very healthy. Their diet is good and they have a healthy lifestyle.     33     It is called SAD, which stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder.

In these northern countries, the summer days have 23 hours of sunlight and in the winter, the nights are 23 hours long. During the winter season, some people become very sad. Doctors have discovered that the sadness that these people suffer because they do not get enough sunlight.     34     People with this condition wear a special hat, the hat has a light in it which is very similar to sunlight. By wearing this hat, people can feel happy all winter.

Perhaps the opposite of this is wearing sunglasses. Many people feel more relaxed if they wear sunglasses.     35     Or it might be because they think they look cool in sunglasses. Plus, people who wear sunglasses can look at other people without anyone knowing!

    36     Whale songs are very popular because of the soft voices and calm rhythms and so are the sounds of waterfalls and bird songs.

Sound also affects people's mood and health. Medical studies have shown that certain kinds of music, such as gentle classical music, can lower people's blood pressure and heart rate. This is important for people who have heart problems. Of course, the opposite of this can be true.     37    

Isn't it amazing that so many things can change our mood and health?

This is an open letter. I want to apologize to all the people I have made trouble for over the last year. What I did was wrong. I am so sorry. It was easy to pick on smaller children because I am big for my age. At first, I just want to make sure no one else would give me trouble, so I acted tough(粗暴). But then it seemed so easy to control other people just by using my strength.

I cannot make any excuses for my behavior but I can tell everyone about how I became a bully. I want other bullies to read my letter and realize that they can stop hurting other people too. The first thing you should all know about me is that in my family, all the men are very tough. My dad is a policeman. And my uncles are all fireman or soldiers. They all expect me to act tough as well. It is very hard to show any kindness when all the people who you look up to tell you that being kind is weak. Sometimes I just want to talk to my dad, but he can be quite cold. I love him and I think he loves me. But there is always a distance between us. Perhaps I have not learned how to build a relationship with other people yet, because no one has ever taught me how.

I want to change. And I hope this letter is the second step of my new life. The first step was finding out how many people I had hurt because of my behavior. I only recently found out how badly I was behaving. One day the smallest boy at school was brave enough to tell me that he wasn't scared of me and that he wanted to help me. This is also a letter to him to thank him.
