Andrea stopped the car. When the old lady got in, Andrea could see that she was not that little. She was in a long dress and had a hat pulled down low over her eyes. She put her big brown shopping bag down onto the floor.

“Do you live in Brockboune?” asked Andrea, “No, Dear,” answered the old lady in a low voice. “I’m just going to visit a friend, but my car won’t start, so I decided to hitchhike.”

Something in the way the lady spoke made Andrea uneasy. Andrea secretly studied the half-covered face, the shapeless body, the arms with their thick black hairs…Thick black hairs? Andrea’s blood froze. This wasn’t a woman. It was a man!

Her heart was beating wildly and her mind raced. Then suddenly, an idea came up to her. She stopped the car in a sudden. “A child!” she shouted. “Did you see the child? I think I hit her!” I didn’t see anything,” the “old lady” said. “I don’t think you hit anything.” “I’m sure it was a child!” shouted Andrea. “Could you just get out and have a look?” The “old lady” slowly opened the car door, leaving “her” bag inside. As soon as “she” was out of the car,     Andrea drove away as soon as possible.

Several minutes later, Andrea thought about the “old lady’s” bag and opened it carefully. There was only one thing in it—a shining knife.

Rupert Isaacson was born in Africa, and grew up in London and in the English countryside, where he discovered his love for horses. Because he grew up hearing so many fascinating memories about Africa from his parents, he went there and lived with the people called the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert.

By the year 2000, Rupert was already working as a reporter, writing articles and guidebooks about Africa and India. He met his wife Kristin in India. Today, they live with their son, Rowan, in the US. But Rupert faced the greatest challenge of his life when, at the age of two, Rowan was diagnosed(诊断) with an illness that influenced his ability to communicate with others.

Rupert discovered that spending time with horses and riding them was helping Rowan. But unluckily, the Bushmen of the Kalahari do not have horses. So the family set out for Mongolia, where horses have been important for long. Rupert has written about this journey to help his son in his book The Horse Boy, and he has produced a documentary of the same name. In the film, people have the chances to see the family traveling in Mongolia, riding horses and meeting healers(治疗师) in order to help Rowan.

Because working with horses has helped Rowan, Rupert set up the Horse Boy Foundation on his farm in Texas. It is a school that teaches people how to use horses for healing. Besides writing another book, The Long Ride Home, about traveling with Rowan to Africa, Australia and Ari-zona in the US, Rupert has also produced the documentary Endangerous, with Rowan as host, about dangerous animals that are endangered. Rupert Isaacson has managed to discover the secret of turning one challenge into many achievements.

Summer is here. One of the best ways to cool off on a hot summer day is to jump into a swimming pool. Swimming is great exercise, and a trip to a pool or beach is a good way to have fun with friends.  Swim only in areas set for swimming.

Don’t swim unless there is a lifeguard(救生员) on duty. If you’re on a beach near the ocean, this is especially important. In some places, fast currents(急流) can sweep swimmers away without warning. So if a sign says “No swimming”, please take care.

Be careful when diving(跳水) into the water headfirst.

Most pools have deep ends where diving is safe. In natural water, don’t dive unless you know that the water is deep enough. Or you could hit your head on the bottom.

Make sure you have a partner with you.

Nobody knows what will happen while you are swimming. lf something goes wrong, you can get help from that person as soon as possible. In this situation, a few seconds can make a big difference.

Pay close attention to children’s safety.

Kids who don’t know how to swim should wear life jackets. But by themselves they are not enough, so an adult should always be present. If you have a pool at home, put a fence(围栏) around it in case children fall in. And if a child disappears, check the pool first.
