When throwing away trash, do you know which bin it should go in? Some of you might not be able to answer this question. But it’s very important to know how to deal with your waste. Not knowing how to deal with waste is harder to save energy and protect the environment.
If you don’t deal with your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill(垃圾场)and be buried ( 埋 ) together. These landfills can taken up large areas of ground. The electronic waste you throw away can pollute the soil and groundwater. Other pieces of garbage can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.
Now, many cities in China have taken actions in recent years. For example, Shanghai announced in July that they will divided the garbage into four groups: recyclable, harmful, wet, and dry.
Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste.
Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs( 荧光灯泡 ). these things are not recyclable.
Wet waste is also known as household waste. “They are things that you don’t want but pigs can eat,” Guangzhou daily explained.
Some waste such as plastic bags, beer bottles and other man-made things will go in the “dry waste” bin.
Many other Chinese cities, including Shenzhen, Guangdong plan to use this way to deal with their garbage. Let’s encourage each other to deal with our waste well by sorting it to protect the environment.

The Guardian changed its wording, using “global heating” instead of “global warming” after scientists found that Earth’s temperature might rise between 2.5 ℃ and 4.5 ℃. There had been a goal to keep the rise within 2 ℃.
It’s true that “global heating” is—in terms of language—a simple phrase. But it sends out plenty of messages. With “global warming”, we’re still inside our comfort zone of handling the situation, while entering the state of “global heating” is like heading to a point where the nature is disturbed so much that there is no turning back. Everything will be changing: Coral(珊瑚)will die, polar bears will lose their living places completely, and bad weathers like droughts and heavy storms will happen more often. Decades ago, the impacts(影响)could be seen as a problem for future generations, but now it’s definitely our issue(问题). There is no doubt that we’re entering a state of “climate emergency”.
However, knowing these messages is far from enough. It depends on each and every one of us to find a solution—if there are any solutions left to find. “We have no time to waste,” said the UK’s Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. He suggested that we should take rapid action now.
Indeed, language matters. But action matters even more.

To study the garbage, the students had to travel to landfills (填埋场) , the places where cities bury (填埋) their garbage. While the students were studying the garbage, they wore special clothes. Students were very careful when they opened bags of garbage.
One important thing the students have learned from studying the garbage is that the garbage in landfills disappears very slowly. That was surprising to both the students and many scientists who had thought that about 70 % of the garbage in landfills would disappear quickly. Even in cities where it rains a lot, the students found newspapers from 1948, 40-year-old hot dogs, and vegetables from 1970. And the students also found many more empty bottles of cola than they expected.
How to dispose of our garbage well depends on what kind of garbage it is: regular(普通的) garbage, dangerous materials, or recyclable materials, such as newspapers and glass bottles. Regular garbage goes to regular landfills. Dangerous materials are harmful to people’s health and the environment. They shouldn’t go into regular landfills.
Homes are full of dangerous waste. One kind of the dangerous waste in homes is batteries. When batteries are buried directly(直接地)in a landfill, they often break open. The poison inside them moves through rain water to the bottom of the landfill. Then it can pollute the natural water in the ground.
Another dangerous waste from homes is motor oil. When people pour old motor oil on the ground or throw it in the garbage, it pollutes the environment.
Our garbage problem is not new, but as the world’s population continues to grow, it will become a bigger and bigger problem.

But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers eat unhealthily. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent survey conducted among 2,000 students at one school, scientists found that over two-thirds of the students didn't follow a healthy diet. They didn’t like vegetables, and many of them didn’t like to eat fruits. They preferred to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children’s diet. Some doctors give the following advice:
Teenagers shouldn’t eat too much junk food.
Teenagers shouldn’t eat food with too much salt. Salt can cause high blood pressure in the future.

This giant insect can be used as a toy. A child ties one end of a string to a stick and the other end around the "neck" of an insect. Holding the stick, the child lets the insect go. With a loud whirring sound, the insect takes off, pulling the string in a large curve over the child's head. The child laughs as the stick jumps around. The child is African, and the toy is the African Goliath beetle, the largest insect in the world.
The Goliath is a true insect because it has six legs and a body that is divided into three parts. Like all beetles, it has two pairs of wings. The front pair are thick and stiff and protect the back pair, which are soft. It is these soft back wings that make the beetle fly forward. They also cause the loud whirring sound the beetle makes when it flies. To steer, the beetle twists and turns its legs the same way you steer a bike by turning its front wheel.
African children often use the Goliath beetle as a toy. Although it is over 15 centimeters long, it is quite harmless.

Leaves are the world's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take CO2from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2into glucose(葡萄糖), a kind of sugar. Plants use it as food for energy and growing.
A chemical called“chlorophyll(叶绿素)”in the leaves gives plants their green color. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees“know”it's time to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their foodmaking factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves.
The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples(枫树), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red color. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during autumn.

Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. It's possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from New York University.
"It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness," said the study's chief researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study, Cohen's interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers about were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.
The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illness are less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease. So if you are worried about your health, look on the bright side more often.

【推荐3】On Oct. 25 this year, the Healthy China Action (2019-2030): Tobacco Control Promotion Campaign(控烟行动) came out in Beijing. It shows about 9.4 million junior high school students tried tobaccos(烟)before.
How did this happen? First of all, stopping smoking in public(公共) places is difficult. It’s easy for teenagers to buy tobaccos on streets. And it’s hard to find out who is smoking in a place full of people. And how to punish(惩处) them is a question. It will use much money to make people ask others not to smoke in public places. So, some units(部门) just have to let it go.
There’s another reason we should know. Although we can’t find tobacco ads(广告) on TV or newspapers, there are many other ways for teenagers to see tobaccos. Today we can see actors and actresses smoking in the movies and soap operas. Also, pictures of singers and actors smoking are everywhere on the Internet. As a result, 13% of the students in the schools of Beijing think smoking makes them look cooler. “Did you see Chow Yun Fat in the movie God of Gamblers(赌神)? Smoking makes him so manly and cool! If I can smoke, I’ll look fantastic, too.” said a 13-year-old boy student.
How can we make things better? First of all, stars shouldn’t smoke in their programs too often. And news about stars and singers smoking should also become less. The less teenagers see their favorite stars smoke, the less they want to smoke themselves. Schools and families must take actions, too. Teachers and parents mustn’t smoke in front of the students or kids. And we should let teenagers know the bad things about tobaccos. We can also have people share ideas about tobacco control in schools, so students can join the action.
