The capital of the UK is one of my favorite cities in the world. I started my London travel with a visit to the Tower of London. It is home to the English Crown Jewels. I arrived when the tower opened. It was about 9 a.m. There was a lot to see and I spent all the morning there.
Coming out of the tower, I found myself right next to the Tower Bridge. I learnt about its history and how people built it before came to London. also learnt how the lifting mechanism(机械装置) worked to let ships through before visited it. I experienced the Glass Floor, a high-level walkway of the bridge. It was so exciting! When I was standing there, I could look straight down to the Thames, traffic and pedestrians(行人) over the bridge!
Afterwards, I went on the Tube — the London subway — to the Houses of Parliament. This is where the politics in England takes place. Before going inside for a visit, I took a lot of photos from the outside of this beautiful building.
Tomorrow I am going to get a map of London and have fun walking around the city.

It’s easy to imagine robot cleaners and factory workers, but some jobs need human connection and creativity. In some cases, they already perform better than doctors at diagnosing illness. With these machines, doctors can know what’s wrong with the patients more easily and quickly. Also, some patients might feel more comfortable sharing personal information with a machine than a person. Could there be a place for robots in education after all?
British education expert Anthony Seldon thinks so. And he even has a date for the robot takeover of the classroom: 2027. He thinks robots will do the main job of transferring(转换) information and teachers will be like assistants(助手). Smart robots will read students’ faces, movements and maybe even brain signals(信号). Then they will adapt(改编) the information to each student.
One thing is certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. In some parts of the world, there aren’t enough teachers and 9-16 percent of children under the age of 14 don’t go to school. That problem could be partly solved by robots because they can teach anywhere and won’t get stressed(压力大的), or tired.
Teachers all over the world are leaving because it is a difficult job and they feel overworked. How can robots help teachers? Teachers waste a lot of time doing non-teaching work, including more than 11 hours a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.

"Families aren't the ones the way they used to be. A lot of families have broken up. If husband and wife have problems with their marriage, they no longer stay together. And mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children, but now everyone is busy working. No one has time to look after children at home.
And the cars! No one walks anymore; more and more people drive. We used to walk five miles to school on schooldays, even in winter. But now we don't. And in school, children don't have to think anymore. In math class, for example, we used to add, subtract, multiply and divide(加减乘除)using our heads. But now kids don’t use their heads anymore ;instead, they use calculators(计算器).
Most families have computers now. In the past we didn't have computers. We didn't even have lights. My mother used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now we don't often eat home-cooked food.
And people talk less to each other than before. They are too busy to talk, too busy to eat, too busy to think...

【推荐3】It is well known that twins(双胞胎) are closer to each other than most brothers and sisters, after all, they probably spend more time with each other. In Britain there was a pair of silent(沉默的) twins. June and Jennifer Gibbons, who refused to talk to anyone but each other.
However, these special relationships are the result of lives spent almost any time together with each other. What happens when twins do not grow up together? Are they just like any other people, or are there still special similarities(相似点) between them? Professor Tom Bouchard tried to find the answer to this question. He followed sixteen pairs of twins, who lived in different families. Each twin was then asked about their life.
Here're the results. Many of the twins were found to have the same hobbies or habits, and some have the same illnesses(疾病). A lot of the twins have had children at almost the same times; sometimes they have even given them the same names. But the most surprising similarities are found between Jim Springer and Jim Lewis. The story of the "Jim Twins" was on newspapers and televisions. Born in 1939, and brought up by different families, both babies were named Jim by their new parents.
So how can we tell these similarities? Study shows that our personalities(个性) may be at least partly due to nature(归结于天性). On the other hand, some surprising coincidences(巧合) do happen all the time, not just in the lives of twins.
1. What did Tom Bouchard want to find out?A.How do the twins make friends in their life? |
