Whether you’re telling someone how to get to your house or guiding a stranger to a local museum, you should know how to give good directions. Here’re some tips for you.
First, guiding people by landmarks. Instead of directing people from the beginning to the end, think of it as directing them from landmarks to landmarks. It’ll let the person know if he’s still on the route (路线) you advised him to take. | Second, mapping out the directions. You can either create a map of the route in mind or simply draw a map. A map will allow people to realize where they’re going. |
Third, choosing the right route to describe. Give the simplest directions that are most likely to make the person understand. This way, you can reduce the chance that the person you’re giving directions will get lost. | Fourth, communicating effectively (有效地). Speak slowly and clearly. Also, don’t use words, phrases or names that only locals know. |
2. It’s better to say “when you see a bank, turn right” than “go straight and turn right”.
3. A real map is a must when giving directions.
4. The shortest route is always the best route.
5. The expressions we use should be understandable when giving a direction.

In the gardening class, teachers teach students different kinds of vegetables and how to grow (种) them. Then students work in groups.
②________ Why? Because they can have much fun in this class. They don’t have to sit at their desks in the classroom all day. They can get out, get their hands dirty, do things with their own (自己的) hands and relax.
③It’s also fun to get something to eat and see. In some schools, students like to grow carrots and tomatoes. It’s always interesting for them to get a carrot or a tomato, wash it and eat it right in the garden. In some schools, students like to grow flowers (花). When it’s spring, all the flowers come out and they’re really beautiful. Students like to walk and talk in the beauty. That’s their favorite thing to do after busy hours of work.
④Only fun from the classes? Of course not. Students can learn something, too. Keeping a school garden is difficult and all the students in the group need to come and help. This teaches students teamwork. Also, some vegetables are easy to grow, but others need a long time. This teaches students they need to wait (等待) before they get the things they want.
⑤There may (可能) be many other good things about school gardening. But one thing is for sure—students really love having outdoor classes.

Cultures across the world have different ways for people to greet one another. In Spain, many people kiss both cheeks. In New Zealand, they bump noses! The goal of these actions is to make others feel welcome. However, some people would rather say hello orally. They don’t like being touched. Neither does the sensitive plant.
Some people keep the sensitive plant as a houseplant because of its interesting behavior. When you touch the leaves of the sensitive plant, it releases(释放) water from its leaves and stalks. As water drains(流出) to the plant’s base, the leaves close and the stalks droop. This causes the plant to look wilted!
The sensitive plant draws back from physical contact because it doesn’t want you to touch it, of course! Just like people, this plant sends physical signals that you should leave it alone. This reaction to touch is a defense mechanism. Many animals and insects eat plants, so the sensitive plant learned to move to scare away predators(捕食者). Frightened by the sudden wilting, hungry animals move away to find a different plant to eat. Additionally, wilted plants don’t look mouth-watering. This encourages other nearby predators to look for their dinner elsewhere.
If you touch the sensitive plant and it wilts, have no fear! It’s still a healthy plant. After a few minutes, it will send water back to its leaves and stand straight up again. However, it takes lot of time for the sensitive plant to rejuvenate itself. Don’t touch the plant just to watch it wilt. It may seem like fun, but it’s not fun for rejuvenate.
It’s always important to pay attention to the body language of plants, animals, and other people! We should never want to make other living things uncomfortable, and especially not for our own entertainment.

In fact, playing catch is part of baseball practice – to make you get used to using a ball and glove. But any American kid will tell you it’s much more than that.
Playing catch is a time to be with your father. It’s a time when there’s nothing to worry about besides catching a ball. It’s a time when words move as seamlessly as the ball itself, back and forth, easy and relaxing. It’s an excuse to spend time together.
Because baseball is an American sport, and a big part of being American, playing catch is kind of an all-American dad activity. In the suburbs, most people have backyards – not large enough to play baseball in, but just big enough for a game of catch. Those without yards play in the street.
When adults are asked to talk about the good memories of their dads, many of them will say something about playing catch. Why? Probably because dads are usually very busy. A catch game is a time that is only for one thing. This is a time when a kid has his or her dad’s attention. There is no work, no phone and no other people around to take your dad away from you. For the time that it takes to play a game of catch, your dad is all yours.

Once there was a rich man, who was very fond of gold. He used to say, “While I have my gold, I am the happiest man in the world.”

There were only stones and sand around. Just then he saw a bag lying on the sand. He hoped that he would find some food in it and some water, too. He crawled up to the bag and opened it. Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississipi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in Southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil(巴西). It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam(大坝) across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits(利益) of this natural resource.

To remember her best friend who died of cancer nearly 10 years ago, Fredette decided to serve those in Orange County who are less lucky than she is.
She began with the simple idea of collecting donated (捐赠的) Build-A-Bears, the popular toy animal that is made by children themselves in the stores' workshops. Fredette then gave them as gifts to the homeless children in California during the holiday season.
With donations at more than 100 bears a year, Fredette and volunteers host activities every year, where volunteers give out not only the bears, but also clothing, meals and other things.
Not wanting to limit (限制) the giving to just the holiday months, Fredette now hosts other activities for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Halloween, providing the chance for her volunteer team to make a difference through the year.
“I love building relationships with the people I serve,” Fredette said. “The thanks they have, hearing their stories and seeing how happy they are, it's so cool.”
Future plans for Fredette include building a public food bank and providing a self-development class for students in her school who will soon attend college.
Heading to college herself in the autumn, Fredette is looking to stay local and continue to help out in her county. In fact, she was regarded as a “Dreamer & Doer” not long ago for her work in improving her community, along with 32 other high school students.

In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to.
For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for “making a fortune”. So, people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate (车牌照) number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 pm on Aug 8, 2008.
The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors’ robes (龙袍) and Chinese myth held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also stands for “long lasting”. That’s why a man always proposes (求婚) to a woman with 99 or 999 roses.
So what’s an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the character for “death”.
Because of this, many buildings skip (跳过) the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in the West. As a result, a building whose highest floor is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.
