What would the world be like if cars could drive themselves? Imagine seeing an empty car passing by on its way to pick up its owner, or a car full of passengers who are reading, listening to music or even sleeping. But none of them are worried about the road ahead.
Well, all of this could be the future of driving. There are several companies, including Google, working on driverless cars. So far, no Google self-driven cars have gotten a traffic ticket (罚单), but some of them have been in accidents when other cars hit them.
These cars are now still in the testing stages (阶段). But, if the tests are successful, these electric self-driven cars could be put into use very soon.
The cars are so special that they can take the place of drivers during certain situations. They are able to park themselves, or slow down when they notice objects close by. They can also control the speed if there is danger.
Scientists and engineers believe, with the help of wireless signals (无线信号) , cameras and GPS, creating a safe self-driven car might be possible. The cause of deadly (致死的) road accidents is usually careless drivers or bad conditions. The self-driven car may be able to prevent these. However, some people don’t like the idea. American lawyer Whit Drake does not believe these cars are safe. He thinks that technologies can also be mistakes.

What does taking the train mean to you? Perhaps it’s just a way of getting to your destination(目的地). In fact, the train itself can be part of the fun.
On March 28th, China’s first panda-themed tourist train left Chengdu in Sichuan for Zunyi in Guizhou. It soon became the talk of China with its special design and comfortable service.
It’s inside and outside are decorated with giant panda pictures. Attendants(乘务员) carry panda toys and passengers can try panda-shaped food and Sichuan snacks. Some people call it a mobile star hotel because it has a bar, karaoke room, dance hall, and mahjong(麻将) room.
This luxury(高档的) service is one aspect that has attracted travelers. But train travel interests people for other reasons.
In the fast-paced times we live in, train travel is a good way to slow down. It gives you time and space to read, sleep, chat with friends, or simply do nothing but watch the changing scenery outside.
One surprising thing is that you might meet new people. Sheng Yawei, 26, once took the longest railway in the world—the Trans-Siberian Railway in the world. Sheng met a Russian student and they became friends. “I also met a cute boy who gave me melon seeds(瓜子). Though we didn’t understand each other’s language, it made me feel nice.”

The history of the maglev train started in the beginning or the 1900s. The American Robert Goddard and the French Emic Bachelet came up with the idea of frictionless(无摩擦的) trains. But scientist didn’t succeed in making it at that time.
About 60 years later, the Japanese started their research on maglev transportation. After many years of experiments, the Japanese began to build their first test line. 7 km in 1975, and finished it in 1977. Many test runs started in July, 1977 with a speed of 517 km/h. In 1990, Japan built the Yamanashi Maglev test line. This test line was 42. 8 km long and the first running test was held in 1997.
Germans also started research on the maglev train in the early 1970s. It took them ten years to make the first track(轨道) model. In 1993, the longest nonstop test running was 1,674 km. That same year the speed reached 450 km/h.
China finished a 30-km-long maglev train line in Shanghai in 2003. This is the first commercial(商业的) maglev train line in the world. Although this project cost over 1 billion dollars, we should feel proud of it.

If wearing Google Glass—a pair of smart glasses—on your face isn’t cool enough, you might want to take a look at Nokia’s new skirt. It’s made of 80 mobile phones! It’s believed to be the world’s first smart skirt and has been shown at London Fashion Week. The smart skirt was created by the mobile phone company, Nokia. It’s not easy to make a smart skirt. It took three months to complete it. The biggest challenge in making the skirt was getting all of the mobile phones on the skirt, and allowing all the mobile phones to work together.
The screens are all connected to a computer. As the skirt moves, the screens change color and the skirt looks like silk. That’s not the only trick. The mobile phones are also connected to a hidden camera in the wearer’s hat. The screens can show what the wearer is seeing.
Unsurprisingly, the skirt won’t be making its way to shops. Instead, it’s more of an art piece. Nokia said they wanted to find a way to connect the smart technology and fashion together. “We used drawings, 3D printing, and programming languages to ‘build’ the skirt,” explained Nokia.

Have you ever taken a flight from Beijing Daxing International Airport(BDIA)? After opening on Sept.25, 2019, BDIA drew attention not just for its design, but also for its many high-tech facilities(设计)and services.
The new airport, in the southern most part of Beijing, is made up of a main terminal(航站楼), a supporting service building and a parking lot, they cover an area of about 1.4 million square metres, which is equal to 63 Tian’an men Squares.
The new airport is expected to carry 45 million passengers trips a year by 2022 and 72 million by 2025, China Daily reported. With more runways planned, the new airport will finally carry more than 100 million passengers each year. That’s around the total population of the UK and Canada.
The airport has many new technologies that make it smarter and more efficient. It is the world’s first airport with a double-deck departure and arrival(双进双出)design for its terminal building. “It’s more efficient for passengers than any other large airport terminal of the same size in the world,” Guo Yanchi, the chief engineer in charge of construction said.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, 86 percent of check-ins can be done through self-service check-in kiosks(值机一体机)and 76 percent of luggage can be checked quickly with the help of self-service bag-drop machines. Other technologies, such as a facial recognition(人脸识别)system, allow passengers to have a quicker check-in and boarding process.
The airport will also use a robot-operated parking system. Drivers just need to park their cars in given areas. Robots will then carry them to an empty space. When collecting their cars, drivers simply need to scan a parking ticket to find out where to collect their cars.

Chopsticks originated from (起源于) China. Though simple and little, they are a great invention in the history of humans. There are many legends (传说) about chopsticks, Da Yu and chopsticks is one of them.
It is said that during Yao and Shun times, Shun ordered Yu to control the flood. One day, Yu took a boat to an island, and he was so hungry that he used an earth pot to cook meat. After the meat was well-done in boiled water, he didn’t want to waste time to wait for it to cool, so he took two branches (树枝) to pick up the meat from the soup. After, to save time, he always took small branches to take out food from the hot pot. For a long time, he was skilled at picking up food with small sticks. In this way, the first types of chopsticks were born.
Some people think that the famous scholar Confucius (孔子) living from about 551 BC to 479 BC pushed the development of chopsticks. Confucius believed that using chopsticks instead of knives would remind people to stay away from killing and violence (暴力) at table. We enjoy our delicious food with our family members or friends while feeling the peaceful and people-loving world by using chopsticks at table anytime.
The chopsticks are made of different kinds of materials including bamboo, wood, animal bone, beautiful stone, and some other materials. There are more than 200 types of chopsticks now, among them, the bamboo chopsticks are most widely used.
“A chopstick can be broken easily; ten pairs of chopsticks hold each other tightly.” The song is popular with many people, and it always encourages people to work together.

Making a public speech is the thing that most people don’t want to do. The reason is that we are all afraid of making mistakes in front of others. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we will be. But forget it now. Public speaking is easy. It’s just a simple talking, Although Pm a shy man, I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned.
Keep your speech simple. Your audience(听众) can’t take all of your main ideas, and they can only remember one or two of them, not ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas very well. But if you can’t express what you want to say, then your speech will not be paid attention to. And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, your audience won’t, either.
Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech is, you have to organize your speech—how you are going to open or begin, what main points you want to make and how you’re going to close or end. A strong close is usually very important and critical(关键的): the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If not, they will be confused.
Keep your speech not long. The standard(标准的) length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can’t put their minds in one thing for too long time, which will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience’s reaction(反应), the audience will get bored. Of course, your speech will fail.
Following these suggestions above, you can make a good speech in public, and you will be an excellent speaker, I think.

The Comet Zone store at our school is more than just a shop. It is a place where students can have real-world business experience while getting Mason spirit wear(彰显学校精神的运动装).
It lies in the center of the school. With beautiful artwork and colorful clothing put on its wall and other things shown on the shelves, it looks fascinating.
The Comet Zone is run by students, giving them a chance to learn business ideas in a hands-on(动手的) environment. From managing inventory(库存) and marketing in the store to providing good customer service, students get valuable experience in business.
The shop has many kinds of spirit wear including T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats. Although they have low prices and good quality, the school’s Comet mascot(吉祥物) on them matters most in our eyes. And it makes many students, parents and alumni(校友) come to buy these things.
There are also many seasonal events at the Comet Zone. During Halloween, the shop sells “Boo Bags” that students can buy for only 3 dollars (about 21 yuan). They include treats and Halloween gifts that can be given to their friends. Everyone lights up when they get a gift bag from their friends.
The Comet Zone gives students a sense of school pride.
