In the late 19th century, a new art movement became popular. It was called Impressionism (印象派)and began with the famous artist Claude Monet.
December 5, 2016 marked 90 years since the painter's death. On November 16, 2016, his painting Meule sold for more than $81 million (559 million yuan). This was one of the biggest art sales ever.
Meule was painted in 1891 and is part of the 25-painting Haystacks collection. Each work shows at least one large hay bale (#h) in different types of light and weather. US artist Brooke Lampley told China Daily, "He [Monet] did completely new things with 20th-century abstract art (抽象艺术).”
Monet spent most of his life trying to paint outdoor scenes. One day, while drawing, he met his first art teacher, Eugene Boudin. Boudin encouraged the young Monet to become a natural scenery painter. Monet later said, all of a sudden. realized what painting could be. I could see my own destiny(命运) as a painter.”
In the 1870s, Monet started painting the same scene at different times of day. He took six canvases(油画布) and painted the changes he'd see during the day, be they light, shadows, or weather.
Painting these changes became Monet's art style and was later named Impressionism after his 1873 painting Impression, Sunrise.
During his life, Monet said his style showed his love of the natural world. “All I did was to I look at what the universe showed me, to let my brush show it,” he said.

So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic. According to their new study, reduced (减少) loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (全神贯注) and skill. When people keep eyes on what they are doing, they enter a state called “flow” Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex computer program but your skill level is low, then you may feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”, On the contrary (相反地),if the task, is too easy, then you may feel bored and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed and focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”

The air pollution was so bad in Harbin, in China, on October 21,2013 that the city had to close roads and schools, and cancel* hundreds of flights from its airport.
News reports said the smog (a mixture of smoke and fog) was so thick that people couldn’t see more than 10 or 20 metres in front of them.
It is also said that people could not even see the person standing next to them. The city’s website said: “You can’t see your own fingers in front of you.”
The local people said there was a “burning” smell in the air. Many people covered their noses and mouths with scarves or masks*.
The pollution was caused on several factors* including: farmers burning off old corn stalks* and crop stubble*; coal*-fired heating systems; and low winds that allowed the smoke to remain over the city.
The smog had been building up for several days. It became worse when the city turned on the public heating system, which uses coal to heat millions of homes and offices in the city.
Harbin has a population of more than 10 million people. It lies in northeastern China, where cold winter weather can last up to six months. The main fuel* there is coal, because it is cheaper than other types of fuel.
Air pollution from burning coal can cause health problems like heart disease. During the smog crisis* in Harbin, the number of people taken to the hospital with breathing problems was 30% higher than usual.
The city government is trying to reduce its use of coal by adding more insulation* and better roofs and windows to buildings to reduce heating needs. It has also used cleaner fuel for cars and factories.

Someone who is born today can expect to live about thirty-five years longer than someone who was born in the nineteenth century. It is even thought that in the future more and more people will celebrate their hundredth birthdays. Here are some rules for a healthy life.
Get off the sofa!
Sure, it is comfortable to sit on the sofa and watch TV. But doctors say you should get off the sofa. To keep fit, you have to walk at least 10,000 steps every day. In the past, people’s jobs required more physical effort. They often had to walk for miles every day. When farmers were working in the fields, they were keeping fit at the same time. Think about it: Do you get the same amount of exercise today as they did in the past?
Eat healthy food!
It is important to eat food that is fresh and natural, for example, fruit and vegetables. Fast food is not healthy. You should only have it once in a while. Eating too much of the wrong food will harm your health.
Rest while you can!
When we were babies, we slept for much of the night. Teenagers do not need as much sleep as babies, but it is important for you to get about eight hours’ sleep a night. At weekends, you have got more time, so use it not just for your friends, but for rest too.
Do not worry. Be happy!
