We all mess up (把事情搞砸). We’re humans and it’s not always easy to get along well with everyone all the time. Sometimes we hurt people’s feelings, so we apologize.

Apologies are one of the tools we use to build good relationships. When you say “I’m sorry”, it’s because you probably feel bad that something you did or said hurt another person. Saying you are sorry is more than just words. You’re also saying that you respect the other person and you care about his or her feelings. After apologizing, you might feel a little better. The other person probably will, too. When you apologize in a caring way, you can feel good because you are trying to make things right again.

When we find ourselves in any of the following situations, an apology can probably make a big difference.

●If you hurt or teased (嘲弄) someone, even you didn’t mean it.

●If you lost or broke something that belonged to someone else.

●If you did something you knew was wrong-like telling a tie or breaking a rule on purpose.

●If you didn’t do something you should do-like keeping a promise.

When someone apologizes to you, you may welcome it and be ready to forgive (原谅) and moved on. Or you might not feel like being friendly right away. You don’t have to be friends just because someone apologizes. It’s polite to accept and acknowledge (承认) the apology, but anything more is up to you!

Why did Song Dynasty (960-1279) officials(官员) wear hats that had two “wings”?

Several months ago, many pictures of Chinese students wearing winged-hats have been posted online. They use the hats to practice social distancing when they return to school. Many people say the hats look like those worn during the Song Dynasty. It's true that in the Song Dynasty, officials wore hats that had two long wing-like flaps (长翅). According to one legend (传说),the hats were designed by Zhao Kuangyin, the first emperor (皇帝) of the dynasty.

One day, when listening to a minister's report, Zhao noticed that many ministers were whispering to each other and not respecting court rules. Zhao came up with a practical solution. He required that wings should be added to the ministers' hats. Using a metal plate and bamboo strips as the wings, the "wings" prevented the ministers from talking to others sitting beside them. Since then, the court order had been kept.

Although the story is recorded in a book from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), some historians (史学家) think the story may not be true. The wings of the hats might just be a decoration that could make people look dignified (庄严的). They were not convenient (方便) to wear, so the hats disappeared in later dynasties at last.

【推荐2】Do you or your family know an elderly person who may feel lonely? Perhaps you have a grandparent who doesn’t live nearby and who might not see many people. It’s thought that there could be more than a million lonely older people in the UK who often feel sad. This might because they live alone, or they might be in a care home and haven’t got family or friends who visit.

Simply writing a letter can help to cheer them up. It’s an easy thing to do but can make a big impact(影响). Being able to write an interesting letter is also a good skill because a lot of modern communication is written and sent by digital(电子的)messaging and email. Perhaps you have a grandparent.

Everyday things that you do, such as what you learned at school, sporting achievements or places you visit, might seem ordinary to you but an older person would be happy to read about them in a letter. It could make them think back to when they were young and did similar things. The person may also want to write back to you.

Professor Smith, aged 67, set up a group called Silver Robin, which has helped children from six schools in Oxford to begin writing letters to older people. “It’s a lovely thing to do and connects different generations. Loneliness is not a nice thing and if a young person’s letter puts a smile on someone’s face, then that’s wonderful.

Where do I start?

Ask your parents if there's an elderly relative or family friend you can write to and they can help you get started. Your teacher may like to make contact with a local elderly care home so that your class can begin writing letters.

How else can I help?

There are other ways to help elderly people less lonely. For example, knowing the date of their birthday means you can send a card, saying hello and being nice to people in your street, checking on them with your family or knocking on their door sometimes just to see how they are can make a difference.
