In August, a tragedy (悲剧) happened in Guangzhou on a day of heavy rainfall. A family of seven people, including two children, died inside a car in a culvert(涵洞) as the water in the culvert became so deep that they couldn’t get out. Many people felt sorry for that. After hearing the story, 16-year-old Wang Haoyu made a decision—he would do what he could to stop it from happening again.
Four months later, the student from Guangdong’s Futian High School kept his word. He invented a culvert water level alarm system. It includes a transparent (透明的) column that can show the water level, a barrier gate (道闸), and an electric screen. When the water goes above a certain level shown on the column, the gate immediately closes and the screen shows the warning: “No Passing.” The system also has a loud alarm to keep passengers and cars away. When the water level goes down, the system returns to normal.
The invention won first prize at the Shenzhen Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest. It has received the national patent (专利). “Invention is bringing your creative ideas to reality. You must keep your feet on the ground,” Wang said, sharing the secret to his success. Before he started his design, Wang spent about two months doing fieldwork at the culverts in Shenzhen and Guangzhou at weekends. He took photos of the culverts, observed their problems, and asked local people and traffic policemen’s opinions. It is his first-hand investigation (调查) that has made Wang’s invention so practical. “I think my invention is definitely connected with life. If not, there would have been no point making it,” Wang said.

“Please, Mom and Dad. We will do anything if you let us go,” they begged (祈求)their parents.
After about a week’s time, their parents agreed. But they made some conditions.
“First, work very hard and get an A on your next book report. Second, pay for the concert tickets yourselves. Third, find an adult to go to the concert with you because Mom and I will have a charity dinner (慈善晚宴)that night.”
Alice and Amanda smiled at each other because they could easily meet the first two conditions. The only problem was the third one. Suddenly they looked across the table at the oldest sister Andrea who was 18 years old. Andrea could drive them to the concert.
The day of the concert finally arrived. When they got to the concert, the three sisters had the seats with the best view. Then the music began. “A plate of chicken is a good meal before games because it has much energy.”
In fact, the best meal before games should have carbohydrates(碳水化合物). Food like potatoes, bread, bananas is rich in it, but chicken is not.
“The best time to exercise is early in the morning.”
No! Morning is a good time to exercise, but it may not be suitable for(适合)you. If an afternoon or evening period is suitable for you, and you enjoy the feeling of getting healthier, you can choose(选择)any time to exercise. So there is no fixed time for you to exercise.
“If you drink water when you exercise, you’ll feel tired.”
The fact is that you must have some water during breaks(休息时间)when you exercise. And after exercising, you must have enough water. If you don’t drink enough water, then you may feel tired.

It all comes down to dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine is a chemical in our body that sends signals to the brain. It has many important roles—it affects our memory, attention span and how we learn. Our brains work best when there is a balance of dopamine—not too much or too little.
Our brains control dopamine in two ways. It either takes out dopamine quickly or gradually (逐渐地). Exam success can be linked to how fast dopamine goes back to an even balance, according to new research from the University of Missouri.
What happens when we take an exam? If you become stressed, your brain will start to overload on dopamine. It is like a cup overflowing with water. The quicker you are able to go back to an even balance of dopamine, the quicker you can concentrate, helping you perform better on a test.
Scientists found that during a test, people who slowly got back to an even balance of dopamine scored eight percent lower. That’s the difference between a good grade and a bad grade.
But don’t fear—there is good news for every student. The study also found that the more practice you get, the less stressed you’ll be.
So, it turns out that practice really does make perfect.

Food bank
The world’s first food bank was in the US in 1967. People and stores can give food to the bank if they have more. People in need could then go to the food bank and take the food home if they could not buy any for themselves. In Shanghai, there is a “shared fridge” in some places. It stores(储存)food that is donated by nearby markets and restaurants. It is free for anyone to take.
Pay as you like
A UK company called The Real Junk Food Project says that food that has passed its sell-by date(保质期)is still safe to eat. They collect this food from supermarkets and sell it in cafes. You only have to pay as much as you like. If you don’t want to spend money, you can also work at the cafes. There are now 125 Real Junk Food cafes worldwide
