I always carry a Rubik’s Cube(魔方)in my backpack and I’m really good at solving it quickly. I usually ask people to try it first. They turn the cube over in their hands, make a few moves and then shyly hand it back—they don’t even know where to begin.
That’s exactly what it was like for me to learn how to read because I am dyslexic(有阅读障碍的). It’s awkward to admit this, I still couldn’t always spell my full name correctly when I was ten, in grade four.
Solving the Rubik’s Cube has made me realize that sometimes you have to take a few steps backward in order to move forward. When I was in grade five, I had to leave public school and started a new life at a school for students who are dyslexic. I spent the next four years learning how to read, which later allowed me to return to high school with the ability to communicate and my ideas and express my intelligence.
The Rubik’s Cube also taught me that to work out something big, it helps to break it down into smaller pieces. I learned that it’s important to spend a lot of time thinking, to try to find connections of each part. I believe that there are surprises around the corner.
Like a difficult text or sometimes like life itself, the Rubik’s Cube can be a big puzzle. So I carry one in my backpack as a reminder that I can achieve my goals, no matter what difficulty I may face.

One day, the man saw a fat goose (鹅) run by, so he caught it. “What a hearty meal you will make!” said the man. “Tonight my stomach will be full.”
“Do not eat me!” cried the goose. “I am a goose like no other. If you feed me and take care of me, I will lay golden eggs for you.”
“Can this be true?” the man wondered. “Since this goose can talk, perhaps it can lay golden eggs, too. I will give it a chance (机会).” So the man took the goose home and fed it the last food in his kitchen, even though he had to go to bed hungry that night.
As soon as he woke up the next morning, the man rushed over to the goose. Under the goose he found a large, shiny egg made of gold. He took the egg to the market and sold it for lots of money. When he came home, his arms were full of food, including good food for the goose.

I was with my parents and my little brothers at the McDonald’s. Since there are only tables with four chairs, I’m always the one to sit at a nearby table by myself. Usually, I’m a little unhappy, but not this time.
A woman was sitting at a table, two tables away. She was young and pretty, not the traditional beauty, but a warm one. She had thick dark-brown hair and wore common clothes, but none of those was why she was so beautiful to me.
Her children spread the ice-cream all over their clothes, and she just kissed them and that’s all. She didn’t get angry. The love and warmth this woman generated completely changed my view of beauty. She generated warmth like the sun, and her children were little planets around her.
She made a difference to her children’s lives. Instead of making them feel bad about themselves, she made them feel great about everything. That is true beauty: to make a positive difference to others’ life through warmth and caring.

Know who to start. The person in a higher position or who is older should be the first one to reach out a hand. For example, if you are interviewed for a job, the interviewer should be the one to take the lead.
Don’t offer an unannounced handshake. If you offer someone your hand when they aren’t paying attention, they may not shake hands with you. It doesn’t mean the person doesn’t want to shake your hand. So start with a greeting to let others know that you’re here.
The handshake often lasts about 2 to 5 seconds. Most people don’t spend more time shaking hands. If the other person holds your hand for more than five seconds, politely withdraw (撤回) your hand.
Don’t show a sweaty (出汗的) hand. If you hand someone a sweaty hand, you may make them uncomfortable. Before shaking their hand, dry your own hand. If you’re holding a drink, hold it in your left hand so that it won’t make your right hand wet or sweaty because we often use our right hand to shake hands with others.
Shake hands in an up-and-down direction. Don’t go back and forward or side to side. Don’t swing the other person’s hand more than three times. It may make the other person uncomfortable.
1. What should you do before shaking hands with others?A.Hit them on the back. | B.Greet them politely to get their attention. |

A man named Boyan Slat took a swimming trip to Greece (希腊) when he was 16. The young man was shocked to see more plastic waste than fish in the ocean and decided to do something about it. That’s how the Ocean Cleanup got its start in 2013.
Slat’s group cleans up the GPGP using a floating (浮动的) plastic tube (管). The tube will go around the garbage and catch it. The plastic tube is 600 meters long. A big screen hangs down from it, about three meters into the water. Wind and waves will push the garbage towards the tube (fish can swim under the screen). Ships will pick up the garbage and take it back to the land to sort (分类) and reuse it.
The GPGP has about 1. 8 trillion (万亿) pieces of garbage. Most of it is plastic, like bottles and bags. Plastic garbage is very bad for birds and fish. They may get trapped or eat the plastic waste and then become sick or even die. Smaller plastic pieces can also enter our body through the seafood.
The Ocean Cleanup says it will be able to clean up half of the garbage in the GPGP within five years. If this first project works well, the Ocean Cleanup hopes to put as many as 60 more plastic tubes in the ocean. About 8 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. From Asia to America and everywhere in between, Swing---an energetic form of dance that includes six-step and eight-step rhythms(节奏)---has taken the world by storm. Making a recent comeback, swing dance floors have popped up all over the world. Many clubs make fans of Swing happy by holding nights when swing music is played, and sometimes even offering classes to attract customers.
Though Swing is now popular worldwide, it first appeared alongside the jazz movements of the 1920s and 1930s in New York City. While listening to jazz, the young black people of that time developed the movements of the Lindy Hop---a style of dance that is best known for a break away or “swing out” move and sudden improvisation(即兴表演).
It was reportedly given this name when a reporter was interviewing a person at the dance hall who was watching other couples dance. When asked what that dance was called, the watcher looked at a newspaper next to him that had an article about Lindbergh---the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic(大西洋)---which was titled, “Lindy Hops the Atlantic”. Then the watcher announced that the “Lindy Hop” was the name of the dance, and it has stuck since then.
In 1926, the Savoy Ballroom was the first large business to offer a place for people to listen to swing music and dance. With its huge dance floor, the Savoy became a big success overnight, attracting some of the best dancers and musicians in the New York area.
Within ten years, the Lindy Hops was sweeping through the United States and became a symbol of unity, as young people of all racial(种族的) backgrounds crowded into dance halls to swing the night away. Traditional dance teachers did not welcome it because they thought it was not even a real dance and were quite sure about its demise but Swing has proved them wrong; it continues to be one of the world’s most fun dances.
