As a child, Alain Robert was afraid of heights. One day, when he was 12, he returned home from school. At the front door of his building, he looked for his keys. He didn’t have them. It was 3:30, and his parents worked until 6:00 p.m. Robert looked at his apartment on the eighth floor. He saw an open window. He closed his eyes and pictured himself climbing the building. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.” A quarter of an hour later, he was in his house, and his fear of heights was gone.
Today, Robert (known as the French Spideman) still climbs buildings. In 2004, he climbed Taipei 101(the tallest building in the world at the time), and in 2011 he climbed the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai. To reach the top of a building, Robert usually uses only his hands and special shoes. To climb the Burj Khalifa Tower, though, he was made to wear safety ropes.
Robert climbs as a hobby. He also does it to make money for charity( for children and the homeless). Climbing is his passion. Although many climbing accidents have left him seriously disabled, he has become one of the best solo climbers in the world. Alain says in an interview, “We set ourselves limits, but we are all strong enough to aim higher, to achieve our goals. All we have to do is find such strength within ourselves.”
When Robert climbs, he wants to send a message to people. If you have a dream—something you really want to do—it can become real. But you must be brave and keep trying. If something bad happens, don’t give up. Close your eyes and tell yourself, “I can do it.”
1. Alain Robert is afraid of heights, isn’t he?2. How did Robert enter his apartment on the eighth floor one day?

4. Robert climbs for two reasons. What are they?
5. If you’re afraid of doing something, what is Robert’s advice?
6. What do you think makes Alain Robert become one of the best solo climbers in the world?

Today, we’ll know about a rural educator Lin Mao. He uses special methods to help his students put their best foot forward on the path of life. From time to time, Lin Mao makes a point of checking a special folder (文件夹) that has been front and center on his computer’s desktop for years. The 37-year-old junior high school teacher named it “Happy Homeland”, and it contains more than 40 files (文件), each one named after students he has taught. Each of them includes photos and communications between him and the student. “If a file has very little information, it means that I have not paid enough attention to that student,” says Lin, who has spent the past 14 years teaching at a rural school in Beichen district, North China’s Tianjin.
He will remind himself to catch up with such students and make sure that they are doing OK. “Many teachers might put most of their time to the top students, while those who are not doing as well do not get as much attention,” Lin says, adding that organizing the Happy Homeland folder helps him to provide equal care to all his students.
Over the past 14 years, Lin has kept up the good work and developed a four-step motivation method.
He believes that good teachers should first accept all children as they are and create a happy classroom atmosphere.
“I am just an ordinary teacher who loves education. I hope I can be a good guide and use my profession to lead more rural students in the right way on the path of life,” he says.

Pictures are falling off the wall. Lights are waving. Bed is shaking. Everything is moving. What’s going on? It’s an earthquake.
Earthquakes are horrible disasters (灾难) and some of them are destructive (毁灭性的). The top layer of the earth is made up of huge pieces of rock. They move past each other all the time along fault lines (裂纹线). But sometimes two pieces get stuck together. When they finally move away from each other, they move suddenly. And this makes the land above them shake. This is the most common cause of earthquakes.
During a small earthquake, you will feel a little shaking. But during a strong one, you will be thrown about. A strong earthquake is very horrible. Cracks will appear on the ground and windows and doors will break. Buildings will even fall down. So watch out! If an earthquake happens at sea, it can make big waves called “tsunamis” (海啸). When these waves reach land, they can destroy villages.
Earthquakes are measured (测量) on a scale (等级) of 0-9. It is called the Richter scale. A size 9 earthquake is the strongest and most dangerous. Since 1900, more than two million people have died in earthquakes. In 1976, a size 7.8 earthquake hit Tangshan, China. It killed more than 240,000 people!
Many earthquakes happened in China, so it is important for us to know what to do when an earthquake hits. Here are some tips on how to stay safe in an earthquake.
Indoors
◆ Hide under a desk or bed. Stay away from windows and anything that could fall on you.
◆ Do not get into a lift during an earthquake! When an earthquake has ended, stay under the desk until it is really safe to get up.
◆ Open a window and get out of the building quickly if the gas line in your house is broke.
Outdoors
◆ Move away from buildings and street lights.
◆ Do not run outside if you are in a shop and far from the door.
◆ Make sure you wear shoes after an earthquake. There may be broken glass on the ground.

We may all experience the power of words in our life, even when we were very young. A child is blamed ( 责 备 ) by teachers or parents, and after that, he might probably think of himself as a bad child. Most kids have that experience. They say it is important to praise children four times for each negative ( 负 面 的 ) word. Blaming will make things worse, while positive words are helpful especially when being in trouble or in need. When we fail the exam, encouraging words from our teachers or parents make us work harder at our lessons. Encouraging words can go quite a long way. They lift people up. For example, encouraging words to someone who is sad can help them make it through the day. Words can have a powerful effect on your brain. And it will in turn ( 相 应 地 ) have a great influence on your action.
Everything you do depends on what you choose to do. It’s not your parents, your past relationships or your job, but you and only you that are responsible for every goal you set. If you have dreams in life, write them down and speak them out. Your words are likely to bring you out something amazing.

These types of activities shouldn’t take up too much of our time, I started to record how much time I was spending playing computer games. I play games only after I’ve prepared myself for quizzes and exams. Also, I decide how long I want to play before I start-30 minutes a day at most. This way, I can relax by gaming, but I won’t spend the whole day playing games.
⑥To make sure that I am sticking to (坚持) my plan, I will set an alarm clock and put it in another room before I start playing. When it rings, I must get up to turn it off. I believe that gaming can be part of a productive day as long as I am able to learn how to balance it with my studies.
