As a girl growing up in Oakland, Harris was attracted to nature in college, she accepted a green lifestyle, avoiding chemicals(化学物质) in her food and beauty products lo make her carbon footprint(碳足迹) less.
Later, teaching in primary schools in poor neighborhoods, she was shocked for her students not having the ideas of protecting the environment. But she also understood. “For many communities of color, these problems often seem less important because they are dealing with daily lives,” she says.
Harris decided to teach children the advantages of sustainable(可持续的) living and in 2007 set up the grassroots group Grind for the Green(G4G), an organization that educates kids about green subjects as well as providing training in entry-level green jobs. She used hip-hop music to draw more people’s attention. “We created it to make a deeper connection with the kids” she explains.
One early project was a free solar-powered(太阳能的) hip-hop concert- the first of its kind—-in San Francisco. Solar panels(太阳能板) on a mobile bus produced all the electricity, and the kids set up road stands(货摊) offering green food and drinks made in bicycle-powered blenders. The event was successful, leading to other G4G concerts and attracting concert organizers and producers who wanted to work with G4G. “We’ve been able to get close to a special field that other environmental groups couldn’t,” Harris says. “Our events are produced by young people who carry out the tasks faster and better” she adds.
No one can say that poor people or people of color don't care about the earth. From the story of Harris, we’ve seen communities become connected with these green subjects once they’ve been educated and learn a way to do something about it.

He is a good student at school. He studies hard and gets good grades in the tests. But I want him to learn about piano or art because it’s very important for a child to learn things outside school. He just doesn’t understand that. He only does what the teacher asks him to do. | ||

One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. The man was sick in bed. His wife could not go out to work but to take care of him. Their little boy, Dennis, was a helper to his mother.
“I feel sorry for him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He wants very much to make some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Dennis. “I wish we could help him to make money,” said Clara.
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to help them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he cried, “I have a great idea!”
The other children jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle Mark sent us? Well, we can make popcorn, and put it into paper bags, and Dennis can take it around to the houses and sell it.”
When Mrs. Green heard of the idea, she thought it was a good one, too. Then Mrs. Green searched the Internet and ordered a household popcorn machine. After that, Mrs. Green, together with her three children, paid another visit to the family and told them about the popcorn plan. Needless to say, they were deeply moved, especially Dennis.
With everything ready, Dennis started out on his new business. Although it was a hard time for everybody, Dennis’s business worked out quite well. Deciding whether a product is green, however, isn’t always easy. We need to consider the whole life cycle of the product even after it’s of no use. Here is what we may keep in mind.
The materials of a product are usually our first focus. What is it made of? Are there any harmful chemicals(化学品) in it? Green products are made of more natural materials which are free from harmful chemicals, so they can be good for our physical health.
Packaging(包装) is important. How is a product packaged? Is it over packaged? We’d better choose glass, steel and paper packaging, as these can be reused or more easily recycled. We can also look for less packaging or even choose unpacked products whenever possible.
Location matters. Where was a product produced? Where are we buying it? Think about how much energy was used to get it to us. Try to choose local products. When it comes to food, it is a good idea to order directly from local farmers, shop at markets and buy fruits in season. Buying from stores near our houses is also a good choice, because we can go there without driving a car.
Look into what the company tells us about their product. It’s easy to say that a product is “green” or “all natural”, but the words may be too good to be true. So, much of the information about a product should be taken with a grain( 粒 ) of salt. After all, companies try to make us believe that their products are environmentally responsible.
The greenest thing is certainly the one we don’t buy. Things like food and clothing are necessary for life. But many others are not. Better than buying is choosing to leave an unnecessary product in the store. It sends a message to the producer, keeps money in our pockets, reduces(减少)waste and keeps the planet healthy.

A.Be easily understood. | B.Not be completely believed. |

C.We should never buy things with packages. | D.We should consider recycling all the products. |

It helped speed world trade between the East and the West. But the man-made waterway has also helped speed the rise of other things, such as invasive(入侵的) non-native species. Scientists say the invasive creatures have damaged the Mediterranean’s environment and caused native species to disappear.
The number of non-native creatures has risen since the Suez Canal was widened in 2015. The “New Suez Canal” brought disagreement from many Mediterranean countries. Belle Galil is an Israeli biologist who has studied the Mediterranean for over 30 years. She says much of the ecological damage cannot be repaired. She said action is needed to reduce the influence of the invasive fish and other sea life.
Galil works at Tel Aviv University’s Steinhardt Museum of Natural History. She noted that the widening and deepening of the Suez Canal has created a “moving aquarium” of species. These creatures could make coastal waters almost unusable for human beings. Galil believes the number of invasive species has reached 400. That is twice the number 30 years ago. She said this is a “historic example of the dangers of unintended consequences”.
Israel is now dealing with huge numbers of poisonous jellyfish that affect coastal power centers and keep people from visiting the seashore. Other poisonous species, such as the lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, are also appearing.
Galil said the problems of invasive species can be compared to those of climate change, pollution and over-fishing. She insists that the new species have caused a major “restructuring” of the ecological environment. This has endangered native species.
Some experts have suggested that increasing salt levels in the canal itself could create a barrier (障碍物) that would keep invasive species out.
1. What lesson can we learn from the influences of the Suez Canal?A.Seeing is believing. | B.Every coin has two sides. | C.Let nature take its course. | D.Everyone makes mistakes. |

A.To add some background information. | B.To stress the harm of invasive species. |
C.To solve the problem of invasive species. | D.To compare their similarities and differences. |

In an effort to create a cleaner, prettier city, the Beijing government has upgraded its waste treatment process as well as related construction projects and facilities to improve the local environment,CHINADAILYreported.
Ma Jin, who lives near a refuse transfer station in the ZhouzhuangJiayuan community in the capital’s Chaoyang district, said he used to suffer from the noise caused by garbage trucks traveling to and from the station as well as bad smells. After upgrades were made at the Xiaowuji station in 20l7, “The noise and smell both disappeared, “he said. “The best thing is that the station has provided cleaning services for all the streets nearby. Thus, we have a much better environment.”
Li Zhongxu, who has lived in the community since 2015, said he used to complain to authorities because the terrible smell prevented him from opening his windows.
“I’m glad that the government has heard us and has made a difference, which is even better than our expectations,” Li said. Many people from different departments have played a role in such upgrades.
Cai Huashuai, the head of the facility department said Beijing has nine refuse transfer stations with a total treatment capacity of 11, 200 tons a day. Xiaowuji can process 2, 000 tons a day.
In addition, we should also spread the knowledge and educate the public.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a helper who would take care of the dishes, do your housework, keep the house clean, and maybe even go to the store to do your shopping for you? Many robots can take care of some of these things already, but robots that use artificial intelligence(AI人工智能) are the ones that a lot of people need most. Not only will these robots be able to do housework, but they will be able to learn as well.
There are some types of robots that already use a form of AI called “swarm intelligence”(集群智能). As an example of how this works, scientists have created underwater robots that will be used to repair coral reefs(珊瑚礁) that have been damaged(损坏). What these robots do is work together to rebuild damaged reefs. As they communicate, each one knows what has been done in one area of a reef and can help build other areas or build onto something that another robot has done. Working together, the robots create a new reef that can then be left to grow and thrive (旺盛)on its own.
Amazon, the major electronic commerce company, has recently thought of an excellent idea. Instead of having a package delivered(包裹投递) to a shopper by delivery truck, Amazon will send out flying drones(无人驾驶飞机) that will bring a package to a person’s house very quickly. Just think about how amazing it would be when you order something from Amazon, choose immediate(立即的) delivery, and in an hour a drone lands in your front yard and leaves your package for you. These types of robots could turn out to be a dream come true for shoppers who want to get their orders superfast(超高速地)!

“Zero Waste” was first suggested by a French woman called Bea Johnson. Her ideas are: live a life and try not to create any rubbish; use different kinds of ways to save the environment, such as stopping the use of one-off objects; giving unwanted things to others or giving them away to organizations like the Red Cross.
Yu Yuan, a post-90s girl, is a practitioner(实践者) of “Zero Waste” living. She has been leading this lifestyle for 6 years. In the past six months, she has produced only a small can of garbage. In 2017, Yu and her partner Joe opened a shop called the Bulk House in Beijing, with the aim of making Zero Waste living easy and convenient by selling a lot of Zero Waste and environmentally-friendly products. For example, you can find 100% bamboo toilet paper there, which is of course completely plastic-free.
Have you ever counted how much garbage you produce in a day? If you want to lead a “Zero Waste” life, you can follow the 5R rules: refuse what you do not need; reduce what you do need; reuse what you use; recycle what you can’t refuse, reduce or reuse; rot the rest.
Of course, it is very difficult to change our lives in the blink of an eye. We usually need gradual steps that enable us to make lasting changes. If you want to begin reducing your waste, there are many different small things that you can do. For example, you can buy a reusable water bottle instead of using single-use bottles. Or, if you want to save money, you can just use a jar(罐子) from something you already have!
