It all started in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona. Christopher was a 7-year-old boy who was very sick. He always dreamed of becoming a police officer. Tommy Austin and Ron Cox, two police officers, made his wish come true. They gave Christopher a tour of the city in a police helicopter (直升机) and made a real police uniform for him.
There are four kinds of wishes children usually have:

Firstly, don’t read before bed. If you read at night, you will probably only get through a few pages before you get sleepy. Instead, I suggest reading before work. Even if you’re not an early bird, use the time you spend checking WeChat every morning to read some lines on the phone.
Secondly, make full use of the time when you’re on the way to work. For example, if you take the bus or subway to work, you can use this time to read. A half-hour commute (通勤) can easily turn into five hours of reading time every week—enough for most people to read a whole book.
Thirdly, _______▲______. Before you tell me how much you “enjoy the smell of the printed (印刷) books”, let me try to tell you the convenience (便利) of reading in the e-books app on your smart phone: you’ll always have your “books” with you, and most importantly, you can always get through a little reading in those lost minutes of the day—waiting in line for coffee, during work breaks and so on. Those pages add up fast.
What’s more, if a book is terrible, stop reading it. You don’t need to waste time reading a book that is not good. In fact, it’s more likely to make you quit your reading habit.
1. In the passage, the writer suggests people read ____________.A.in the morning | B.at noon |
C.in the afternoon | D.in the evening |
A.carry your books all the time |
B.paper books always come first |

People visit their ancestors’ grave sites and offer food, drinks and flowers. The festival falls on April the fourth this year. There are some Chinese poems that offer clues to Chinese history and culture through ancient expressions. Here we look at one of the classic poems in the history of Chinese literature:
In China, around the time of Qingming Festival, there is more rain. The poet is traveling far away from home on these rainy days. The rain and lonely walks lead to the separation of the soul and body, which adds a sad mood to this poem. The writer, Du Mu describes a rainy scene in a village in the first two lines. Then in the last two lines, the poet wants to find a place to take a rest, drink some wine(酒) and get rid of the sad mood. Where can I find a good tavern? In the last line, a cowherd points to a direction, which vividly depicts(生动描绘) two people looking far ahead on the rainy day.
Mourning Day Drizzling rain falls like tears on the Mourning Day, The mourner's heart is going to break on his way. Where can a wineshop be found to drown his sad hours? A cowherd points to a cot amid apricot flowers. (Translated by Xu Yuanchong, Chinese translator) | ![]() |
In this poem, Du Mu presents a village with apricot flowers around as the direction of the tavern. He doesn’t describe its details on a rainy day but leaves it to the readers’ imagination.
Qingming is not only a sad festival, but can also be a happy time for people to enjoy the spring and get closer to nature in an outing. Trees are green and flowers are blooming, so it’s a good time to be outside.

I walked into the supermarket near my house, not buying anything. I just wanted to stay there quietly. The pain of losing my husband was still too great. And this supermarket held so many sweet memories.
He often came with me, and almost every time he'd pretend to go off and look for something special. He always bought me yellow roses. He knew I loved roses.

As she came closer, I saw what she held, and I couldn't hold back my tears. “These are for you,” she said and placed three beautiful yellow roses in my hands. I wanted to tell her what the roses meant for me, but, still un-able to speak. I watched as she walked away.

Another big change is that my new teachers set a lot of homework, especially in math. So you can imagine why my heart wasn't exactly dancing when I started middle school.
By the end of October, Jake and I had become good friends. It happened because I was so hopeless trying to do my math homework. One day, I came to Jake after school.
“Hey, Jake, ”I began, "I was wondering if you could."
“Help you with the math homework, right?" he said, completing my sentence. "Sure, I'd be happy to help you, Miguel.” I was surprised because, to be truthful, I wasn't sure until that moment if Jake even knew my name. And yet here he was happy to save me from drowning in my sea of math problems.
That night, Jake and I studied together, and it was time well spent. I must say that Jake is an excellent math teacher.
The next day in class, I was even able to answer one of the math problems. Our teacher was surprised when I raised my hand, and guess what-so was I!
They say time flies when you're having fun, and I guess it's really true. I can't believe winter vacation is almost here! The school days have been flying by like a jet plane. I suppose it's because I'm a much more focused student-especially in math-than I ever was before.
Jake and I plan to hang out together during winter break. He promised to show me the Math Museum downtown. I believe it will be an unforgettable experience for us.
