What do you do with your old textbooks? Do you keep them or sell them?
Some people sell their old books. The books are about 1 yuan per kilogram. People usually use them to make recycled paper (再生纸). However, it needs much more money than making normal paper.
In the past five years, people have sold about 2.8 billion textbooks every year. They were about 20 billion yuan. If people could reuse these textbooks for one year, the money could be used to build around 40,000 Hope Schools in poor places.
How to reuse the textbooks in a right way? Zhu Pin is the headmaster of a middle school. He came up with a good idea. He made some rules about reusing some of the textbooks. Teachers take these textbooks to classrooms and give them out to the students before classes. After class, they take the books back to their offices. And when the term is over, the books are kept in the library. The school disinfects (消毒) the books every week. The rules also tell the students how to save resources (资源).
Some people also sell their old books on xianyu, an online supermarket for old things. It now has more than 30 million online sellers. More and more young people don’t mind using old books.

Balloons have a bad effect on our waterways and the ocean, and one California city has decided to stop people from playing with them in order to protect the coastline.
Not long ago, the Laguna Beach City Council began to ban (禁止) the sale and use of balloons in public places or at city events. The ban will take effect in 2024. First-time violators (违法者) will face a $100 fine (罚款), with a $200 fine for a second violation. Each further violation within a year would cost someone $500. The ban does not apply to use in homes.
Balloons are a cause of plastic pollution, and they are often played with on coastlines, beaches, and waterways. This is harmful to the creatures in the sea, which may eat balloon pieces, believing them to be food. Eating these pieces can cause them to get sick. As the balloons get further broken down into smaller pieces, they also bring microplastic pollution.
It isn’t just beaches that can be destroyed. Whalen says the ban also aims to solve wildfire risk. The balloons can cause fires by bumping into power lines. They’re also a huge cause of power outages (停电).
Other Southern California cities have taken similar steps, with Manhattan Beach banning the sale of balloons and their presence at public outdoor spaces. Glendale and Hermosa Beach have also placed bans on balloons.

Olowookere’s latest works are made from used car tires(轮胎)drawn in red, yellow and green. They join many used things in “Waste Museum” in Nigeria(尼日利亚), which is the first of its kind in Africa.
Olowookere is one of growing members of Nigerians who are using waste materials to make art and clothes. She said, “With the Waste Museum, we are showing the importance of waste. We want people to see how waste can be turned into treasure. Our final goal(目标) is to make sure that no waste goes into the landfill(废物填埋场)—a zero-waste future is possible.”
Olowookere said she had the idea for a museum when she saw the amount(数量)of waste that came from her home. She started collecting the waste. Then, the Waste Museum appeared. She collected waste materials for her works. Also, works from other artists are shown at the museum.
Nigeria has more than 200 million people. They throw waste into the streets and other areas. A lot of waste here will end up in the waterways. That will lead to worries about the amount of waste going into the sea.
Olowookere said, “We have a long way to go to get to that world without waste. Stop polluting the environment with your waste.”

This happens in other countries, too. Most Americans are making 7 pounds (3.17kg) of rubbish a day. So, an American makes about 102 tons of rubbish in a lifetime.
If you simply throw away that broken pen, it goes to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and is buried with other rubbish. To prevent polluting the groundwater, workers cover the rubbish with soil and keep it dry. And your pen will stay there for a long time, without having further use. But it could have a better place to stay in -the recycling bin. Have you ever noticed the different colors of rubbish bins in the street? Many cities in China have been running a waste-sorting campaign (垃圾分类运动). "They divide rubbish into "recyclable waste" and unrecyclable waste". Recycling waste can save energy, reduce (减少) greenhouse gas and keep landfill space free for unrecyclable waste.
Take your pen as an example. At the recycling factory, its metal parts could be taken out and reused to make other things.
But according to the experts, recycling is not enough. Making less waste should be put in the first place. They think that the best thing to do is just to keep using your things for as long as you can.
1. How much rubbish are most Americans making every day?2. How should we deal with broken pens in order to reuse them?
3. What are the advantages of recycling waste?
4. Which parts of the pen can be recycled?
5. In the experts opinions, what should we do to make less waste?

According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parents’ drop-off, they can’t use their own “screens” at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day.
It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. We do see the benefits of technology. But we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced learning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days.
During the course of the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without “screens”. For some teachers, this means bringing back a valuable lesson plan that has been put off for some time because it is “out of date”. Others have designed something completely new.
Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape(密室逃脱)games, are organized at school. In these activities, students socialize without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” they’ve got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company(陪伴)of their friends with no smartphones.
After our first screen-free day, students said that they were surprised they enjoyed it. Finding ways to help our students connect with one another is important.
While technology is already part of our world, it shouldn’t play such an important role in a learner’s life.
1. How many hours do most students in the school spend on screens every day?Now more and more Chinese teenagers find life more difficult without their parents. They don’t know how to do housework, because their parents do almost everything for them at home. This is a big problem.
Joy is 14 years old. One day her parents went on a trip to Shanghai, so she had to stay at home alone. At first she thought she would be happy because her parents were not in. She could do everything that she liked. But it was seven o’clock in the evening, and she felt hungry. “Oh, it’s time to have supper. Where can I get my food?” she said to herself. Later she found some food in the fridge, but she didn’t know how to cook. At that moment, she missed her parents very much. At last she could only go to a restaurant to eat.
Many of teenagers are the same as Joy. So I think teenagers should learn some basic life skills such as tidying up their rooms, dressing themselves, cooking some simple dishes and so on. They shouldn’t depend too much on their parents, either. Learning to be independent is quite important for them.
1. Do most Chinese teenagers know how to do housework?2. Where did Joy eat her supper at last?
3. According to the passage, what is the writer’s advice to solve the problem?
4. Do you think teenagers should learn to do housework? Why or why not?
Are you happy? Perhaps some of you will say “no”. In fact, being a teenager is hard. You may worry about a lot of things in your life.
Do you know what British teenagers worry about most? You can find the answer from the chart below. The research was done by the UK’s Department of Health among more than 100,000 teenagers. Here are the results.
Many Chinese teenagers share similar worries with the British teenagers. A recent research shows that many Chinese teenagers suffer from social life, study and emotional problems.
To solve the problems, some schools came up with the idea of happiness education. For example, Tsinghua University High School tried to meet students’ needs. It built a skating rink and different laboratories to develop their interest.
While schools take action, students themselves can do something, too. The professor Nadia Lovett from Australia believes students’ habits, hobbies and attitude toward life all play a role in their happiness.

But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. The World Health Orientation (WHO) says, over half of the people in the world may be sleep-deprived (睡眼不足的). Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100, 000 traffic accidents a year.
Also, sleep problems can cause medical problems, such as high blood pressure.
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy”. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don’t have much time to sleep. They only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a credit (信用) card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don’t sleep, the more hours you should sleep to ‘pay back’ the hours on your ‘sleep credit card’. ”
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said, “Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more. ”

Parents sometimes argue with each other about things—that’s just a fact of life.
How often do your parents argue?
We asked 284 teenagers and here is the result.
Most teenagers feel sad or afraid when their parents argue. They might think their parents don’t love each other anymore and that their arguments will lead to a divorce (导致离婚). In fact, occasional (偶尔的) arguments are a sign of a healthy relationship.
It is normal for parents to disagree or argue sometimes. They might disagree about important things like jobs and family decisions. They might even disagree about little things that don’t seem important at all—like what’s for dinner. These arguments are often over quickly. Parents may say sorry and make up, and the family returns to normal.
One important thing for teenagers: If you ever see the arguments between your parents turn violent (暴力的), don’t be afraid to bring it up with your teacher or another adult you trust. They will know what to do. |
However, it can be stressful or even scary when your parents argue. Sometimes you might find it hard to sleep or go to school. If you really feel strongly about this, talk to your parents about it. Don’t talk to them while they are arguing. Instead, wait until after an argument and try to talk to them together. Explain how their fighting makes you feel.
