What do you do with your old textbooks? Do you keep them or sell them?

Some people sell their old books. The books are about 1 yuan per kilogram. People usually use them to make recycled paper (再生纸). However, it needs much more money than making normal paper.

In the past five years, people have sold about 2.8 billion textbooks every year. They were about 20 billion yuan. If people could reuse these textbooks for one year, the money could be used to build around 40,000 Hope Schools in poor places.

How to reuse the textbooks in a right way? Zhu Pin is the headmaster of a middle school. He came up with a good idea. He made some rules about reusing some of the textbooks. Teachers take these textbooks to classrooms and give them out to the students before classes. After class, they take the books back to their offices. And when the term is over, the books are kept in the library. The school disinfects (消毒) the books every week. The rules also tell the students how to save resources (资源).

Some people also sell their old books on xianyu, an online supermarket for old things. It now has more than 30 million online sellers. More and more young people don’t mind using old books.

Balloons have a bad effect on our waterways and the ocean, and one California city has decided to stop people from playing with them in order to protect the coastline.

Not long ago, the Laguna Beach City Council began to ban (禁止) the sale and use of balloons in public places or at city events. The ban will take effect in 2024. First-time violators (违法者) will face a $100 fine (罚款), with a $200 fine for a second violation. Each further violation within a year would cost someone $500. The ban does not apply to use in homes.

Balloons are a cause of plastic pollution, and they are often played with on coastlines, beaches, and waterways. This is harmful to the creatures in the sea, which may eat balloon pieces, believing them to be food. Eating these pieces can cause them to get sick. As the balloons get further broken down into smaller pieces, they also bring microplastic pollution.

It isn’t just beaches that can be destroyed. Whalen says the ban also aims to solve wildfire risk. The balloons can cause fires by bumping into power lines. They’re also a huge cause of power outages (停电).

Other Southern California cities have taken similar steps, with Manhattan Beach banning the sale of balloons and their presence at public outdoor spaces. Glendale and Hermosa Beach have also placed bans on balloons.

We want people to see how waste can be turned into treasure. Our final goal(目标) is to make sure that no waste goes into the landfill(废物填埋场)—a zero-waste future is possible.”

Olowookere said she had the idea for a museum when she saw the amount(数量)of waste that came from her home. She started collecting the waste. Then, the Waste Museum appeared. She collected waste materials for her works. Also, works from other artists are shown at the museum.

【推荐3】When your pen is broken, you think that's the end of its life. You throw it away. It then joins tons of other rubbish that is becoming a big problem in cities. This happens in other countries, too. Most Americans are making 7 pounds (3.17kg) of rubbish a day. So, an American makes about 102 tons of rubbish in a lifetime.

If you simply throw away that broken pen, it goes to a landfill (垃圾填埋场) and is buried with other rubbish. To prevent polluting the groundwater, workers cover the rubbish with soil and keep it dry. And your pen will stay there for a long time, without having further use. But it could have a better place to stay in -the recycling bin. Have you ever noticed the different colors of rubbish bins in the street? Many cities in China have been running a waste-sorting campaign (垃圾分类运动). "They divide rubbish into "recyclable waste" and unrecyclable waste". Recycling waste can save energy, reduce (减少) greenhouse gas and keep landfill space free for unrecyclable waste.

Take your pen as an example. At the recycling factory, its metal parts could be taken out and reused to make other things.

But according to the experts, recycling is not enough. Making less waste should be put in the first place. They think that the best thing to do is just to keep using your things for as long as you can.

1. How much rubbish are most Americans making every day?

2. How should we deal with broken pens in order to reuse them?
