A hare was very popular with the other animals who all said to be her friends. But one day she heard the hounds(猎狗)coming and hope to escape them with the help of her friends. So she went to the horse and asked him to carry her away from the hounds on his back, But he declined, saying that he had important work to do for his master instead. He said he felt sure that all her other friends would come to help her.
She then asked the bull, and hoped that he would prevent the hounds with his horns(角). The bull replied, "I am very sorry, but I have an appointment with a lady, but I feel sure that our friend a goat will do what you want."
The goat, however, feared that his back might do her some harm if he took her upon it. The ram, he felt sure, was the proper friend to apply to. So she went to the ram and told him the case. The ram replied, "Another time, my dear friend. I do not like to get into it, as hounds have been known to eat sheep as well as hares."
The hare then applied as a last hope to the calf, who regretted that he was unable to help her, as he did not like to take the responsibility, as so many older animals than himself had declined the task. By this time, the hounds were quite near and the hare took to her heels and luckily escaped.

After the first day, little Tommy came home with a very serious look on his face. He didn’t kiss his mother hello. Instead, he went straight to his room and started studying. Later, as I was walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying in his room. I knocked on the door and asked, “Kevin, do you want to talk?"
No one answered I tried again. Still nothing happened.

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called “Bike for a Better City”. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.
For several years this group has been trying to get city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes—for bicycles only—on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be accidents. “Bike for a Better City” feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bicycle lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don’t like the idea—they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don’t like the idea—they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park—the largest open place in New York—is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But “Bike for a Better City” says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. Until that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park.

Milan may not be the first place tourists think of when they think of Italy. Rome is the most famous city in Italian history, Venice draws visitors who want to travel along its canals(运河) and Florence is popular with the art lovers. Yet Milan can often be let off tourists’ lists. But although some see Milan as the “Ugly Sister” of these cities, in 2015, the city is “Suddenly back in fashion in a big way”.
The delicious Milan Expo will look at the future of food, trying to answer the question of how Earth’s fast-growing population can be fed in the future. According to the Lonely Planet website, “144 countries will set up shops in northwest of central Milan, forming a mini city-within-a-city”.
Milan’s famous opera house, La Scala, normally(通常地) closed in the summer, will also host daily performances during the Expo, reported Fox News.
Not interested in opera? Don’t worry. Visitors who prefer sports may want to visit the San Siro Stadium(体育馆), home of the soccer teams AC Milan and Inter Milan. The stadium is one of the most famous in Europe and has seen many important games over the years, both in Series A (甲级联赛) and the European Champions league(欧比赛).
So even if all of its fashion and beautiful people can make Milan seem “Soulless(缺乏灵魂的)” as Lonely Planet said, it still has “a serious sense of history and place”. Many people will be discovering it this year, and eating great food from all over the world to help solve world problems. Will you?

【推荐3】We wake up very early to go to school, maybe even earlier to meet with a teacher, complete our extracurricular(课程以外的) activities, come home to have a quick dinner, talk for eight minutes with our parents and do homework until we fall asleep. But then we remember we have to look at the American College Test(ACT) exercises one more time. Half asleep, we run downstairs to get the ACT books, and start studying. After this we finally get to turn off the lights and drift away to sleep. And then six hours later, we do it all over again.
In my health class, my teacher told us that teenagers need at least eight to nine hours of sleep each night. The sad truth is, with so much to do every day, high school students cannot keep to this sleep schedule(安排).
Let me ask you all a question: Doesn’t it seem more humane(人道的) to give a teenager perhaps two hours of homework each night? This would allow us to have the eight to nine hours of much needed sleep. Or does it seem better to pile students with five hours of work a night? It leaves us very little time to relax, therefore reducing the time that we can sleep.
In my opinion, the present structure(结构) of the junior year of high school doesn’t work well. Junior year of high school is a time for growth. By this time many students have the ability to think creatively, and solve challenging problems. Homework is important for a student’s growth. But do we really need to spend countless hours a night doing it? Too much homework can only lead to too little sleep and too low an ability. I do think it is time to change the structure, so that we sleep at home and learn at school.
1. In the first paragraph the writer gives________.A.a picture of the present daily life of high school students |
B.an example of an ideal daily life of high school students |
C.a reason for high school students to live a busy daily school life |
D.a suggestion of what high school students should do to pass ACT |
A.junior year of high school is the most important growth period |
B.challenging problems are needed for a teenager’s growth |
C.the ability to think has nothing to do with homework |
D.the present structure leads to students often sleeping in class |
A.To prove the role of enough sleep in teenagers’ growth. |
B.To complain about the problems in the system of the ACT. |
C.To ask for a change for less homework and more sleep. |
D.To discuss the relationship between sleep and homework. |
The Chinese version of TikTok, called Douyin(抖音), has amassed(积累) 400 million daily active users, parent company ByteDance revealed in its annual report this week. This is an impressive growth for the addictive(上瘾的) video app, which had 250 million daily active users in January last year.
The report, which describes the user behavior and trends, illustrates(表明) the cultural difference between China and the U.S., said Katherine Wu, an investor at New York-based firm Notation Capital. "Things that trend in these two countries are quite different. For example: knowledge-based content is extremely popular in China, and less so in the U.S. Also, this was wild to me: those creators that did the most dance videos in China are users born in the 60s (!!), whereas in the US, it seems that it's mostly teenagers who are creating the dances," she wrote.
ByteDance claimed (宣称) that Douyin has established itself as the largest knowledge, culture and art platform in China. (Douyin is only available in mainland China.) Indeed, 14.89 million "knowledge-based content videos" were shared on the app last year, it claimed.

From the moment I talked to her, I knew Kay would be a cherished(珍爱的) friend. Her smile and good cheer made me feel better just being around her. Her voice was always full of happiness.
It didn't take long before Kay was beloved by everyone in our neighborhood. Children and adults visited her home often. Although she already had four cats, she also kept a stray(流浪的) dog.
When we visited her, she would kindly listen to all of our trouble and then say something so wise that we would leave her home with our hearts singing. Sometimes I would read her my stories and she would always encourage me to keep writing.
She told me she was badly ill when we met for the first time. But she lived each day with such cheer that I often forgot just how ill she was. Still, she died on a cold winter day with heavy snow falling down.
During the short time we had together, I learned so much from Kai about how to truly live. She taught us so many lessons about kindness, happiness, hope and cheer.
