Teenagers are known for being creative and full of new ideas. Let’s have a look at these teenage inventions that might change the world.
Banana leaves usually go bad in two or three days. Tenth Hadith, a teenager from India, used UV to make the leaves stay fresh for a year. Tenth thinks that one day the leaves will be used for making plates, cups and other things. | David Cohen, an American teenager, built an earthworm robot. It is able to go into even the smallest places, where humans or dogs can’t go. It will be used for finding people in a fire or an earthquake. |
Remya Jose, a 14-year-old from India, found it tiring and boring to hand wash clothes in the nearby river. She reused some bicycle parts and created a washing machine that saves time, energy and keeps people fit at the same time. | Kenneth Shinozuku, a 15-year-old from New York, noticed that his grandfather who got Alzheimer’s disease would leave home and often get lost. At that time, his young company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car known as eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle(车辆).
②Flying to work or school sounds unbelievable. Not only is it fun to fly, but “there would never be traffic again, because the sky is very, very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than common cars. “We go much faster, we go in a straight line, we fly on less energy,” he says.
③So far, though, flying cars haven’t taken off as a product. Will their day come? There are still many problems to solve. Their high price means most people won’t be able to afford one. So, some companies are developing them as air taxis that people could pay to ride. The main problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents in the air are dangerous to both the passengers and anyone on the ground beneath. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are aiming to make them self-flying—no human pilot required.
④Another problem is space. Most aircraft need long runways to take off and land. Lifting straight up and down like a helicopter solves this problem. But eVTOLs still need special spaces, called vertiports, for take-off and landing. Finding places to put these could be tricky, especially in crowded cities. But maybe some could go on top of buildings.
⑤What do you think? Would you enjoy riding to school or to visit a friend in a self-flying taxi? Are flying cars a good idea, or should we find other ways to get around in the near future?

There are a few things that make this chicken salad different from the other chicken salads. First, we use fruit jam (果酱) in the relish. You can buy any fruit jam, like banana jam or orange jam. But we have bottles of strawberry jam that my mother made, so we use the strawberry jam. Second, we put some green olives(橄榄). Green olives give the salad an interesting taste and make a big difference. Now let me tell you how my family makes the salad.
◇First, mix up all of the salad ingredients in a large bowl. The ingredients are chicken, tomatoes, green olives, onions and apples. If you like lettuce, you can also put some.
◇Next, make the relish. Please mix the jam, the juice and the salt.
◇Finally, mix the relish with the salad ingredients.
Do you have a favorite chicken salad recipe? Please tell us about it. You can write to greensalad@yahoo.com.

What do you think of the "new" hat I made for my sister? It used to be my mum's sweater. Posted by Gina at 8:32 a.m. on 11th February 2018 New uses for old clothing Nowadays, we're more wasteful than ever buying, using and throwing things away without thinking about the costs. We need to start living more responsibly — but how? One answer is to upcycle (再生利用). If you're like me, you might already make soil for gardening from food waste and use empty paper boxes as storage space. Did you know you can apply (应用) the same way to old clothing? You just need imagination! I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try? |
Reply TerryB Posted at 9:08 a.m. on 11th February 2018 Why don't you give your old clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don't wear anymore. So I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need. Reply Gina Posted at 9:28 a.m. on 11th February 2018 Good point! I'm talking about only the oldest clothing in your room — the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil, we should give it to those in need. Reply Betty99 Posted at 10:18 a.m. on 11th February 2018 I've made shopping bags out of T-shirts and dog toys out of socks. Upcycling clothing is a fun hobby, but the most important thing is that it makes me feel like I'm living less wastefully. |

Many people want to help others but don’t have the time or chance to do so. The app Be My Eyes lets you help blind people all over the world and gives you that feel good feeling with a little time and effort on your part.
Be My Eyes is a free mobile app to make the world more accessible (可接近的) for blind and low-vision (视力低下的) people. The free app connects blind and low-vision people with sighted (有视力的) volunteers from all over the world. People can “lend their eyes” to help with short, simple tasks through a live video call. Through the call, blind people can ask a sighted volunteer for help, with tasks that need normal vision. The sighted volunteer can see and describe what the blind person is showing by filming with the video camera in the smartphone. With the help of the app, sighted volunteers can solve the problem that the blind person is facing.
The idea behind Be My Eyes comes from a Danish man, Hans Jorgen Wiberg. He started losing his vision when he was 25. He wishes that the app will both make the blind people’s life easier and provide a new way to volunteer. It takes only a few minutes to help, so the app is a good choice for the busy, modern people with the energy to help others.

The survey of 2,000 people found that social media apps, calculators (计算器), calendars and cameras were
also seen as particularly important functions. Navigation apps (导航应用) such as Google Maps were popular too – with one in six people admitting they would feel unable to travel around an unfamiliar city without one. The study also found checking Facebook and taking pictures of others are carried out more frequently than making calls. Also on the list were the calendar to remember appointments and birthdays, mobile banking and the news are apps that make day-to-day life a little easier.
Tom Barr said: ‘The functions on a mobile phone have developed and improved drastically (剧烈) over the past 10 years. With so many ways to keep in touch nowadays, people are using the functions that are convenient for them. As we get less and less time to ourselves, we need more convenience in our lives and less difficulty. While calling can be more personal, it doesn’t always save your time.’
Scientists at Rice University wanted to see if the latest mobile technology would be used by the students to
improve their learning. But a year later, the researchers concluded that it’s not enough to give students the right
technology, but said they need guidance about how to use it.

Don’t take no for an answer. At school, I learned not to take no for an answer. In high school, a teacher of mine told me I was too shy and that I would never win a speech competition. It made me feel so sad that I practiced hard in public every day and tried to take part in all kinds of speech competitions. All those efforts paid off finally. In a national competition, I won first place! I keep the gold medal (牌) in my bookcase all the time to remind me that there is always a way. We should not let anyone else decide what we can achieve. —Li Yixiao, Jilin |
Seeing a bright future. I was not a confident boy when I was very young. But in the 8th grade, my art teacher, Mrs. Huang, changed me completely by saying the following words, “I don’t want you to invite me to your high school graduation. Instead, I want you to invite me to your college graduation. The day will come, I believe.” Eight years later, I became the first person in my family to graduate from college.
