Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep(深), such as your wishes or fears(害怕), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong, and though they may not be perfect(完美的), they at least will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose(故意地)to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value(重视) all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

Letters Alive invites famous actors and actresses but there are no funny jokes or different competitions. Instead, only one person walks up to a microphone and reads a letter. The letters were written by people from different times in history. For example, in one episode(集), they read a letter written by the famous writer Xiao Hong to her younger brother in 1941. The letter shows that Xiao Hong missed her brother so much and had great hopes for his future.
“Every letter opens another world for us,” said Guan Zhangwen, the director of the TV show. “It seems that we can experience the real lives and feelings of the writers.” Since its first episode on December 5, 2016, Letters Alive has been widely praised. Many audiences(观众) say that it has provided a breath of fresh air to today’s TV shows.
Besides Letters Alive, some other cultural TV shows have also attracted(吸引) Chinese audiences. A recent study has found that some plants will scream in a high frequency(频率) when they are having stress.
The research was carried out on tomato plants and tobacco(烟草) plants by cutting their stems(茎) and taking water away from them. When they started cutting the stems, they found that the plants started “screaming” between 20 and 100 kHz and they believe that this scream is to warn other plants nearby.
When the tomato plants’ stems were cut, 25 distress sounds(求救信号) were recorded during an hour, and on the other hand, 11 distress sounds were recorded from the tobacco plants.
When they took water away from the plants, the tomato plants recorded even more distress sounds with 35 distress sounds in an hour while the tobacco plants recorded 15 distress sounds.
The group of scientists then said, “This changes the way we think of plants as we always made sure that they were silent, but the thing is that their voices are too high to be heard.”

You must think a computer is the best thing in the world, right? You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything. Well, it’s not! In fact, the brain is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First your eyes check out what’s going on, then tell your brain, and your brain decides how quickly you need to react(反应), and then your muscles(肌肉)go into action. That is just from your brain. No computer could ever come close to that!
The brain weighs just 3 bounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ(器官). There are about 100 billion tiny, tiny little cells(细胞)in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all!
Your brain stops growing when you’re 18, but it actually keeps on developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won’t be able to fool them! Believe it or not, your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long-term memory establishment(建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.
So everyone should be proud of such a gift of nature.

There are many colors in nature. But do you know if a color has weight? If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment (实验).
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Wrap (包裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why does it happen? A scientist found that different colors have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind. The heaviest color is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white.
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the color they like, and refuse the color they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture (家具) for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only one hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change when we see different colors.
1. A color has weight in a man’s mind.2. Red is the lightest color in a man’s mind.
3. Using the color you don’t like will keep you healthy.
4. Your temperature will fall when you get into a cool colored room from a warm colored room.
5. According to the passage, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours if you stay in a red room for an hour.

The warm colours are red, orange and yellow. Where there are warm colours and a lot of light, people usually want to be active(活跃的). People think that red example is exciting sociable(善交际的)people, those who like to be with others like red. The cool colours are green, blue and purple. These colours, unlike warm colours, are relaxing. Where there are cool colours, people are usually quiet. People who like to spend time alone often prefer blue.
Red may be exciting but one scientist says that time seems to pass more slow in a room with warm colours than in a room with cool colours. He suggested that a warm colour such as red or orange is a good colour for a living room or a restaurant.
People who are relaxing(休闲)or eating don't want time to pass quickly. Cool colours are better for offices of factories as the people who work there want time to pass quickly. Scientists don't know why people think some colours are warm and other colours are cool.
However, almost everyone agrees that warm colours remind(使想起)people of warm days and cool colours remind them of cool days.
