Matt jumped into bed. His father sat down beside him.
“What kind of day did you have?” he asked.
“It was a bad day for me,” Matt answered. “I had a fight with Ned. The teacher sent a note home about me. And Mom talked about it with me.”
“Yes, part of the day was bad,” Mr. Gold said. “But there were good parts, too. Now it’s time to go to sleep. So, tell me about the best thing today.”
Matt smiled. “After school I went fishing,” he said. “No one wanted to go with me. So I had to go alone. I didn’t think I would have any fun. But I did! I caught a fish!”
“I’m glad you had a good time,” Mr. Gold said. “Think about it until(直到)you go to sleep. Happy dreams!”
“Good night, Dad,” Matt said.
His father kissed(亲吻)him good night.
Every night, Mr. Gold and Matt have a little talk like this.
Every night, Matt answers the same question. “What was the best thing that happened to you today?”
Every night Matt goes to sleep thinking about the best thing. He has many happy dreams!
Sometimes he has to think hard to find the best thing. Sometimes it is a very small thing. But he always finds one good thing to think about.
Matt’s father taught his son a good way to end his day. You may want to try it. If you do, why not begin this every night?

Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.
“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around.” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”
Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
·If you are using a map, turn it so that it relates to (与……有联系) the way you are facing.
·If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree — something easy to recognize. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
·Simplify (简化) the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again.

But some people do not think that kids should get rewards by doing chores. Susie Walton, an expert, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn’t important unless you can get something. “Running any kind of family is team work.” Walton says, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities (责任) in the house.”
Other people believe that getting money or other rewards makes kids do chores happily and it also teaches them real world lessons about what we need to do to make money. There are also some apps now. With the Chore-Monster app, kids can get points and online gifts by doing chores. Kids can change them into real life rewards either online or in the real world. “We hope kids can do more chores so they can get more rewards,” one man says.
What do you think of it? Should kids get rewards for doing chores? Or should kids help do chores without getting anything?

That is what a wise man does. But the fool does just the opposite. If he finds that life has given him a “lemon”, he gives up and says, “I’m beaten. I haven’t got a chance.” Then he starts to develop a sense of self-pity. But when the wise man is handed a “lemon”, he says, “What lesson can I learn from the bad luck? How can I improve my situation? How can I turn this lemon into a lemonade?”
Here is an interesting story of a woman who did just that. Her name is Thelma. “During the war,” she told me about her experience, “my husband was sent to an Army training camp near the Mojave Desert. I went there to live with him. But I hated the place. I had never felt so terrible before. My husband was ordered out for training, so I was left alone most of the time. Not a friend to talk to but only the local people who couldn’t speak English. The wind never stopped blowing. All the food I ate and the air I breathed were filled with sand, sand, sand! I was so sorry for myself that I wrote to my parents. I said I couldn’t stand it one minute longer. My father answered my letter with just two lines—two lines that completely changed my life:
Two men looked out from prison bars (监狱铁窗).
One saw the mud (烂泥),the other saw stars.
I read those two lines over and over. I was ashamed of myself. I made up my mind I would find out what was good in my present situation. I would look for the stars.”

Last summer vacation I travelled with my family to the Hawkesbury River in Western Sydney. It was one of the most unforgettable summer vacations in my life.
Staying by the river helps us escape (逃脱) from the hot weather and noise of the city. Every day, my family and I got up early to go swimming in the cool water. In the morning, we all took part in a big game. We enjoyed water-skiing, wakeboarding (尾波滑水) and other activities. These activities made our family feel closer.
In the warm afternoon, we peacefully (平静地) read books on hammocks hung among trees by the river. The days always ended with a campfire. We sat around the fire, talking and laughing.
The river is a perfect place for people to forget about all the stresses of life and simply enjoy the moment. To me, it is the perfect place to spend time together with my family. I can’t help thinking about those days again and again even though so many months has passed.
