![]() It’s not WASTE until it is WASTED! With the World Environment Day coming, our school is now requiring every student to form a habit of sorting the waste. Here in our schoolyard we lay four different colors of rubbish bins for different kinds of rubbish. The red is for harmful waste; the blue is for waste that can be recycled ; the green is for kitchen waste; the yellow is for other waste. The followings are some instructions for you. Glass: Empty bottles without caps can be recycled to make new glass bottles. Warning: Mirrors and light bulbs (电灯泡) must not be included in the glass waste. Paper: Newspapers, magazines, boxes must be clean enough to be recycled. Warning: Paper tissues (餐纸) and wall paper are not recyclable as paper and should be kept separately. PMD waste: Packaging made of Plastic or Metal and Drink boxes are used to make new packaging. Warning: Plastic pots (e.g. yogurt pots), plastic bags must not be included with the PMD waste. Harmful waste: out-of-date drugs, used batteries (电池), paint and oil… Besides, if you don’t need your old bikes at all, our school volunteers will collect them. We’re going to fix them up and then give them away to kids who don’t have enough money for a bike. To find out more about recycling, you can visit our school website. |

The eye-recognition(眼睛识别 program has already been tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology(技术) will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.
However, scientists are also working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger.
Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don’t change as you get older, and don’t get dirty like hands or fingers, and even twins have different eyes. So the eye-recognition program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. However, some other programs may only be 51% correct at present. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking you in the eye. So smile!

The idea came to Sosa in Nopalimex when he was looking for ways to save money for his food factory. He now powers his factory with cactus gas (气体). The cost to produce the gas is half the cost of electricity.
Soon, the gas produced by Nopalimex will also be used in cars. Nopalimex’s gas is made by using the prickly pear (刺梨), a kind of cactus. To make the gas, the prickly pear is mixed together with manure (肥料). Then the mixture produces the gas that can be used as fuel.
Why cactus? Fuel can be made from other plants such as corn, but there are a few reasons why the cactus is a better choice. First, prickly pears need very little water and very little care, and grow well in hot temperatures. Today, these characteristics (特点) are key. Also, unlike corn, prickly pears don’t need space that could be used for other food plants. They can grow in areas where many food plants can’t grow. Last, after making gas from prickly pears and manure, their byproducts (副产品) can be used to help grow food.
Scientists still need to do more research on making and using prickly pear gas. As projects like Nopalimex show, we have the possibility to produce more sustainable fuel to power our lives.

Sounds complex? You will have to get used to it. From July 1st, 2019 on, people in Shanghai were required to sort their garbage according to strict rules. Many other cities in China are planning to make similar garbage-sorting rules.
Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year, according to China Economic Net. Most of this waste is buried (填埋) in landfills (垃圾填埋场), we are running out of space for new landfills.
In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials, while wet garbage can be used to make gas. So in order to recycle better, we need to sort our garbage.
Can’t garbage-processing companies do the sorting job for us? They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs much money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?

We also receive waste from some developed countries. We get useful materials from it. What about the useless part? Still burned or buried. But is it a proper way?
Waste pollutes the environment, harms people’s health and causes animals to die. It also gets in the way of green and sustainable development. We can’t make money at the cost of the environment. We should leave clean water and green mountains to our next generations (一代,一辈).
China is getting really serious about waste now.
We are taking less waste from developed countries. From January 2018, China started to stop 24 kinds of waste coming into our country. And more laws and rules about dealing with waste have been made. Anyone who breaks the law will be punished.
China also tries to put waste into good use. One example is the waste electricity factories. They burn waste to make electricity in a green way. No harmful gases or water will get into the environment.
The Chinese government is encouraging people to do waste sorting (分类). Cities like Shanghai, Chongqing and Beijing have their own sorting systems. More will join them soon. More and more people are forming the habit of separating their waste.

What to put in your own kitchen bin (垃圾箱)
Please put all your uneaten fruit and vegetables as well as tea bags in the bin. Don’t put meat and cooked food in. There are words on the bin to tell you what to put in there.
Don’t put plastic (塑料的) bags in the bin. If you wish, you may like to put newspaper in it. This can be added to the compost along with your food waste (废料).
What to do with your bin
When it is full, take the bin along to the neighborhood garden and get all the things into the big compost bin there. You will then need to add some “brown” things (waste paper or dry leaves) on top. You can get these brown things at the neighborhood garden.
Problem-solving
Sometimes people see flies (苍蝇) hanging around the bin. If they worry, you could either take it to the neighborhood garden more often or buy a fly trap.
If you find that the food in the bin smells bad, it tells you are keeping it for too long.
If you have any problems with the compost bin at the neighborhood garden, call us at 34038888.
Thanks for helping our neighborhood!
