文章大意:本文讲了一种新的设备OrCam,详细地介绍了它的构成和功能等。

【推荐2】

OrCam is a device(设备)that reads text loud to people who are visually impaired(视觉受损的)or blind. What the people have to do is to connect the device to their glasses, point it at a text and the device will speak the words into their ear.

Wearers can also program the OrCam device to make out goods, personal items and people’s faces. For example, if you want your device to remember a person’s face, you only need to stand in front of that person, push a button and say that person’s name.

From then on, the device has known them, memorized who they are, and every time you turn your head and look at that person, it will tell you his or her name.

The device has a base unit and a head unit. The base unit is about the size of a pair of glasses’ case and can fit in a pocket. The head unit weighs less than 0.03 kilo and has a mini camera and a speaker to offer clear speech to the user.

The OrCam device can take a picture of the text, send it to the processor(处理器)which will then turn it into words and then the words will be spoken out aloud within a few seconds.

This kind of technology is life-changing to those who have conditions that cannot be corrected by glasses or operations or those who have to depend on cumbersome(笨重的)devices to read books, newspapers, menus and signs.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了左撇子虽然只占总人口的一少部分,但是他们当中出现了很多名人,那么左撇子是不是比右撇子更聪明呢?本文对这个问题进行了相关介绍。

【推荐3】About 90% of the population (人口) in the world is right-handed. But according to a new report, lots of famous people are left-handed. For example, three out of the last six American presidents (总统) are left-handed: George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. So are Leonardo da Vinci, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and so on. Are left-handed people smarter than the right-handed?

To answer this question, scientists studied 2,300 right-handed and left-handed students between the ages of 6 and 17 in Italy. The students were asked to work out some math problems. There was no difference when they looked at the easier math problems. But left-handed students did better at the more difficult problems.

In fact, people don’t always see left-handedness in a positive way. In the pamphlet (小册子) The Prevention and Correction of Left-Handedness in Children written by J.W. Conway in 1936, left handedness was described as a serious “illness”.

Prejudices (偏见) against left-handed people are built into our language. To be someone’s “right-hand man” is good. It means you are a person who can help a lot. But having “two left feet” or receiving a “left-handed compliment (赞扬)” is bad. The word “left” comes from the old English “lyft”, meaning weak or broken. These prejudices not only appear in English. The French word for left is “gauche”, which means “awkward (笨拙的)”, while “droite”, the French word for right, means “clever”.

1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the Paragraph 1?
A.A small part of people are left-handed.B.Most of US presidents are left-handed.
C.A large part of rich men are left-handed.D.Most of famous people are left-handed.
2. What do we know from the study?
A.Right-handed students liked math more.
B.Right-handed students worked out more math problems.
C.Left-handed students did better at easy math problems.
D.Left-handed students did better at difficult math problems.
3. The underlined word “positive” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________” in Chinese.
A.现实的B.确定的C.清晰的D.正面的
4. Which of the following is a left-handed compliment?
A.You helped me a lot.B.You are a talented dancer.
C.You can do it. Just try your best.D.You’ve got a brain. Try using it.
5. What is probably the best title for this passage?
A.Right or left? It is up to you.B.Are left-handed people smarter?
C.Which hand do you often use?D.How to be a left-handed person?
