Dogs are very sociable(合群的) animals. When owners go out and leave their dogs alone, the dogs get worried and upset. Dogs should be trained to be their own while still young instead of when they are older and set in their ways. When owners are not around, they should provide some toys for their dogs to play with. Leaving the radio or television turned on might also provide relaxing background noise.
Howling(嚎叫) is a form of communication. Dogs do it to tell one another where they are. Some dogs howl when they are lonely, while others do it when greeting strangers whom they are seeing for the first time. Some even howl to music and do this because it is fun.
When it comes to training dogs, giving rewards(奖赏) is a far better way than using punishment. Food makes an excellent reward, and if they do not respond(反应) to this, owners should try touching. Dogs like being touched by owners very much. Words of praise work well too, but not as well as food or touch. It helps if owners spend more time with their dogs.

Wild beavers(河狸) are back! Experts say that the wild beaver families are doing well. The beavers are even boosting wildlife and the environment!
Over ten years ago, a family of beavers turned up in a part of the river Otter, in Devon. No one knew exactly where they came from. It was a big surprise -wild beavers hadn't lived in England for around 400 years!
In 2015, the government allowed the beavers to stay there as part of a trial(试验). They wanted to see if these animals could be reintroduced to the wild. The trial ends in February. Some scientists from the University of Exeter already say the beavers help the wild life in the area. One scientist called it “an amazing story”.
A lot of this is because of dams. Beavers build dams along the river. This creates deep pools in the riverbed and slows the water down. Scientists say this is perfect for many different types of plants and animals! Many plants are growing near the beavers. Different types of animals are also becoming more and more in the river. Beavers also help make flooding less, scientists say. The beavers' dams slow down the speed of the river, especially after heavy rain.
There are, however, some problems. Beavers gnaw(咬, 啃) on trees and this can harm them. Their dams can also sometimes create floods(洪水) on people's land.
Beavers aren't the only animals that are being reintroduced to the wild! In 2019, red squirrels were brought back to an area of the Scottish Highlands. Further away, the world's rarest(罕见的)duck, the Madagascar pochard, is making a comeback. It was set free into the wild on the African island in 2019 and is doing well.
Who knows what other animals might be making a comeback?

It might look like fun, but there are reports that animals are hurt now and again. The World Animal Protection (WAP) says that up to 550, 000 wild animals are exposed (暴露) to ill treatment around the world; in Cambodia, for example, it’s been reported that elephants have died after carrying tourists for long in hot weather. This is getting attention—over 100 travel companies have promised that they will no longer open up such places. However, some people argue that animal tourism isn’t always as bad as it seems. So what do you think?

People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily, because they are traveling with the help of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation, it won’t try to go it alone but will quickly get back into formation.
If we have the sense of a goose, we can stay in formation with people who are heading in the same direction as we are. When the head goose gets tired, it goes back in the wing and another goose flies to the point. It issensibleto take turns to lead, whether with people or with geese flying south.
Finally, when a goose gets sick or is wounded (受伤) by a gunshot, two other geese fall down with that goose. They follow it down for protection and to lend help. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies.
If we have the sense of a goose, we can stand by each other like that.

You might have seen beautiful rainbows in the sky before. They form when sunlight falls on water drops in the air. But in fact, moonlight can also create rainbows in the same way. They are called “moonbows”. They are similar to rainbows, but they are created by moonlight instead of direct sunlight.
Moonbows are more unusual than rainbows. Different weather and astronomical conditions have to be just right for moonbows to be created. The moon has to be very low in the sky—only 42 degrees from the horizon(地平线). The moon period has to be a full moon or nearly full. The sky must be very dark for a moonbow to be watched clearly—any bright light can obscure it. Water drops must appear in the air in the opposite direction of the moon. Moonbows appear on the opposite side of the moon and usually look white to the human eye. This is because their colors are not bright enough to be noticed by the human eye.
Moonbows more often appear in some locations around the world. Most of these locations usually have waterfalls, which create thin fog in the air. Some of these locations are the Yosemite National Park in California and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park in Kentucky and Waimea in Hawaii, US.
Moonbows do really happen. So at a certain time and a certain place, when a moonbow happens to appear, you can’t miss it if you’re right there.

How close do you stand when you talk to a friend? You can stand close to people in the Middle East but don’t stand too close to North Americans! Give them more personal space.
Do you know how to touch people correctly? Chinese girls often walk arm in arm with their friends. South Americans sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you, so you can’t move away! But in Britain many people don’t like other people touching them at all.
Do you look at people when you talk? In some places, it isn’t polite to look at people when they talk, but in other countries it isn’t polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the US, people usually look at each other when they talk.
And how do you say goodbye? That’s easy. Wave (挥手) to say goodbye. But be careful! In Greece, it’s not polite at all! In fact, it’s very rude!

Quite different from the English we are familiar with, the signs read, for example, “Here cannot go in” instead of “You cannot go in from here”, and “Here can charge (给……充电) phone” instead of “You can charge your phone here”.
English is one of the official languages in Singapore. But the English Singaporeans use in their daily lives is far from standard English and earns it the name “Singlish”. In Singapore, migrants (移民) from many countries, including China, India and Malaysia, all speak their own versions (版本) of “English”. The New York Times calls Singlish a “patchwork”.
For example, in Singlish you can easily find influences from Chinese. Singaporeans use Chinese sentence structures like “Toilet where?” instead of “Where is the toilet?”. They also add words like “leh” and “meh” at the end of a sentence to show their mood (情绪). This comes from Cantonese.
Though it may seem interesting, Singlish is worrying Sinagapore’s government. It thinks that Singlish may hurt people’s ability to speak standard English and make it hard for them to communicate with foreigners. The government even started the Speak Good English Movement in 2000.
But the movement didn’t seem to work very well, especially among young people. The youth think Singlish is cool and a way to show they are Singaporeans. Besides, many can speak both standard English and Singlish. “We are a nation good at code-switching (语码转换),” wrote Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan, a Singaporean author, in Time magazine.
