Debbie once told me about a boy in her class who liked being away from school. He would rub (擦) the end of the thermometer (温度计) until it went up to 39 ℃. Then he’d put it in his mouth and his mother would think he was really ill.
This morning I tried doing that but it never went above 35 ℃ and I rubbed it for ten minutes. So I held the thermometer next to the light on my desk and it went up to 40 ℃. I thought I’d put it in my mouth and walk downstairs like that. Then my mother would take it out and she would be worried when she saw that I was rather ill.
The only trouble was I didn’t know the thermometer would be so hot. As soon as I put it into my mouth, it burnt my tongue! I spit(吐掉) the thermometer out. It fell on the floor but it didn’t break.
I will have to think of a better way to get my mother and father back together.

Most people are afraid of snakes. They may think snakes are dangerous and ugly. There are more than 2,000 kinds of snakes. Most of them live in mountains or forests, and in cities sometimes we can find them in grass or other dark places. Snakes can’t walk or run because they have no legs or feet, but these long and thin animals can move very fast on their stomachs. Snakes usually have green, yellow or black skins, which make it difficult for their enemies (敌人) to find them. In winter they hibernate in holes. They look for a hole to stay inside, in the ground, or in a rock or a tree. They do not wake up again until spring comes. Snakes feed on mice, frogs, bird eggs and so on.
Snakes play an important part in nature. We can make useful medicine with them. Without their help, the rodents (啮齿动物) will be out of control. But many of them are in danger of disappearing. Houses and buildings take up the land where snakes live. Many snakes lose their lives in traffic, and people often kill snakes for their skins or meat.

The number of insects has dropped by half in the past few years, according to a British biologist Dave Coulson. You may think small insects are not important. But in fact they are the main part of the species(物种) on Earth.
Insects are actually on the way to extinction, according to the first review of insect population. The researchers say the main reason for this is the use of pesticides(杀虫剂)because they destroy insects’ living areas. Also, weather change is another important cause.
“Unless we change our ways of producing food, insects will go down the way to extinction in a few years,” the researchers wrote in the review. “This will have huge influences on the planet’s ecosystem(生态系统).”
We need insects to pollinate(授粉) crops. They also break down(分解) dead plants and animals, which can keep the soil healthy. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat and die of hunger. Then, the ecosystem(生态系统) would lose balance(平衡).
“If the number of insect species keep dropping, this will have bad influences on both Earth’s ecosystem and the survival(生存) of us humans,” said one of the writers of the review.
“The first step to stop this is to let more people understand the values of the natural world,” he suggests. “The best place to start is from our children, who should realize environmental protection from an early age.”

To people’s surprise, the enzyme is present only in the Japanese. The Japanese traditionally like to eat food rich in seaweed(海藻). And the seaweed is rich in this kind of enzyme.
However, the enzyme isn’t present in all the Japanese. During the study, just 5 out of 14 Japanese had the enzyme. All the Americans studied didn’t have the enzyme.
“The number is small,” said researcher Mirjam Czjzek. “But we can say that this enzyme is present only in the Japanese and not in the North Americans.”
Then some people think that maybe other people are able to get the enzyme if they eat a lot of seaweed. The study suggests that they collect uncooked seaweed to make their sushi.
Restaurant sushi is often cooked, which will destroy the enzyme. So, if you want to get that enzyme, you can travel to Japan to have a taste of the real sushi.
