Chores were not popular at my house. My children didn’t like to do chores. They always saw me do chores, but they hardly ever helped me do them.
A year ago, I made a game called “The Endless Chore Game”. It is really great. Here’s how the game works.
I make a card with forty squares (方框), and I write a different chore on each square. These chores can be easy and interesting like making dessert. Then my family rolls the dice (骰子) to decide what chores we have to do. The card also has a few squares with fun things, like watching TV and singing. If you are lucky, you can watch TV when the others are doing the chores.
My son likes the game very much. He goes to the kitchen happily every morning to do the game. It is really a good way to make my children do chores. You can have a try if you have the same problem as me.

A former (从前的) policeman said his mother took him to the opera in St. Louis on Saturday. He listened to dialects (方言) he didn’t understand. He grew to love opera. Now every Saturday he listens to a radio station that plays opera in the afternoons, enjoying Italian voices and fondly remembering his mom.
A woman shared that she was only 17 months old when her mother died. Her father remarried. She values the things learned from her stepmother-how to keep house, cook and care for children. “But it wasn’t a mother’s love,” she said. “If you have a mother and you’ve a mother’s love, don’t take it for granted (把它视为当然).”
An entrepreneur (企业家) was 9 years old when his mom let him skip school on his birthday. The car attendant said, “Why aren’t you in school?”
“My mom let me skip and is taking me out to lunch for my birthday,” he said. The attendant said, “Your mom loves you like nobody else. Don’t you ever forget that, OK? And take care of your mom!”
Another person shared that when he immigrated to the US as a young man, his parents did not approve. He came anyway and landed in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Cao, 32, was born in Beijing, but left home at 20 and has studied and lived in the US, the UK, and France for 12 years. Having seen so many cultures, Cao wanted to use her drawing skills to show the differences she has experienced. So she created the cartoon series Tiny Eyes Comics.
“My experience shows that although travel is much easier and faster today, the distance(距离)between cultures hasn’t shortened,” Cao said. She hopes to build bridges and break down misunderstandings between different cultures. One of her cartoons shows water forms in different countries. Three glasses of water are shown. The glass of water from the US has ice; the one from France is full of sparkling water(气泡水); the one from China is steaming(冒热气的).
Cao also uses her cartoons to show different ways of thinking and social customs. During the COVID-19 pandemic(疫情), she used her comics to explain why Chinese people prefer to wear masks while western people don’t. “Her simple pictures have played a big part in reflecting Chinese culture,” Italian magazine Grazia reported.
Many foreign readers say that Cao’s comics help them understand China, while Chinese living abroad have felt that they are seen and understood.

Talk it out. Communication is the key to any friendship. Open your mouth and let your dad know what’s on your mind. Give him a chance to get to know you.
Listen up. Your dad’s lived more life than you have. Believe it or not, he’s probably been there and can help you get through the pressures and struggles. Ask how he dealt with school, girls or temptations (诱惑). Then pay attention.
Take some time. It can be hard for us kids to talk about what really matters. But spending time together can build the relationship, and create chances to talk. Go for a hike or a game. Work on the car. Whatever you’re into, ask your dad to do it together.
Fight fair. Family disagreements are unavoidable. When temperatures rise, keep your mouth respectful and cool off before you say something bad. Talk it out when you can do so calmly.
Realize respect. Face it: your dad’s been given authority (权威) to help guide you as you know. He’s going to make mistakes, but so are you. Forgive him when he blows it, and honor his decisions—even if you don’t agree.

Her daughter was an excellent student, and took part in all kinds of after-class activities. Even so, she decided to put a tracking app on the kid’s phone so that she could know where the kid was at any time.
At first, this made my sister-in-law “feel better”. Then the good situation suddenly ended. She recalled, “I found out that she was someplace that she said she wasn’t. I went out in the middle of the night and found her walking without shoes in the middle of the street with some friends,” Things went quickly downhill for the mother and the daughter after that.
With 83% of teens having their own phones now, according to a study in 2020, more and more of their parents are facing the question to watch or not.
Ann Homayoun, an expert from Harvard University, has advised many parents and their kids about this. “I’ve found teens are more acceptable to tracking apps when it is included as part of a family agreement to improve safety than when it is placed as a secret tool to watch them,” she said.
Mark Bell, a father of a teenage girl, said, “We don t have tracking apps, but we have set some ground rules that my daughter must follow in exchange for us providing a phone,” he said. For example, his daughter must “friend” him on social media (媒体) so that he can read posts, and must share all passwords. When you’re trying to build trust, you need to create an environment that encourages it. So, to win their trust, you always need to be straight with your children.
“Parents must let children know how and when they’ll be watching them,” said Doctor White. “If they’re not open about it”, he warns, “it can greatly harm the parent and child relationship.”
