Many people like eating meat so much that they can’t enjoy a single meal without it. After seeing a new study, they may want to change their eating habits.
Scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health have found that having too much red meat can cause a higher risk of early death. These “dangerous” meats are the ones that look red before they’re cooked, such as pork, beef and rabbit. Scientists published the study results in a medical magazine.
The scientists studied the eating habits and health of more than 110,000 adults for more than 20 years. They did a survey on their diets every four years. During the 20 years of research, almost 24,000 people died, including 5,910 from heart disease and 9,464 from cancer.
Scientists examined different lifestyle factors (因素) , including age, weight, physical activity and family history of heart disease. They also studied the amount of different foods they ate, such as corns, fruits, vegetables and fish.
The results showed that eating one meal a day of cooked red meat was connected with a 20 percent higher risk of early death.
“The message we want to communicate is it would be great if you could lower your intake of red meat to half a serving (一份) a day or two to three servings a week,” the study’s lead author, An Pan told the USA Today.

A group of emperor penguins crowd together to keep warm, using stop-and-go movements to protect themselves from the winds. Can you see the connection?
Emperor penguins move like cars in traffic jams to keep warm, according to a new research. A penguin only needs to move 2cm in any direction for its neighbor to do the same thing. These movements then flow(涌动) through the whole group of penguins like a "traveling wave".
These waves also help the smaller crowds join bigger groups, keeping more and more of their friends warm. A single Antarctic "traffic jam" has thousands of penguins. Interestingly, the technology once used for studying road traffic jams was used to study the penguins. It included studying time-lapse(延时) videos. Scientists also discovered that unlike on the road, these waves can be made by any penguin and in any direction.
With temperatures usually dropping 50 degrees below zero and winds reaching speeds of up to 200km/h, these traveling waves are very important for penguins to keep warm.
These penguins can also teach us a lesson. In a big group, they learn to be orderly and patient, and never to crash into each other. These are skills that we should all learn from them when we are on the road!

Nearly 50% of all workers in the United States have jobs they aren’t happy with. Don’t let this happen to you! If you want to find the right job, don’t rush to look through the ads in the newspaper. Instead, sit down and think about yourself. What kind of person are you? What makes you happy? According to John Holland who studies personalities, there are six types. Nobody is just one personality type, but most people are mainly one type. For each type, there are certain jobs that might be right and others that are probably wrong. Considering your personality type can help you make the right job decision. Liz was one of the people who were not sure about their jobs. She knew she wanted to do something for children, so she thought she could help children as a school counselor (顾问) or a lawyer. She took counseling and law courses — but hated them. After talking to a career counselor, she found that these jobs didn’t suit her. She is more interested in films, so she studied films and she now produces children’s TV shows — and loves it. | Six Types of Personalities ★The Realistic type is practical and likes working with machines and tools. ★The Investigative (研究的) type is interested in all the new things and likes to learn, study situations, and solve problems. ★The Artistic type is imaginative and likes to express himself or herself by creating. ★The Social type is friendly and likes helping or training other people. ★The Enterprising (有进取心) type is outgoing and likes to lead other people. ★The Conventional (传统的) type is careful and likes to follow routines and details. |

The year 2019 marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Over the past 70 years, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), China has experienced historic changes and made great achievements.
The nation has experienced great economic (经济的) growth in the past seven decades (十年).
In 1978, China’s GDP was the 11th highest in the world. In 2010, China overtook Japan to become the second-largest economy in the world after the US. The country is still in that position now.
With China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, the country has become a major power for world economic growth. Since 2002, it has helped the world economy grow by nearly 30 percent on average (平均). The entry into the WTO also allowed less expensive foreign foods, such as American grapes and Japanese veal (小牛肉), to be sold in Chinese supermarkets. At the same time, many foreign electronics factories have moved to China, making these products cheaper. Today China is the world’s largest exporter (出口国) and the second-largest importer (进口国), according to China Daily.
In fighting poverty (贫穷) in recent decades, China has made historic achievements and become a major contributor (贡献者) to the improvement of people’s lives around the world. To reduce (减少) poverty, the Chinese government has done a lot of work. It built roads, created jobs, and gave people better education and medical services. The country has promised to eradicate (根除) extreme (极端) poverty by 2020, and to date, more than 800 million Chinese have been lifted out of poverty, China Daily noted.
As for education, many Chinese are going abroad to study and do research. Over 600,000 Chinese went abroad to study in 2018, according to China Daily. China has also set up 536 Confucius Institutes (孔子学院) in more than 150 countries. Many foreign students are learning Chinese language and culture there.

Sun Ruifeng, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She looked for an English tutoring course (辅导课程), but in the end, she had to change it to a swimming training class on August 6, 2021. Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to lighten the study pressure on young students.
On July 24, 2021, Chinese authorities (中国政府) introduced a guideline (指导方针) to ease (减轻) the burden of excessive homework and off-campus tutoring for primary and junior high school students. For example, homework for children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish.
According to the guideline, tutoring institutions (辅导机构) cannot teach students on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
According to Global Times, every year more than 75 percent of Chinese children, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, are studying in tutoring programs. However, some training institutions take part in anxiety marketing, selling unnecessary programs that increase the burden on students. “This has led to many social problems such as students’ falling levels of physical fitness, more mental health problems and huge family costs,” said Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher with the National Institute of Education Sciences.
Many parents showed their support for the new moves. “Subject learning is enough at school and we hope to improve the children’s quality of life during holidays,” a parent in Guangzhou told Xinhua.
However, some parents are very concerned. A parent in Shanxi said that although she agreed with the new moves, she worried about what her son would do after school if both parents have no time to be with him.
According to the guideline, primary and middle schools are asked to offer after-school services, including homework tutoring, sports, arts, reading and interest groups.
