If you have one sock but not the other, what can you do? Have some fun and make a puppet! A puppet is a toy you put on your hand. Learn how to make one with a sock.

Can eating carrots make your eyesight better?
Carrots are rich in vitamin A. It helps the eyes to turn light into information for your brain. This lets people see in darker places. However, eating more carrots won’t help you see better. A certain minimum amount (数量)will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you better vision.
If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?
Myopia (近视) can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopia, there’s a 33 to 60 percent (百分比) chance that their child will have bad eyesight. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it’s down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopic parents. So if your eyesight is bad, your children might still have good vision.
Do color blind people see the world in black and white?
Color blindness (色盲) doesn’t usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. They usually can’t tell some colors apart, especially green and red. Another commonly confused pair of colors is yellow and blue. Our eyes have cone cells (视锥细胞) that sense different wavelengths of light. If these cells don’t work properly(适当地), color blindness happens. There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only color blind in low light. However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is shades of gray.

She said to them, “Now I have a brother in Los Angeles. If I was calling him on the phone and at the same time you were 75 feet away, listening to me from across the street, which of you would hear what I said earlier, my brother or you and for what reason?”
Tom at once answered, “Your brother. Because electricity travels faster than sound waves.” “That’s very good,” Miss King answered; but then one of the girls raised her hand, and Miss King said, “Yes, Kate?”

“If you feel like sleeping more in winter, you’re not alone,” said Dr. Raj Dasgupta. To support himself, he mentioned a study that found at least a third of American adults sleep more in winter.
So do people need to hibernate (冬眠) like some animals on cold days? Another study done at a hospital in Berlin may help you find out the answer. 188 patients in the study slept about an hour longer in winter, with 30 more minutes of rapid eye movement (REM). REM is a stage of sleep where we dream more and our breathing speeds up. “REM helps us remember things and stay happy, and keeps us healthy,” said Dasgupta.
The need for more sleep in winter may have to do with how light changes. “Our bodies use sunlight to set our sleep clocks. When it’s bright outside, we are usually active. But when the sun goes down, we may feel tired,” Dasgupta said. “Less sunlight on cold days causes an increase in melatonin (褪黑素) produced by our bodies, which makes us feel sleepy. “Because of more production of melatonin, people naturally think a healthy person needs more sleep in winter.
However, that doesn’t mean humans really need hibernation. “We just need to have a better rest from busy social work in winter, such as getting more sunlight in the morning and going to bed and waking up at the same time every day,” said another researcher, Dr. Carleara Weiss.
1. According to the study in Para. 2, the patients slept about ________ longer on cold days.A.30 minutes | B.60 minutes | C.188 minutes |

②The nervous system has two parts. One part is the nerves. They look like long, thin lines. Their job is to carry messages to all parts of the body. The spinal cord (脊髓) and the brain make up the other part of the nervous system. Messages from the brain travel down the spinal cord. They go to the rest of the body through the nerves. Muscles receive these messages.
③Imagine waiting for a bus on a street corner. It’s a cold day, the bus is late, and you feel cold. Here’s what happens.
④A control center in your brain senses that you are cold. It transmits a message down the spinal cord to all the nerves. The message races through nerves that connect to other nerves. Then it goes from the nerves to the muscles. The message says, “Warning! Prepare for action!”
⑤When a muscle moves, it makes heat. That is why you get warm when you run or play soccer. When your muscles get the message that you are cold, they get busy. First they tighten (收缩), then they loosen (松). They tighten then loosen over and over again. This makes you shake. You also get warmer.

What’s more, I was going to a new school. I feared that my classmates would be cold toward me. But it was not that bad. My Chinese teacher, Ms. Li, did her best to help me catch up with the rest of the class. She lent me her 7th-grade teaching notes and helped me a lot. She always had faith (信心) in me that I would make it. She never gave up on me, and for this, I will be forever thankful for what she did for me. |
