Too much screen use is bad for people’s health and almost half of parents are worried about their kids’ screen time. A big smartphone maker has introduced new technology to stop children from spending too much time on their phones.
Apple’s new smartphone tool came after a lot of people said that the Apple company was not doing enough to stop kids and grown-ups from becoming addicted(沉溺)to their iPhones.
The new app, called Screen Time, records how long people spend looking at their phones and sends people weekly reports about their time with screens.
Parents will be able to control their children’s use of smartphones. They can set daily time limits(限度)on each app. When the time runs out, the phone shows a message that "It’s time to move on.
"Parents can get a report of the time their children are spending on apps, how often each hour they are picking up their phones and what is interesting them, " Apple’s Craig Federighi said. "With the help of this app, parents can make decisions about how much time they want their children to spend on phones each day. "
"The company’s new Screen Time tool was badly needed. Apple and all the other big tech companies surely have a social responsibility(责任)to help parents decide on the right smartphone use, " Dr. Joanne Orlando, a researcher in Western Sydney University, said.
She said the Screen Time reports could also help parents who spend too much time on smartphones. In this way, they can see whether they’re looking up from their screens often enough.

AIS recent developments have got a lot of social attention. Some people have welcomed AI because it makes things possible. Can you imagine that you can play basketball with robots one day when you feel lonely on the playground? For another example, AT will have a big influence on areas like medicine and engineering. Robots can do most jobs faster and better than humans. They seldom make mistakes. But this attention has also caused a lot of fear. According to a recent study, nearly five percent of jobs will disappear because of Al. In some areas, Al is already doing the work that people used to do, such as assembling(AC)cars, digging the coal and lifting goods. Self-driving cars and trucks controlled by AI will also take away the driver's jobs in the future.
On the other hand, AI will also create many new jobs for people. More people will be needed
to write programmers for Al systems and they will set up and work on them, too. At the same time, jobs that require feelings, excellent communication skills with people will not be replaced by Al. These includes jobs in fields like teaching, nursing and personal training.

With partial lockdown of Cuba's capital Havana during the COVID-19 pandemic, Chavez practices her routines more often than ever. But instead of attending the Cuban School of Wushu and Qigong in the city's Chinatown, where she has gone for more than seven years, she practices at home.
"Chinese martial arts make me feel not only healthy but relaxed. I forget about the coronavirus and day-to-day problems for a while," Chavez said. "I am a senior citizen, but feel energetic. And I also encourage my relatives and close friends to join this exciting world." Chavez, who lives with her husband and daughter in a small apartment, has adapted (适应) her routines to the smaller quarters, since the government asked people to stay home and avoid public gatherings in order to stop the outbreak in a short time period.
According to Roberto Vargas Lee, the president of the school, with gyms and sports centers closed during the lockdown, more Cubans began to practice the Chinese martial arts. He thinks "Chinese martial arts are never forgotten. They allow people to remain in harmony with nature and take care of their bodies while strengthening their minds. "The world needs the spirit of Chinese martial arts to find balance," he added.
According to history, Chinese martial arts were introduced to Cuba following the arrival of the first Chinese emigrants (移民) in 1847, and were accepted and practiced by most of the Cubans in the early 20th century. Now, because of the outbreak of the virus, people can't take Wushu lessons and practice face to face, but they can take lessons by watching Chinese martial arts programs which will be aired on Cuban TV. Isis Betancourt, 45, a doctor and news anchor (主持人) on Cuban TV that specializes in health issues, said audiences would welcome the program. "Chinese martial arts are more than sports. After school, it’s very difficult for Vishal Singh to make a choice. He knows he should really go on with his homework, but the Internet is so attractive that he can’t really pay much attention to his study.
“Students have always faced distractions (分心) and time-wastes,” writes Matt Richtel in the New York Times. He says that computers are a real challenge (挑战) for students. They need to pay more attention to their learning.
Students say that their parents are worried about the distractions and try to control their computer time. But it is still difficult to manage the time of using computers.
Teachers at Woodside commonly think technology makes students difficult to concentrate (集中精力) in class, but they are divided over whether computer and the Internet are the solutions.
In Richtel’s article, English teacher Marcia Blondel feels disappointed with her students. She isn’t able to get them to read 30 pages of a book for homework. In order to solve this problem, she asks them to take part in a read-aloud of the book in class.
But as some teachers express their worries over students’ digital diets, seeing it as a way, they are trying to use new technology in the classroom to draw the attention of these 21st-century students. The headmaster of Woodside High School, David Reilly, asks teachers to build websites to communicate with students. The students are allowed to use computers, smart phones or other new technology to interact (互动) with their teachers. It’s convenient for them to search for some useful materials that they need before class. With the help of the new technology, the students have more chances to share their ideas with each other and spend less time on video games. So, they pay more attention to their study and they don’t show up with bleary-eyes (睡眼朦胧的) any more. Mr. Reilly also spends a large amount of money building up a multimedia center and introduce new courses like the digital audio recording (数码录像) class.
“We try our best to take back their attention and make them concentrate on their study,” he says. “To a degree, we’re using technology to do it.”
Some schools are looking to use the Internet to encourage students to study.

Recently, the result of the national reading survey has been announced (宣布) and it paints a brighter future for reading habits in the Internet times. Last year, 21,270 men from 55 cities answered the survey. It showed that the Chinese people’s reading rate went up slightly over the year before. Reading rate means the percentage of citizens regularly reading books, newspapers and digital reading materials.
The survey shows that the daily reading time and yearly reading number of paper books, printed newspapers and magazines have dropped, while digital reading has continuously increased. Every day Chinese people use different digital devices like mobile phones, personal computers or iPads for 100.41 minutes on average (平均), 15.5 percent higher than the year before.
According to the survey, Chinese people’s reading habits have changed because mobile phones provide more chances to get different kinds of reading materials on digital platforms. More than 50 percent of the Chinese people who were interviewed prefer digital reading, mostly on mobile phones.
Another interesting result is that an increasing number of people like to listen to audiobooks (有声读物). More than 30 percent of the people who answered the survey listen to audiobooks, higher than the year before. It may have something to do with the way people go to and from work — many people in the countryside drive or take public transport for long hours, which leads to the greater need for audiobooks. People’s reading habits are changing with social changes. In my opinion, the relevant authorities (相关机构) should notice it and shouldn’t fall behind.
